I actually think it's better than the movie, even though the deaths are removed and Maximilian isn't as scary. The narrator did an amazing job! The special effects also hold up a lot better as still pictures and it leaves more up to the imagination. As a kid, I really loved the shot of the sentries getting blown to pieces and assumed the movie must have looked amazing. Unfortunately, I was disappointed several years later when I caught it on TV.

Having just watched the movie, this barely even resembles it. They completely cut Harry and Alex, the destruction of the Palomino, Kate's near-lobotomy, and removed any personality from the cast. Oh, and the scene with the meteor chasing the crew across the bridge was mirrored.
I know they had very little run time on the record, but yikes!

I used to love Disney as a child, timeless classics like Snow White, Fantasia, and masterpieces like Old Yeller. And this movie, a merge of timeless elegance and sci fi together. But now Disney is heading for a "black hole" of it's own doing. With one of the worst slaps in the faces of Star Wars fans with The Last Jedi (should have named it Social Justice Wars, Rise of the Snowflake) and it's political agenda seeking properties, it's no wonder Disney cancelled the reboot of The Black Hole. Probably for the best, I couldn't imagine how much powerful characters like Max Schell would be hacked up to insure Political Correctness.
