I own an 83 GTi and it still looks stunning. The shape is so Iconic. What you don't realise is how small they are compared to modern day cars. The first hot hatch, the beginning. ❤️

That’s a late Mk1 1.8 from late 1983 with Pirelli alloys. The original 1.6 110 ps engines were even sweeter, I say that as I had one! Very early ones had 4 speed gearboxes and steel wheels.

*USA checking in. I bought a brand new Rabbit GTI (that was what the MKI Golf GTI was named here in the USA) in 1984, I loved that car, it was a blast to drive, very well made, durable, and reliable as well, the only major difference in the USA was our version of the 1.8L was detuned to 90 hp. I daily drove that car until 1995 when it was stolen! I still miss that car, it was the best vehicle I ever owned! I hope my old friend is still out there on the road..I miss you!*

I got my licence in a '76 MK1 back in 1982. Fantastic machine. Sure the brakes were a bit soft, the clutch bite was way too high (which had me bunny hopping the more embarrassingly so as a learner than all my mates) and the accelerator pedal was way too high (which made your foot ache on long trips) but all was forgiven when a V8 came next door to you at the lights and you light up the front wheels and took off. One of my best memories was racing a mate in his Alfa Romeo GTV1750 Berline Coupe to the beach and leaving him in the dust. This video brings back great memories

I had a Golf GTi Campaign new in 1983. The radio was a dealer fit extra - I had a Panasonic in mine. New price on the road was £7700. My car was Gorgeous Llasa Green metalllic. There were only a 1000 of these cars imported in total in all colours ,so very few of each colour and now super rare. I understand bad people out there are now faking them.

I had a 1979 Mk1 V reg, one of the first to hit the UK I imagine. It was a rotten, Frankenstein, purple-painted monster when I got it but weirdly I met the man who bought it new as we worked in the same office in Edinburgh in the 90's. I had to let it go as it was too far gone at the end and got nothing for it but I still hanker after a nice Lhasa Green Campaign. RIP RSF 484V Hopefully someday I'll get another!

The Mk.1 GTI was nice at the time but in my mind the Alfasud was the first real hot hatch. I owned an Alfasud Sprint in the mid 80's and the Alfasud had already been around a while before the GTI became the affordable fast car to have. The biggest problem with Alfas of the time was rust while VW used better steel. You could almost argue the BMC Mini Cooper S was the first hot hatch except it wasn't a hatchback. Immensely fun to drive though:)

I would still have a Mk1 gti Golf rather than ANY new Golf.
The problem I had with the Mk1 was the positioning of the door mirrors. I was a new driver and was sitting so close to the steering wheel as many new drivers used to do and as I did for my first year or so and with being on top of the steering wheel the mirror was in totally the wrong place for me.

You do not know how badly I wanna drive one. Something about the Mk1 is so petite and loveable, the right amount of boxyness, the same rear shape as the Integrale, the funny Golf knob...
Such a simple little car. That's what hot hatches ought to be. It's funny that the Up! GTi has more in common with the Mk1 than the new Golf. The Mk2 really spoiled the bloodline design wise. They all get the stuffy rear end and all became a bit bubbly.
I really want a Mk1...maybe more than a 205 GTi to be frank. 16v Mk1 is the best 1.9 competitor that never was.
