Pandit-ji just made the banyan talk here. This is not about tabla playing. This is all about deep and virtuoso musicianship. He melds himself completely into the soul of the melody and able is to transcend himself beyond tabla playing and taal keeping. This is what great accompanists are be able to do, forget their self and surrender themselves completely to the music.
I remember hearing Smt Parveen Sultana at Julander back in the 1960's it was the music fest that launched my interest in Sarode. My grandfather was born in Delhi but noone in my family caught the Indian Classical flu bug, except me. I did learn Raag Jog Kaush/ Kaushi Jog from Khansahib in 1984 at his college in California. Such blessed times.
You are lucky sir, to be a disciple of Ustadji. I had the opportunity to meet him only once through one of my friends ( his student and close associate) and was moved with his simplicity, humor sense and the quality of bringing an unknown close to him in no time through interactions. I was so scared before seeing him, but in moment after I was introduced, the nervousness went off. The meeting with Ustadji changed my out looks, feelings and thoughts on Indian classical music.
Very nice chandronandon by TNM. Actually that person on the tanpura is a sitar student at Ali akbar college. I got report from Kumar da about that. His name is Josh Feingberg. Look at his youtube, for a westerner who is learning for only 10-12 years he is good, lets be happy westerners are learning our music. It's not a question if he good sitarist of not, but you have to realize people like him help our artists when they are in the US, so when they come here we should make them happy! they are flying from thousands of miles. So they are not on stage because of some musical merit, but just the mutual good will. We are a people of hospitality.
Chandranandan was created by Late Ustad Ali Akbar Khan - the maestro. As per Ustadji, this raaga was created on the spot while he was in HMV studio in Kolkata for a recording. He was asked to play a raaga which is uncommon / never heard of or taught by his father Ustad Allaudin Khan, exclusively to him. This was narrated by Ustad Ali Akbar Khan himself during an interview, later in AIR, FM , Kolkata Channel.
I am a great fan of Abdus Sattar Tari Khan{Pakistan} for his accompaniment with Mehdi Hassan .But unlike Pakistani players, Kumar Bose never do anything in a hurry. His style of letting loose of new and newer ' Kaidas' is formidable. Performs like a ' sthitapragya'.
Just wanted to listen to more of one of my favorite raags and happened upon so much blatant racism in the comments! Its so shocking and disheartening to see so many people criticise Panditji for having his foreign students on stage with him. No one seems to look at it from the students point of view! it is such a huge honour to be allowed to be seated on stage with your guru! perhaps Tejendra ji was just giving them that experience! they are also great musicians themselves and clearly respect the art form and their guru very much. I myself would absolutely love to sit quietly behind my guru during one of his performances, but now I'm having second thoughts.
Still worth to listen...it is very melodious...a spark of Ustad Ali Akhbar Khan, as I felt since the Raga Chandranandan is a creation of Myhar Gharana and if it is played by Khan Sahab' its sweetened melodious form could be felt otherwise..
Yes, you are right sir. The same statement was made by Ustadji during the radio broadcast also. Different compositions of the raaga are available in you tube. All are unique, I must say. I heard another raaga, Nandkaush rendered by Smt Parveen Sultana, which has very much similar movements of notes. I am a lay man in this field. Forgive me if I am wrong.
What ease, mastery and playfulness in such a complex raag! I wonder who started moving the leather close to the mike trick, tabla players or sarod players?
The guy playing tanpura is Josh Feinberg ,disciple of Ustad Baba Ali Akbar Khan sahib and one of the finest sitar player of this generation on his own rights..I personally have become a fan of his sitar after listening to his Raga Bihag...recently he launched an album featuring legendary Pt. Anindo Chatterjee..he is probably one of the best person one could imagine to sit at that stage giving tanpura accompaniment to Panditji..
A CD of the raaga Chandranandan is available in the market. Different compositions of the same raaga played by Maestro - Ustad Ali Akbar Khan are there in RUclips also. Please look for it.
Yes. It is chandranandan. I had bought one of the first LP of Ali Akbar Khan's rendering of Chandranandan in late 1960s. It is a most intrigueing, mesmerizing 'new' raga he came up with. Pt. Tejendra has done great justice to it if not topped it! Wish i could get a chance to listen to the full version. SANSKARA39
Khansahib told me after the record came out and was a big success,he had to buy his own record to remember the raag because it was a spur of the moment thing. Quite a moment I think. Very close to Raag Jog Kaush, except for the shuddh Ni and of course different melodic phrasing.
You don't know either the people on stage or the reason they are there. You're harsh judgement shows you lack the understanding you claim and are carrying bitterness that should be left outside in the dust.
Yes Raj, this concert was in Kolkata, I'm sure there was many many Indian music students and music lovers who would have actually loved to get the experience to play tanpura with Tejen and kumarda. I don't understand why even high level artist of our country still hungry for validation from westerners. In that way Ustad Amjad Ali Khan is very good, very dignified.
Very good playing by both artists. I cannot help notice the eye sore of those foreigners on stage of a important concert! Were there no willing able and ready local tanpura players in Kolkatta that day? It's sad to see even the highest echelon of our artists using westerners as props of advertisement for validation.
I also felt the same since long ago but I don't dislike the idea since westerners are no less connoiseurs of music and they are putting lot of money promoting our music abroad. Swami Vivekananda also had to go to America to get his due recognition .
+Dipak Dey Absolutely westerners can be and are connoiseurs of ICM and Indians can be and some are connoiseurs of western music. But I would be hard pressed to see a relative novice western classical musician of Indian origin be on stage with a Evegeny Kissin just because he is a novelty. The vice versa is not true. Thank god the Millennial generation of indian artists have more self respect then the post independence ones like the above. The british raj still looms large on the elderly of india!
Coz it is vilambit lay and also the raaga being played is chandranandan..Such a melodious and soothing raaga and also he has to take care of the lay..So he's concentrating...not disinterested
This raga is created by Ustad Ali akbar khan. Please listen to the recordings of Khansaab and see the difference between tejendra. He should not attempt to play this raga
Nice video of Tejendra but that Harry Potter guy sitting on the stage is really weird lol. Is he even playing anything? So sad our maestros still need a gora on stage for validation.
Dear Ken Wells, I meant 'well said' to your comment, not amisha chaudhury's comment. Not every Indian is racist. but by heart, we are world citizen. Please don't misunderstand us.
Too immature, and syrupy sweet, that is tejendra I am refering to, not Kumar. Everyone is either copying Ali Akbar Khan, Nikhil Banerjee, Ravi Shankar or Vilayat Khan. No originality left. In that regard K. Shridar is atleast original.
I do not understand why our musicians have to have atleast two random white people sitting on stage behind them? Is it to give validation that they are worthy of the attention of westerners? Unfortunately the effect of colonialism is still entrenched in many indians. This concert has taken place in Kolkata. Many enthusiastic indian music students would have benifited from playing tanpura with tejendra. Why these two jokers are on the stage with kumarda and tejen?

