I was born in 1946 and lived my childhood years in Santa Ana. Our neighborhood was exactly like this one in Burbank and just as clean, well-maintained and well-landscaped. This video truly carried me back with warm memories to my childhood. Thank you.

Nicely done Mr. Schmitt. My grand parents lived just a couple of blocks away on West Alameda near the horse stables across that street from the Pick Wick Drive-in.
OMG! Both my grandparents lived next door to each other on Avon, just north of Magnolia from the 30's thru the 70's. My dad literally married the girl next door. This looks almost exactly like I remember the neighborhood in the 60's, except for the 40's era cars. I remember walking with my grandparents down to Magnolia for ice cream in the evening. Thanks for the memories!
I used to live a block away from there, one block over other side of Magnolia! The camera truck goes south on California, turns right on Clark, then left on Lima, then right on Verdugo. Must have been before the California theater was built in 1949(?) since it's not in the film.
I was born in 45 and remember our large house in Burbank, it had a small house in the back for the House-Keeper and a stable for two horses. My father was just a manager, not rich and I remember the Helm's truck and the smell of the baked goods as he opened up the drawers.
No you didn't come from a rich family. Everyone had a large house, with another house out back, for their house keeper to live in and a horse stable. Your idea of "rich" might be a bit different than most!
@@boballen1294 Bobby...just read the man’s comment. He’s saying he came from a working class background. Dad was a manager (Foreign concept today I know) of men who came home from the horrors of war on a global scale (the commenter’s father) , and worked very hard to earn a living and provide for their families. California was THE place to be at that time. Lots of these houses have a second smaller apartment on the property...not uncommon at all
This was back when kids were able to be raised by a parent, many people were craftsmen, and so they either built and/or maintained things, and took care of them, many people were not on the welfare system, so whatever people owned, they wanted to maintain, because nothing was "free" in life, and people that we now call "homeless", actually have mental disorders. Back then, there were a lot more institutions where they were housed, where doctors would try to treat them/medicate them, which sounds horrible, until you realize that the modern alternative has them try to live on their own, homeless, in-and-out of jail. ...and the most important thing of all, the only "hard" drugs that were tolerated at all, were tobacco products, and alcohol. There really was almost nothing else to use and abuse, to screw with a person's mind.

I grew up in Southern California. Born not long after this film was shot and, yes, it really did look like that. Might have been filmed mid-day during the week(no children) and either those who worked had already driven to work (few, if any cars driving around) or for the most part the vehicles were in garages. We do see some parked(a ‘47 or 48 Packard, a 46 or 47 Dodge, a 48 Mercury, and a 49 Pontiac). Thank you for posting this, such memories!
@@almeggs3247 It was. I do remember what were called ‘street car buttons’ in a small middle lane in the center of certain boulevards where people waited for the streetcar. The Red Trolley was different, it was operated by Pacific Electric and was in and around Los Angeles.
This is remarkable ..My guess 1948 ish given the cars and a few TV antennas ...Someone born the day this was filmed would be at least 72-73 years old now ...Incredible ...
So pretty, I've been living in Burbank since 2011 and one of the things I love about it is the wide tree lined streets and how clean it is. Residential streets are narrower in LA, Hollywood in particular.
Born in Burbank 1946 - Miller Elementary, Emerson Elementary, John Muir Jr High, Burbank High. A lot of Burbank still looks like this, but much has changed. Lockheed was the main employer in th 40s-70s. Then slowly pulled out. Burbank survived somehow. The one thing I don't miss is the smog. In the 50s and early 60s it was so bad sometimes you couldn't see more than about 100 feet. Smelled terrible and hurt the lungs. Love this footage. Thanks for posting it.
I went to Emerson for a few weeks in 1969 before we moved to Reseda. I remember walking to my grandma's house after school and the smell of carnations at a house along the way.
My Uncle Art Miley was a supervisor at Lockheed into the 1970s, he was revered at Lockheed by the men who were supervised by him. He and my Aunt, my father's sister, lived in Sherman Oaks. Good people. Miss them so much.
Living in Burbank most of my life (I'm 70), I would say that this was filmed May/June 1949. The camera passes a 1949 Pontiac. Growing up in Burbank back then was the Best Place to Be!
I’d agree that it was sometime 49 or after. How many had those terrazzo floors too? Not a car parked on the street. Now, it’s full of parked cars on street and in driveways.

