Monitoring Shorelines - Lens in Action

Shorelines provide critical habitat, filter runoff, and protect against erosion and storm damage. Given the importance of these ecosystems, a wide range of stakeholders have an interest in managing and monitoring waterfronts, including agencies, homeowners, environmental groups, recreation groups, developers, and the general public. In some areas, the US Army Corps of Engineers facilitates projects to protect shorelines, counteracting erosion due to waves and storms. Energy utilities may also hold easements and monitor for changes such as new structures, new docks, vegetation management, and land use change. Many of these changes are visible using imagery and datasets in Lens.