The most amazing tabla solo I saw when a tablist is playing accompaniment. Panditji is really one of kind.
superhuman quality
In tabla He is soo humble....i mean he isn't even attempting and still everything is beyond perfect and natural....

No expression is sufficient for Kumar Bose , an intellectual but peaceful performance with sarod.

tabla accompaniment of the highest order. Tejen-babu's sarod mellifluous as always....
It is as if Lord Shiva himself playing the Tabla.
Aaha
Kya Sundar baat kehdi...
Raaga Chandranandan - The Master piece created by Ustad Ali Akbar Khan. Unparallel one.

Rasik Biswasji, you have given good and appropriate narration. 🙂

this is one of the most beautiful pieces I have heard, probably in my whole life. well done both to Kumar and to Teju.

Pandit ji, you are a great SAROD player of Ustad Allauddin Khan Sahab Gharana.
Pt. Kumar Bose you are also a great TABLA player of Benaras Gharana.
Simply great. his style is very very unique a fine and matured and mystique blend of gayaki .

Chandranan ...raag created by Ustad Ali Akbar Khan.on the spot during a recording at HMV studio.
He is not a random white person, he is a good musician on his own right. He and his brother (Kay brothers) play indian classical on Saxophone.
🙏❤️🙏
Raag Chandranandan I believe.
Killing!!!!!!!!!!!!
Khansahib told me after the record came out and was a big success,he had to buy his own record to remember the raag because it was a spur of the moment thing. Quite a moment I think. Very close to Raag Jog Kaush, except for the shuddh Ni and of course different melodic phrasing.
This raag is made of four ragas
Chandrakauns, Malkauns, Nandakauns and Kaunsi kaanada
Kumar Bose is outstanding...
😃 awesome
Wah kya baat hai.
@shankyxy yes its chandranandan
agree with you !! ("validation from westerners")
Superlike!!!!!!!!!

@shankyxyz its chandranandan yep

"delayed effect of british raj"
Which taal is he playing?
Vilambit Teen Taal (16 Beats)
which is this raga ?
Very good playing by both artists. I cannot help notice the eye sore of those foreigners on stage of a important concert! +Amisha Chaudhary Such racist shite, learnt from?.
+Ken Wells atleast i have class unlike you who uses profanity.
+Amisha Chaudhary so learned you must be.
is this chandranandan?
Yes
Is that Amit shah on sarod 😂
Total disrespect to the instrument and the player.
ミヒル mihir I am just joking yaar .....!
WE ARE INDIAN FIRST AND LAST :)
what's the raaga?
Raag chandranandan
Raag Chandranandan..a heavenly creation of Ustad Ali Akbar Khan.. on the spot during a recording session.
Why Kumar Bose looks so disinterested here?
He is not disinterested infact he is eternally linked himself with theka and rag chamdranandan... great legend he is..!
Because of not getting so much chance from Tejendraji to show his adakari in tabla rather than only theka.
Coz it is vilambit lay and also the raaga being played is chandranandan..Such a melodious and soothing raaga and also he has to take care of the lay..So he's concentrating...not disinterested

Why, he s playing the same notes but in alternate pattern
is this a recent fad to have a few white student sitting at the background??
Nice video of Tejendra but that Harry Potter guy sitting on the stage is really weird lol. Is he even playing anything? So sad our maestros still need a gora on stage for validation.
Racism is alive and well sadly.
+Rupal Soni Agreed I was thinking the same
+Ken Wells Well said
So sad to see racist comments on this site. If he was Indian and looked the same nothing would have been said.
Dear Ken Wells, I meant 'well said' to your comment, not amisha chaudhury's comment. Not every Indian is racist. but by heart, we are world citizen. Please don't misunderstand us.

You are right .. never heard so sloppy sitar
like the word jokers... thats for public attention I think???