I live in a 1946 house on Clark ave! This is amazing. Love the grease buckets placed at the curb. Its amazing how little has changed. If this were anywhere else. South valley, west side, Hollywood. Most all of these houses would have been torn down and in their place mini mansions. I love Burbank. Slow to change, and people who live here like the modest mid century vibe, and don’t want it destroyed.

It's hard to find videos from the 30s or 40s of residential neighborhoods. It's always downtown or tourist attractions. This is great! Been looking for something like this.
I Wish the movie studios had spent more time driving around So Calif back in the 30's and 40's filming all the farms, orange groves and open land before it was all lost to development. I hope some day a realistic VR game will be developed to recreate what So Calif looked like back in the day.

My dad's childhood home is in this video. He said the movie studios regularly filmed this area for stock footage, so you're not wrong about it looking like a movie set.
@@jeremymacdonald5584 the cracks in the concrete are covered with a special fluid tar that cures quickly and somewhat rubbery, to fill the crevasse, 1:40.

This area looked similar to my neiborhood in Long Beach CA where I lived from 1960 to 1964. I remember this time in California well. I rode my bicycle for miles from home without any fear at all. This was the best time to be a boy growing up.

I'm from Maine & grew up with the television always on. This is exactly the way I've always pictured the revered state of California. I always (still do) watch the background scenes in tv shows that are filmed in southern California. My parents lived there for 2 years in San Diego. My father was in the Navy & worked at the hospital. They loved it. My oldest brother was born in the San Diego Naval hospital. So in my mind California, in general is like a paradise to me. It looks so happy, bright & American. The sun' s always out, my parents told me. So nice! I still have not gotten there to see it, but will. It's my favorite place on the whole planet that I want to see. Thanks for these awesome videos. They're beautiful!
I can relate to your impression of California. I was born here and lived here most of my life and I can tell you that compared to other places, California feels like a movie set, but real! It feels like its Saturday everyday.

Yes, we do have some areas that have run down over the decades, much homeless in the big cities, and a variety of problems. But, that being said, some areas are still as nice as in this video. We have some gorgeous architecture up through the 1940s, and we do have some of the most beautiful natural areas in the country, IMO! Plus our climate is fantastic! Hope you get to visit someday! :)

Or maybe there was nothing to do back then in the house so they went out. Like these days you can survive entertainment off of anything in your home so you see a pile of cars.
@@Dance_Party Cars were also more expensive and not attainable, so the average family only had one car. Now it's not uncommon for families to have 3 or more cars.
Most people didn't actually own cars, if they did, they had one, and it was much smaller and could fit in the garage. A modern card wouldn't fit down the driveway into the garage in the back. I know b/c I live in one of these houses. A mini might make it...
Wow. This looks like my neighborhood now! That's crazy to see how little has changed over the decades. Even the black lines all over the road where they repaired the cracks are just like that today.
I played this at 0.5x speed (bicycle) and there's more details to pick out. In the last 90 seconds I spotted many roof mounted TV antennas for a video that has 1940's in its title.
@@cascade5682 Roof mounted TV antennas ought make a big time comeback as greedy cable TV is getting it's cord righteously cut! And ground antennas (both indoor and outdoor) just simply don't receive well enough if you live in a dead zone. I speak from experience. I have never had cable TV in my life while living alone. Nor will I ever! If my on-air TV has nothing good on at the moment, I watch RUclips over my cellular internet, with help from my #WeBoost "Eqo" cell signal booster. Unfortunately, where I live, I can only mount it on the ground. But it still helps! I quit CoNcast home internet in 2015, never to return!

Being able to capture just a small moment in time is so priceless, we take it for granted everyday. Even a video just filming the streets of burbank 80 some years ago is so amazing to Me. Simply because at some point in this crazy messed up time line that we're all in right now, that was the present, even if merely for a moment... It's beautiful
@@KA-vs7nl - they look pristine because the population then was much smaller than today and as a a result less vehicles on the road. The roads were not over used that contribute to wear and tear.

