- Tuned goes to Bondurant School of High Performance Driving to meet up with Formula Drift driver Corey Hosford and his 800 HP Blown LS3 Nissan 350Z Drift car. We learn what separates a drift car from a race car, and Matt gets to work on his drifting technique behind the wheel of a monster race car.

The mustache adds 500 hp
Why do people hate on muscle or JDM or etc they are all cars they are all different they all have different purpose car enthusiast should love all cars I mean look what happens when you combine them you still get an amazing machine so next time you drive by a muscle or JDM acknowledge their beauty why cant we all get along I love muscle cars but I drive a JDM so hopefully we end up in a car world not a JDM or muscle world :)
I agree 100% The whole argument of JDM vs. muscle or euro or whatever else is ridiculous. I would absolutely love a Silvia or R34 but on the other hand owning a Nova, Firebird, GTO, Camaro, Mustang, Chevelle (none later than 1969 for me though), etc would be a completely different experience. They're different styles of cars which generally have their good and bad sides.

no 70 challenger?! O:
TheShale187 Welll maybe a '69 Challenger lol
Matt Farrah's face looked so scared when he was on the skid pad lol
the last quote about golf and cars just made my life make sense thank you!!!
This dude is awesome, gives no fucks about anything other then motorsports.
LS v8s make every car better!
I lolold Matt was man handeling that thing! Good stuff dude!
One of the most entertaining episodes yet! Love it!
those polarized golf Raybans are so 1990s!!
7:40 rip cone
I mean every chance I get, so i practiced when I had the (2) FRS's, the GT500, the SLS GT, the Lexus GS350 F-Sport, and a full day of lessons in a C6 Corvette. Probably 5-6 times in the last year.
That was one of the best Drive episodes I have seen yet. Great job
Its absolutely incredible how stupid people are. They are complaining about the car having a v8 bla bla bla. Stop de bullshit, for drifting you need horsepower, and it´s much better when you have a motor that can deliver you instant power, just like a v8 does. Less lag better drifts. Of course people will disagree with me, but i know you can drift with no problems with a turbo car, of course! But i honestly prefer a really powerful v8 than an twin turbo 2jz. Personally i love the sound of a 2jz, its a total eargasm. But turbos have lag. Of course antilag, still my answer would be a v8 with lots of torque for isntant power. I am not a v8 fanboy or anything. Just my opinion, hope you guys can be respectful.
Alberto Pettine i completely agree with you i believe all of the 2014 fd cars were all v8 swapped besides the rwd tc Fredric asbo drove which was a 4 cylinde turbo.
BROSEPH997 and Mad Mike (this year) drove his fresh 4 Rotor Twin Turbo Low Psi Mx5
Alberto Pettine yeah it really threw me off when he reveled the mx5(miata). i thought for sure he would of returned with another fd rx7.
BROSEPH997 But that Mx-5 tho.
Alberto Pettine i know it looks soooo mean
800hp in a light car with suspension set up and a cage ummmm thats a race car on any given sunday.
This is the episode ive been waiting for! Amazing job, dudes are all cool and most importantly, car is one hell of a proper and beautiful beast. Pleasure to watch...
Thats the first time I have every heard anyone compare drifting to golf, but it works. Great job on the video.
I wonder how fast that beast is on a 1/4 mile..
i wonder if it could hook up off the line
I wonder when you guys start to realize driving a car is so much more than going in a straight line as fast as you can. Goddamn americans
so wondering how fast it is in a quarter mile automatically implies that that's ALL we care about with cars? NO, that's not the only thing I'm interested in. i wouldn't be at a video about a drift car if i didn't give a shit about it. straight line speed is cool, drifting is cool, motoGP is cool, F1 is cool, the 24hr of Le Mans is cool. He and I made two simple statements, and you automatically assume that we know nothing else of driving. Your ignorance amuses and annoys me.. PS fuck you i'm Canadian
@@MrYlijumala Im European and straight line speed is very very important since that's what you can use every day...btw why do you assume that's the only thing we care about( drifting is awesome too)
I love 350z's and I love v8's. But the 350 should have the VQ in it IMO. Not a v8, not a RB or anything else... Keep a 350z a 350z.
It's not like the VQ's super iconic. I love the sound and poweband of my VQ, but for a drift car an LS is really more sensible
LOL they are drifting... not trying to please idiot fanboys.
LSx motors are super reliable for competition. Its why so many drivers use them in their builds. As much as I love the VQ in a z33 or a 13b in an FD, they're much more expensive to maintain in race conditions.
lol fuckvq's especially boosted ones.
vk56
The best one yet!
Thank you for making this!
Love this LS3 350z! Sounds amazing, looks amazing & performs even better!
did they put a v8 on the 350z
ls3...yes
it sounded like it
beautiful,isnt it?
Hydra Entertainment and Gaming idk?
Lots of Money is the key to become a pro drifter lol
pro with a 180sx stock can do it. depends on track too.
