  • Pt. Uday Bhawalkar was the opening artiste at the annual FEA-curated THE DIWALI CONCERT SERIES 2017, now in its sixth year.
    He began his recital with a wonderful rendition of Raag Multani. He was accompanied by Pratap Awad on the pakhawaj and his two senior disciples Chintan Upadhyay and Prassanna Vishwanathan on supporting vocals and tanpuras.

    Excellent performance. Udayj's voice calms us down. Good pakhawaj accompaniment by Pratap. The chorus with Prasanna and Chintan makes the performance complete.

    outstandig! Everything! Bhawalar, but also a great respect to Pratap Awad! Nowhere else could I hear that particular hypnothic drumming. So in the background, but yet so important. It is like they would be one organism together. Great deep understanding of music as a bond between all beings.

    I must say that this trend of bringing the pakhawaj in on the jhala is a bit too rock and roll for me, and spoils the impact of its entry for the bandish.

    • @anirudhraghavan
      @anirudhraghavan 3 года назад +5

      It might seem like a trend but the use of Pakhawaj in the ati-Jod and Jhala sections of the nom-tom is a very old tradition. Pt Bhawalkar has spoken about it in his lec-dems. In fact, the singing of nom-tom may dhrupadiyas believe came from the style of playing jod and jhala on the Rudra Veena and the tradition of playing Tar Paran or elaborating raga patterns along the bols of chautaal. This tradition is still practiced by the senia gharana sarodiyas and sitariyas.
      The use of pakhawaj is not alien to the tradition. It is just that many Dagar vocalists chose not to use it for a while.
      But of course, aesthetically you may still find that the use of the Pakhawaj is not to your taste. But I just wanted to point out that this is by no means a trend or a recent fad.

      @@anirudhraghavan you could be right that it isnt a new thing. Ive never heard it on any old dhrupad recordings and it seems alien to pakhawaj culture to introduce it where there isnt a taal nor a composition.

      Even the Senior Dagars & esp Ameenuddin in solo used the punctuation of the Pakhawaj beat in Alaap - as a mark of a metronomic cycle of swars.
      I vaguely remember some Ameenudd8n recordings with Pakhawaj coming in on the Jhala.
      But may be there are others who could confirm or correct this 8mpression.