@@Uaarkson It's definitely not, the streets are in terrible condition and a lot of the grass is dead. You can look for yourself on google earth street view, another person commented the locations above.
You should read some of the Raymond Chandler novels from this era. He writes about what a dirty, nasty city LA is, with thugs and cheats and scoundrels seemingly hiding in every alley and around every corner. Of course, it was fiction. But romanticizing the past is a dangerous road to go down. People have been doing it for millennia, but in general, most things have gotten better, not worse.
Dutch Elm Disease was heading west and about to hit Detroit. California still had a few more years, but the day was fast approaching when it would lose these trees. Nice video, love the vintage vehicles and white picket fences.

My dad was in the Pacific and what he described to me, now I understand why he never talked about it, the horrors of it. People back here at home had no clue of the horrific realities that played out overseas.
My dad just excitedly told us, "That was my family car! And my childhood home!" We also learned a few new things we'd never heard thanks to memories being reignited by this beautiful trip down his childhood lanes.
I grew up near Burbank and know the area well, the residential neighborhood looks the same, it's the surrounding area outside the neighborhood that has changed.
I was born in Glendale in 1948 and lived in Burbank, east of Glenoaks in the 70's. My Mom lived in Glendale then Burbank until she passed about 5 years ago. I know the city pretty well but don't recognize any of these streets. Anyone know where this is? Would be cool to compare then and now using Street View.
No its not Sun Valley, it is at the start of the film, on California st facing North toward Magnolia Ave (the Magnolia Theater was on the left corner) traveling south to the next street Clark Ave. (I lived at 2610 Clark Ave, a few shortblocks to the left.) turning right the vacant lot is Verdugo Park now and the swimming pool at the end of the block. Over one block on Clark Ave then left on Lima st. Avon st and the alley turn converge into Lima. Turn right on Verdugo Ave. Next right is Whitnall Highway. End. So as it turns out Burbank looks different after all. You know the big green dome on Hollywood Way by the Air port..? That dome is right on top of the exact spot my family's home was at. I lived there till 7th grade, then we moved to 2610 Clark Ave. LOL.. LOL Burbank looks way different. Good or bad I think it's all in the eye of the beholder. What I learned is I should read the comments, I actually thought I was the one who ID where the streets were. I am not sure about the autos I am glad to know. I am 73 now. You know you younger people are not wrong it probably does look the same. Do you want to trade..? I am tired of being 73....LOL
Actually, littering was far more of a problem in the 1940s than it is today. So big of a problem that in 1956 they finally launched anti-littering PSAs. While tossing garbage onto the sidewalks and public parks is taboo now, it wasn't back then. I've spent most of my adult life living in Europe where litter on the streets is commonplace in places like Italy and Greece precisely because the generations didn't grow up with the same conditioning.

This is the post war years after WWII. It seems like the tail end of the 40s or beginning of the 50s. My dad tells me about similar areas like this where he grew up in ELA from the 30s to early 60s, before it became predominantly hispanic. One area was known as Lan Franco in the late 30s to early or mid 40s, and another El Sereno sometime in the 40s. It was absolutely nothing like it is today and since the early 60s when it started going to the dogs. It was multicultural but in a good way, and everyone was proud to be American, kept up their small homes and front lawns, and worked very hard. Those places are slums and very dangerous at night. Sad to see how hardly anything changes for the better, always for the worst. But I've been to some neighborhoods that still look like this today! There are a few in Paso Robles and at least one or more in San Dimas. Amazing little towns with original homes in clean, safe neighborhoods. SoCal is not all bad but it's unfortunately rare to find nice, clean neighborhoods with old homes like the ones shown in this video.
South Pasadena, Glendora, La Verne, Upland…. There’s actually quite a few smaller cities that are still pretty close to the original state. The route from El Sereno into Alhambra must’ve been gorgeous! A lot of those areas are still beautiful but unfortunately they’ve seen better days.
I'm a former Burbank resident and still live just a stone's throw away. I'd wager that most of the unassuming little houses you see in this clip are still standing. Of course now, they sell for 4-5 times what they would in other parts of the country.
I lived over on Keystone St. Between Alameda Ave and Oak St. The house was built in June of 1941. My mom and dad bought it that month for approximately $5,000. Over the next 58 years they added a bdrm, den .5 bath and remodeled the kitchen. After my parents passed away, we sold it for $320,000 in 1999. Last September (2020), it was sold for $1,005,000. That's right. An 80 year old house with NO POOL sold for over $1,000,000. JEEEZ!

