Whenever I hear this, I'm transported back to 1979, where I'm watching Top of The Pops. while playing Top Trumps with my best friends John and Gilbert. Best of all, it was Thursday - the day before Friday - best day of the week! Happy times indeed!
It was around 1981 and I was around 12. My best friend joined my family for a trip to Myrtle Beach. I had a Walkman, and maybe it had 2 plugs for headphones, or maybe we shared the headphones, but we both listened to this song on one Walkman. We made up a whole dance routine to this song while running up and down the beach, connected to the Walkman. I only remember the "fast lane" part where we pretended to push a shopping cart really fast. A lot of fun ensued as we got more animated acting out the lyrics while trying to stay connected to the Walkman.
Lovely to see the late great John Lewis making an appearance in this and the featured still for this video alongside Robin. So many great musicians helped this classic track along.
I've been looking for information about the late Mr Lewis since I heard him demonstrate the sequencer on this track for a Radio One documentary in 1979. Is there anything online about him?
@@RebeccaTurner-ny1xx Wow that radio 1 piece is exactly how I learned about John Lewis. I had it on cassette (still do) and shared it on my blog years ago. Sadly info on Mr Lewis is sparse though I notice a more detailed Wikipedia entry has appeared in recent times. Obviously he died tragically young. Robin Scott acknowledged him more recently in the podcast interview with Martyn Ware.
also 58- but nothing to cry about (!) cos it means we were also the perfect age to get music like this coming at us! hehe! and along with Numan's "Cars"? hell yeah! you picked a great couple of singles to get together.
First time I heard this, I was working night shift at the golden arcs. After the store closed, we’d crank up the radio and have fun doing the nightly clean-up. Great days, indeed.
It's funny, because, back in the day, I thought this song and the band were a bit strange, and yet, at the same time, I found myself singing it over and over 😀. It was certainly different from the usual stuff back then.
And Mark King played guitars and drums on the second M album The Official Secrets Act. His sole bass appearance on the album was on the track "Maniac." Robin Scott's brother Julian played the bass on the other tracks.
I loved this track when I first heard it: catchy, with witty lyrics and a fabulous sequenced bassline. There is a huge number of excellent official remixes, such as by Devo.
I remember this coming out. My sister bought the 7 inch. It was like nothing out at the time. I know most of the musicians and production had a background with great artists like Bowie but even Bowie wasn't producing stuff like this.
i remember this song on the radio in79...was 9years old hanging out with one of my long time friends....we lived in apartment complexes.....crazy times....
As stated in the official video description, I believe that’s Brigit Novik, the actual background singer. And yes, even at 10 I was strangely taken by her fluid head movements in a way I couldn’t articulate.
Pop Muzik" is a 1979 song by M, a project by English musician Robin Scott, from the debut album New York • London • Paris • Munich. The single, first released in the UK in early 1979, was bolstered by a music video (directed by Brian Grant) that was well received by critics🎺🎷🥁🎸🎶❤️
This song and Video Killed The Radio Star takes me back to those fun days of good music. That doesn't exist today it seems. Groups like Devo and Madness are also good examples.
So did I & it was a 'double groove' record as in it played 2 different songs depending on where the stylus of the record player landed.............unique & great marketing!
Older American football fans will remember the Miami Dolphins quarterback, Bob Griese (pronounced Greasy). Every time I hear this song, instead of hearing Pop,Pop Music, I hear Bob, Bob Griese. Once you hear it, you can’t un-hear it.
Video Killed the Radio Star was purposely the first Video ever played on MTV, and it's 100 times better than the inane Pop Muzik. The Buggles were at least an actual rock group at the forefront of the synth pop new wave, and both of them joined Yes to make an album, and Trevor Horn went on to become probably one of the most influential music producers of the 80s and 90s. And Geoff Downes became the keyboardist of Asia.
This tune will never get old
I went to high school and college on this song.
Merry Christmas!
This song is timeless.
Even in the world 200 years from now
Your rating will never go down !!

OMG - Top Trumps! This song AND Top Trumps - what memories that brings😃
First time I heard this I was twelve...it was friday afternoon...and it was Bank Holiday weekend !!...get in there !!!!!
Top trumps .. if you can keep your best card until last..
you knew you’ve won..
happy days ..