The famous quote "If you can't drift a 100 HP car, 1000 HP means nothing"
even on a stock 180sx. you need money. you got 400$ to blow plus another 200-400 for a track day? then to do it professionally requires practice, which means youd have to repeat those costs over and over again. so yes, you need money. atleast alot of money you can afford to spend.
The best show on Drive channel, epic! :D
because it's very easy to grab. The video doesn't show it, but that car is a very violent ride, and having something that you literally cannot miss (like a tall handbrake) is a pretty good idea.
I'll bet Keiichi Tsuchiya is crying all the way to the bottom of his racing boots with the way that real drifting skill has been replaced by big engines with big horsepower, I prefer the old school stuff when you didn't need 600+bhp to drift. You needed REAL SKILL.
well said!
That's cute... The DK is probably lol right now..
So I guess you have real skill and drift 😐
dat ugly v8 sound... ugh, how could you?
because they have a better power band than a 6 cyl turbo engine
Hey i think it sounds awesome lol. Im a import guy but both engines are good.
if you havent figured it out real drifters dont have the money to maintain high performance boosted motors but i can afford regular maintenance on a ls motor and keep my money for tires but have fun with all those broken parts
TheRealTieLUR if you havent figured it out "real drifters" get sponsored.
TheRealTieLUR Real drifters have money, that 350Z cost over 100 grand. The engine alone is over 30 grand, and thats if its not the more expsensive one which is 45 grand, I know because I was just looking at the same thing when looking for a block to use in my own drift project. They use V8s for the torque, yes you can get shit tons of power out of some 4 and 6 cylinders but you won't get the torque. Torque is a major plus to have in drifting. A real drifter knows that. If you watch D1, Formula Drift, you would see both kinds of engine are used, but the V8s are taking over because the other guys are having trouble keeping competitive with what they have with their turbo'd up JDM engines. That came from the mouths of the drifters themselves, some of the guys who are making the switch from JDM to Muscle under the hood.
Because this one has 800 hp. And unlike a sky-high boosted V6, it's actually reliable and makes tons of low-end torque with immediate throttle response.
Great cinematography Matt. Awesome video.
350z ruined . A car does not need so much horsepower and torque to drift ..
Actually it needs the torque to drift.
James Juden he drives a honda.. no such thing as torque in his dictionary
Monera96 poor bastard =/
Lars Finnegan he drives a 370z
Gregorio Stampolini He did used to run the 350 though tbf
Seriously couldn't have asked for a better ending statement. Excellent work!
when you only have three sets of tires, there are only so many shots you can get. Ideally, we'd need 7 or 8 sets to get all the shots we'd need. I burned through a single set in 7 minutes of drifting.
I love seeing the way pro drifters use their hands and feet. When they transition and take their hands off the wheel, and the insane footwork they do. They make it look effortless.
drifting is the most fun thing you can do in a car, and this is from someone who has done many, many different things with cars.
The look on Matts face when he was on the skid pad was priceless! He was having fun.
Congrats guys! The production level of this video is remarkable thanks to the unusual camera mounting. Probably the controlled environment of an empty track helped, but good for you for extracting the best out of it. Also, burning tires feels goooood!
We showed you a Ford Truck that started with a V8 and was swapped for a twin turbo six, and all anyone did was bitch that it didn't have a V8 in it. Plus, pro drifters don't get points for making "creative" horsepower. They get points for going as fast as possible and making as much smoke as possible, all while trying to not grenade their engines. The LS engine is an excellent platform for a reliable pro drift car.
That was one of the best DRIVE episodes yet...the intro was hilarious!
"and a great big bag of balls" awesome hahaha
this was a very good episode. Chris and matt have been doing really great jobs.
Editing 9/10
Guest 10/10
Awesome video Matt. Thanks. Keep 'em coming.
I liked Matt's tech chat about car feel and technique. ..keep it up
Love the tuned series! Bad ass videos!
Chris drifts cars on camera to make a living. That's what I call a professional. The same way a TV or film stunt driver is a professional. You dont have to compete to be a pro at your craft.
wow
the quality keeps getting better and better!
keep it going guys, and bring back DriveClean :)
yes. When we were in Houston for the Venom GT record run, they gave us a minivan that literally was a 2013 with 5 miles on it. It was so nice and new, we didn't beat on it at all. The red one in this video was a 2011 with 45,000 miles on it and it was a piece of shit anyway.
Great video!!
Car with ballz - check
Driver with balls - check
And lots of tire smoke, great way to start the week. Thanks!
we have one rule for tuned as per our executive producers: No stock vehicles. That's our only guideline to work by. So far, we've shown three street legal vehicles (Venom GT, SDHQ Raptor, VCMC FR-S), and two track-only vehicles (AVI Corvette, KSPort 350Z). Of these five vehicles, only the AVI Corvette did not start with a stock OEM vehicle. So technically, 80% of the episodes so far this season are modified street cars. TST is for street cars, Tuned is for modified cars. It isn't that hard.