Never could afford a car ever so i'm stuck alone in a crap place. And now they tearing up everything to build $2000 a month apartments i can barely afford a $600 one. I been working my whole life for nothing to live like crap. And prices go up everyday and make it worse.. I have no idea how people can live like that unless you are a moviestar or drugdealer..

And Craftsman style was everywhere as well, along with the Spanish hacienda style of course. Stucco city. Looks inviting, this neighborhood. Back when one could go on a stroll even later at night and not worry about a thing.
Except for the vintage cars, a lot of streets in Southern California still look exactly like this. Check out Riverside south of downtown (magnolia ave).
And that’s kinda like what it was like. Unfortunately, there are so few who will remember wonderful it was. Life was simple, meaningful, and rewarding. Forget it, it’s gone forever.
Every one of these videos has this predictable comment. It's like this NOW. A drive through a placid suburb? Come on. I did a drive just like this three days ago. If your life lacks both reward and meaning because there's a couple more cars parked on the street than in 1940, that's on you, bub.
See that truck turning, at 1:30? I found the exact location on Google Maps; it appears to be where N Avon St intersects with N Lima St. Interesting thing is that it all essentially looks just as nice today as it had in the 1940s - only with a few small exceptions: any and all major changes made to this neighborhood (renovations, plus chainlink fences added in some places) must have been made something like 40 years ago. Aside from the period vehicles, this all looks just like plenty of neighborhood do at present.
This is amazing! In color at 60 FPS it's like someone went back in a time machine and recorded it with a smartphone 😱 I wish they recorded more of these in the 1940s I would watch hours of it
From the time when America was a Great, Proud , Hard Working nation. I was fortunate enough to born in the mid 50's & enjoy some of the greatness of our country. Not so much any more.
"...shot a month ago!" well, not really. Look again at the sky in this film clip. Today, the air is much cleaner. Remember, most houses came with an incinerator in our back yards and we burned the trash almost everyday causing that infamous brown haze...

Yeah, I grew up in Los Gatos in the 60,s. There were still pockets of orchards around. Remember the Frontier Village amusment park in San Jose? I left in 1975 when I joined the Navy and went back to look around about 20 yrs ago. It had totally changed into a suburban nightmare. Cant imagine what it looks like now.
I can almost imagine myself with an almost perfect grasp of how it was like walking those streets. Almost like today but with different a car shape and different current event.
It surprises me how many cars and houses with a garage for a car there were in the 1940-s. Here in the Netherlands there were 8 privately owned cars in every 1000 people in 1948.
Europe was, and still IS today, much backwards compared to USA. Today the situation is even worst, we are in totally dramatic regression... Europe is becoming a s#!th0le
Jeroen- Good observation! However this film is suburban southern California. Footage taken at the same time in the Eastern US , (New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey) would reveal much fewer cars per-capita. Not on a scale of the Netherlands, but nothing like Southern California!

OMG! Both my grandparents lived next door to each other on Avon, just north of Magnolia from the 30's thru the 70's. My dad literally married the girl next door. This looks almost exactly like I remember the neighborhood in the 60's, except for the 40's era cars. I remember walking with my grandparents down to Magnolia for ice cream in the evening. Thanks for the memories!

I used to live a block away from there, one block over other side of Magnolia! The camera truck goes south on California, turns right on Clark, then left on Lima, then right on Verdugo. Must have been before the California theater was built in 1949(?) since it's not in the film.

I was born in 45 and remember our large house in Burbank, it had a small house in the back for the House-Keeper and a stable for two horses. My father was just a manager, not rich and I remember the Helm's truck and the smell of the baked goods as he opened up the drawers.