Funny thing was that in my neighborhood every though that this group were all black.
Yes!! I was the same age. We were riding the strip in myrtle Beach when I first heard it that same summer
Boogie with a suitcase. Classic line.!!
Great song that's why it hit no. 1 in 1979

Late? He’s not dead
@juicyfruit4378 John Lewis sadly passed away in the mid 80s. I know Robin Scott is very much still with us and long may that continue.
@ I just checked on Wiki and he says he is alive - I liked the song so I looked up to what he was up to thanks for the info
I was 10 when this came out and used to sing it all the time...What a catchy beat and lyrics...
I love how people call this an 80s classic which defines the decade, yet it’s ACTUALLY a 70s song, as is “Video Killed the Radio Star”!
Exactly!!!
@macwyll What I find extremely funny is that some people were having an "All 80s party" and they played the 1978 Blondie song "Heart of Glass"!
Just about the first single I ever bought. Still have it, still love it!
Wunderbar! "New York, London, Paris, Munich..."
"Everybody talk about... Pop music!"
Still sounds just as good as it did in '79 👍🏽
In 1979 I brought this awesome song at the age of 14 along with Gary Human's Cars single. Scary to think Im now aged 58 and counting😢 😢
Human 😂😂😂😂
Gary Numan, but yes.
also 58- but nothing to cry about (!) cos it means we were also the perfect age to get music like this coming at us! hehe! and along with Numan's "Cars"? hell yeah! you picked a great couple of singles to get together.
Same here brother. Another time, another world. Cheers from NJ.
Had those songs too and The Knack album with My Sharona.
First time I heard this, I was working night shift at the golden arcs. After the store closed, we’d crank up the radio and have fun doing the nightly clean-up. Great days, indeed.
One of the first singles i bought with my pocket money as a kid. Love this song.
Ditto ❤
ditto ditto 👍
The full album was my first purchase.
When singles cost less than 2 quid.
Good music!!😊
Used to listen to this song all the time back in my days
Fabulous. Loved it when it first came out. Huey Lewis and Ray Parker Jr owe Robin some cash !
Brings back great memories.😊

💎📀🔝⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 👍😃❤
👏🙂 45 лет этой шедевральной песне, но она до сих пор не стареет.
Благодарен за ваши труды и публикацию. 👋😊
Phil Gould from Level 42 on drums.
And Mark King played guitars and drums on the second M album The Official Secrets Act. His sole bass appearance on the album was on the track "Maniac." Robin Scott's brother Julian played the bass on the other tracks.
Beautiful song of *M*😘😘😘
Omg i love this song!!
Always liked this song, fun
Love her background vocals.
That's great that the background singer is wearing a sari!
I think that's Brigitte Vinchon aka Brigit Novik, Scott's girlfriend.
Thats Robins wife isn't it
Predicted the South Asian domination.
Would that be allowed today?
......and wot's the point to the woman who's wearing a tracksuit in the background!!!!😳
Takes me back to my High school years 💎
I was thinking the same thing. 45 years...wow
I loved this track when I first heard it: catchy, with witty lyrics and a fabulous sequenced bassline. There is a huge number of excellent official remixes, such as by Devo.
I drove my mum mad, playing and singing this song ad nauseam when it came out. Still one of my faves.
I remember this was on constant repeat between movies when HBO first went on cable.
Classic Forever.
This wonderful single, and The Buggles was basically a big wave bye-bye to the 70s! Listen to how fresh this still sounds! Who isn't dancing?!
I'm not. Dropping a Mondo Dook instead.
I remember this coming out. My sister bought the 7 inch. It was like nothing out at the time. I know most of the musicians and production had a background with great artists like Bowie but even Bowie wasn't producing stuff like this.
A great song that makes me dancing! 😊
i remember this song on the radio in79...was 9years old hanging out with one of my long time friends....we lived in apartment complexes.....crazy times....
Classic 🎶
Who is she...and how does she do that neck thing....awesome.
As stated in the official video description, I believe that’s Brigit Novik, the actual background singer. And yes, even at 10 I was strangely taken by her fluid head movements in a way I couldn’t articulate.
Looks like a wind up. 😁
AHHHH❤😊
00:03 on Drums: Phil Gould .
Great!