Matt you own me in the comments every time I get smart, so all I can say is you killed it. The look on your face when your focusing on drifting is priceless. I wouldn't want to mess with you. You BIG cuddely circus bear.
that may be true at the amateur level, but at the professional level, you need a V8 (in the US). In tandem drifting, if the lead car is going so fast that the chasing car can't keep up, the lead car will win the duel. When a couple of guys did V8's, they became so dominant that in order to be competitive in the sport, everyone else had to go with V8's too. There are exceptions of course, but most teams don't have the money to do some crazy build and the LS is affordable, reliable, and powerful.
Matt Farah you are the man!! I see Corey all the time at Firebird drift and drags, I really want to do a ride along with Corey. This is my favorite episode and have yet to ever dislike a video you have created. You are pretty much my idol and have my dream job! Keep it up man!
I loved the golf analogy, i play golf for my school and have been an avid drifting fan for going on 5 years now. When I'm out on the course the next time that I have a tricky put I'll just think about a tricky mountainside hairpin.
@Ethan Curtis thanks. As a fellow racer and golfer I'm fairly proud of that voiceover
loved this episode great job!
Love Zs. Love Corey glasses. looking super fly
love the conclusion!!
That was undoubtedly . . . The best analogy for drifting I've ever heard in my life
Awesome video! Love going to formula drift events. They are so much fun! Highly recommend to everyone
love that car, seen alot of drift cars but thats probably one of the cooler ones i've seen in a while. sounds phenomenal and looks like its very nicely set up. I know its not super rare or anything, but still a nice 350z.
@Connor Dunning instant torque
Crazy to think this is 9 years old. I remember watching these as a teenager, thinking this was going to replace Top Gear. Definitely should give this a second go
Nice vid guys! Keep them coming!!
Honestly, it wasn't terror. I was on a skid pad, so there was nothing to be scared of. More like focus and frustration that I was about to lose what was, at the time, a perfect figure 8.
beatiful car like a Z... monster of an engine like an ls3... with the drifting skills of this guy... equals pure magic.
That last sentence is why I love this guy
Thanks for responding Matt, I really appreciate it. Loved your Hummer H1 story on Jalopnik by the way!
Seen this at Formula Drift Round 3 Invasion at the Palm Beach International Raceway, got close and personnel with this beast and it was amazing! He not only has 1, he has 3 from what I counted! Damn thing is a legend!
Matt the concentration in your face is hilarious. Corey makes such a difficult art look so damn easy.
@Connor Dunning some do, yes, and a few have been successful
for judging purposes in Formula Drift. it's so the judges can see if the guy in back is gaining quickly (needing to brake) on corner entry.
800hp of shivers up my spine. loved it.
Grip Royal Wheel for the win!
A great look at drifting with zero douche factor. That's tough to do. I salute you, sir.
THE SOUND of that thing, is AMAZING!!!
The Z is an awesome car and Matt does a great job as always
that sound of the car is deadly
Awesome...Matt is making the rounds in AZ! Go Hosford!!
What did I gather from this? mini vans are AWESOME!!
more to come man, you'll enjoy the next one
Great episode Matt!
Awesome video thanks TUNED!
That minivan looked hot coming out that burnout :D
Great job guys. What a video.
Awesome video. I want more!!
Love the episode Matt. Can't wait to save enough money to go take a class at bondurant.
Loved the comparison to golf the episode ended on.
It's not about capacity with the LS engine. The engine itself is physically very small compared to other "advanced" V8's, so you can fit it in almost anything, like a car that came with a V6. It may be simple, but simple is good when you're racing and don't want to replace the engine every season. European fanboys won't ever understand the genius that is the LS motor, but people should be more open minded about what racing drivers look for in an engine: small, light, powerful, reliable. LS.
"When it gets more angle it pulls for you" Definition of a drift car
Great vid... Thanks Matt!!!
i thought i found my love in a nissan silvia s15, but this video completely changed my mind, at least for the next few days ^^
I love making a transition when all you do is let go of the wheel, then grab it again where you want it. Great feeling.
He mostly looks focused, but I think there's just a little bit of fear mixed in there as well. That's not ragging on Matt at all, guys like him spend their lives looking for cars that are capable of scaring them.
this season of Tuned is super duper
I absolutely love tuner cars!
Matt's face when first learning to drift this car. Priceless
that last line was just golden xD
I like the race car videos Matt!
It's essentially a 1989 Ford Transit with XJ220 running gear. It was made for Jaguar to "secretly" test the XJ220's running gear prior to the production car's launch.
So it's a van with a 3.5L twin-turbocharged V6 making 542hp and 476lb-ft of torque. 0-60mph in under 5 seconds, 0-100mph in under 10.
The rental burnouts really kill me, damn epic lol
I love tuned! keep it up! I would love to see a tuned mustang.
Well you do have to score it somehow, and it's a difficult enough skill that it's worthy of SOME type of competitive series. If you can find a better way of scoring it....
