  • A day of tracking a buck on snow in the big woods of northern Maine. Hunting is a pursuit, tracking is the ultimate pursuit of a whitetail buck, I don't care if that hurts your feelings.

My feelings ain’t hurt at all….tracking a deer is absolutely the ultimate pursuit and has always been my favorite way to hunt deer ever since I read LB’s book back when I was in High School in the early 70’s. The older I get, the harder it becomes but I pray for a tracking snow every Deer Season. Keep after em Cody. The Lord shines on the persistent.

@@TheMaineWoods Yup!! I have been tracking hard up here in Northern Wisconsin...got 20 yards from a buck on saturday...too thick to even see him let alone pull off a shot. But still to say I was 20 yards from a shooter buck in a piece of woods I have never stepped foot in is really cool!! I can't hardly stand hunting any other way....I long to go tracking all year long!! Adventure every time you take a track!!

The reality and physicality of what you do is awesome. I cant hunt currently bc of creaky bones but our problem in NY was always we had to stay on unposted land. What we did was wait for them. You go to them. I could not even imagine dragging a buck like that out of the woods. You have to be in professional athlete shape. Those slide action Remingtons seem to be the ticket in the thicket. After the bancruptcy they sell them again but only in 3 calibers. Ruger is also slowly reviving Marlin. The former Remington owners wrote off tons of borrowed money on those companies and they went down. So many lost jobs due to greed. Evil stuff.

We've all eaten our share of track soup (I like mine with a little salt, just a pinch, and cilantro) but at least you got some shooting. On those narrow gap situations, I like holding ahead (on a gap) on my best guess for path of travel and touching it off as soon as I see motion. That's gotten a couple bucks for me that otherwise would've gotten away.

Tracking is definitely a challenge. I am not great at it but I enjoy tracking and still hunting here in Maine. The best part is us Trackers and Still Hunters will see things that the average stand or blind hunter may never see. That persistence pays off. I've learned with these Deer, stay on them because eventually you'll catch them slipping.

Success comes in all levels and styles. Catching up to bucks while tracking in the big woods is success - Period! Obviously making the kill shot and harvesting is great too. But, many people hunt all season and never see one buck let alone a half dozen like yourself. Keep the pursuit going and I'll see you at the 505 Lodge! "TDH"

"Hunting is a pursuit, tracking is the ultimate pursuit of a whitetail buck, I don't care if that hurts your feelings". Doesn't hurt my feelings. When I was a young boy in the 50's I use to have to hold the flashlight for my dad, so there are no more chips left on my shoulder. I wish we could hunt like this in Texas but just not possible. @@TheMaineWoods that makes more sense , glad you even got to see him, it’s hard when you can’t really hear much and have to rely on just your eyes. The hardest part of tracking is knowing when to go fast and when to go slow. And whenever you stop, always stop behind a tree if you can. The Benoits like to track in pairs, so one could follow the track and the other watches the woods. Side note, I have a pump action 30.06 I bought from Lanny’s brother in 2000. Much love for all the videos. God bless, may you and your family holidays be filled with joy and happiness

Awesome hunt but I have a question why do most of you guys carry 760s or 7600s and not 742s or 7400s?
It doesn't seem like you have a issue with getting a follow-up shot even with a pump. I think a semi-auto would be a little bit faster not sure that it matters all that much.
Does it basically boil down to just personal preference.
As someone has lived and hunted in the Southeast primarily Kentucky Tennessee and Georgia we just can't do this kind of hunting here.
I did live in New Hampshire for about 5 years for a job and I tried this in Northern New Hampshire wasn't very successful probably just don't have the patience for it or was probably going too fast I saw a lot of butts didn't get a lot of shots LOL