Clever song.
This song also comes under,
Evergreen Music!
Very nice composing pleasant music, the lady looks really great with that Indian saree dress.
Pop Masterpiece
Nice to meet you at last Mr. Scott!
Wow... Has it really been 45 years...
'Fraid so ! ! ! 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
estás canciones nunca envejecen 👏
I was 20 when this song came out it was good at the bars
This song and Video Killed The Radio Star takes me back to those fun days of good music. That doesn't exist today it seems. Groups like Devo and Madness are also good examples.
Hi Robin good song
To me this is the first 80's New Wave (US) / Synthpop (EU) song. It has all the traits that the movement became known for.
Le bon playback des 70' 80' 😉
I bought this song on vinyl 45 when I was in high school
So did I & it was a 'double groove' record as in it played 2 different songs depending on where the stylus of the record player landed.............unique & great marketing!
Pretty much sums up the 80’s.
Your 80s sucked compared to mine then.
@
Makes 0 sense.
It's from 1979 though.
Excellent tune...The Fonz is excellent too
Brigitte just SO cool
Older American football fans will remember the Miami Dolphins quarterback, Bob Griese (pronounced Greasy). Every time I hear this song, instead of hearing Pop,Pop Music, I hear Bob, Bob Griese. Once you hear it, you can’t un-hear it.
M 4EVER! the greatest!!
Amazing sound on 8track tape 1979 no download fees to pay then 8track tapes come fresh from the recording studio.😅😊❤
As a kid, I thought this was George Layton from Doctor in Charge and It Ain't Half Hot Mum. I thought he'd followed Don Estelle into the charts 😂😂
0:39 points at her stomach and says " everybody made it" 😅
Now i AM looking and again and again ... 😃 ... Everybody made it .. And how she look At him 😅
You guys are insanely creepy.
👍♥️
la escucho en finales 2024 en mi LP de doble surco.
Double groove 12 inch single. Anybody else remember this?
Yes I bought it and still have it somewhere. :)
Out comes the 9 year boy in me when this plays
I never realised before, but there are elements of what would become rap in this song.
Or repetitive call outs like a carnival barker.
Rap was being formed separately just before this.
Dang, that pregnant lady did not look thrilled to be on that stage, lol.
Pregnant Lady = Robin's Wife
That's the way she was on the music video though she did give him a couple of small smiles in this show.
That's Brigit Novik. She and the singer, Robin Scott were together for a long time. They have three kids. One of which, was in this video. 😊
Absolutely mad then, absolutely mad now. 100 years ahead of his time, or possibly 100 years out of date. It’s hard to say for certain.
That's Phil Gould from level 42 on drums. I heard he and Mark King were formerly of M.
Such an unknown commodity! If you haven't listened to the album "Official Secrets Act" do so immediately!
🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Is Brigit Vinchon chewing gum?
Appears to be.
I will always think Brigitte Vinchon (Brigit Novik) is one of the coolest human beings on the planet. Or elsewhere.
This Music remember Ray Parker Jr and his GHOSTBUSTER!!!!!
Level 42s Phil Gould on the drums.
Who is the pianist?
Phil Gould from Level 42 on drums
1978 San Antonio. 18 years old. Was in this strip club. This chicken came out on stage and danced to this. Good memories.
talk about
pop muzik!
Came out around the same time as Computer Games by Mi-Sex.
That backup singer does NOT want to be there 😂
When the cool teacher crashes the talent show
Wow i love that indian looking lady ❤
Who ya gonna call? Pop music.
or maybe Huey lewis and the news.
Looks like Brigitte has a bun in the oven?
Pop indeed.
You can thank Robin for that..
I love that the microphone looks like a pen
Forget that video killed the radio star song, it was this song that got us ready to watch videos on TV
Hot!😅
Just think of the uproar this video would cause now. People screaming cultural appropriation
Sounds a lot like a Talking Heads tune 😀
"Mix me a molotov". mmm
POP….
POP…..
CORN CHICKEN 🍿🐓
how the hell does he remember the lines to that song? nick nack patty whack, talkabout?
I liked Gill Clark.
ha ha i bought the 45
Proves again that talking to the music isn’t exclusively owned by rap.
Could be any recent "rave" stuff....drill, trance etc. A valid piss take
Catchy, stupid, interesting, ridiculous, oversynth'd, great, terrible, 7os, 8os...all these things can be true at the same time.
И все!!!!🤨