Dad was a manager (Foreign concept today I know) of men who came home from the horrors of war on a global scale (the commenter’s father) , and worked very hard to earn a living and provide for their families. California was THE place to be at that time. Lots of these houses have a second smaller apartment on the property...not uncommon at all

This was back when kids were able to be raised by a parent, many people were craftsmen, and so they either built and/or maintained things, and took care of them, many people were not on the welfare system, so whatever people owned, they wanted to maintain, because nothing was "free" in life, and people that we now call "homeless", actually have mental disorders. Back then, there were a lot more institutions where they were housed, where doctors would try to treat them/medicate them, which sounds horrible, until you realize that the modern alternative has them try to live on their own, homeless, in-and-out of jail.
...and the most important thing of all, the only "hard" drugs that were tolerated at all, were tobacco products, and alcohol. There really was almost nothing else to use and abuse, to screw with a person's mind.

What was the purpose of the film footage being shot in the first place? Movie stock footage, etc? Love watching them!
I grew up in Southern California. Born not long after this film was shot and, yes, it really did look like that. Might have been filmed mid-day during the week(no children) and either those who worked had already driven to work (few, if any cars driving around) or for the most part the vehicles were in garages. We do see some parked(a ‘47 or 48 Packard, a 46 or 47 Dodge, a 48 Mercury, and a 49 Pontiac). Thank you for posting this, such memories!

@@almeggs3247 It was. I do remember what were called ‘street car buttons’ in a small middle lane in the center of certain boulevards where people waited for the streetcar. The Red Trolley was different, it was operated by Pacific Electric and was in and around Los Angeles.
I also note that there are TV aerials on some houses but they are few and far between.

So pretty, I've been living in Burbank since 2011 and one of the things I love about it is the wide tree lined streets and how clean it is. Residential streets are narrower in LA, Hollywood in particular.

Born in Burbank 1946 - Miller Elementary, Emerson Elementary, John Muir Jr High, Burbank High. A lot of Burbank still looks like this, but much has changed. Lockheed was the main employer in th 40s-70s. Then slowly pulled out. Burbank survived somehow. The one thing I don't miss is the smog. In the 50s and early 60s it was so bad sometimes you couldn't see more than about 100 feet. Smelled terrible and hurt the lungs. Love this footage. Thanks for posting it.
I went to Emerson for a few weeks in 1969 before we moved to Reseda. I remember walking to my grandma's house after school and the smell of carnations at a house along the way.
My Uncle Art Miley was a supervisor at Lockheed into the 1970s, he was revered at Lockheed by the men who were supervised by him. He and my Aunt, my father's sister, lived in Sherman Oaks. Good people. Miss them so much.
All those houses are worth millions now if they are still standing. Burbank is an expensive city to live now.

I live in a 1946 house on Clark ave! This is amazing. Love the grease buckets placed at the curb. Its amazing how little has changed. If this were anywhere else. South valley, west side, Hollywood. Most all of these houses would have been torn down and in their place mini mansions. I love Burbank. Slow to change, and people who live here like the modest mid century vibe, and don’t want it destroyed.
Sometimes I have the crazy idea that someone in the future went back and filmed this, the video quality is amazing!

I Wish the movie studios had spent more time driving around So Calif back in the 30's and 40's filming all the farms, orange groves and open land before it was all lost to development. I hope some day a realistic VR game will be developed to recreate what So Calif looked like back in the day.

My dad's childhood home is in this video. He said the movie studios regularly filmed this area for stock footage, so you're not wrong about it looking like a movie set.
It still looks very similar today you can go visit. It’s the suburbs of LA.

This area looked similar to my neiborhood in Long Beach CA where I lived from 1960 to 1964. I remember this time in California well. I rode my bicycle for miles from home without any fear at all. This was the best time to be a boy growing up.

I'm from Maine & grew up with the television always on. This is exactly the way I've always pictured the revered state of California. I always (still do) watch the background scenes in tv shows that are filmed in southern California. My parents lived there for 2 years in San Diego. My father was in the Navy & worked at the hospital. They loved it. My oldest brother was born in the San Diego Naval hospital. So in my mind California, in general is like a paradise to me. It looks so happy, bright & American. The sun' s always out, my parents told me. So nice! I still have not gotten there to see it, but will. It's my favorite place on the whole planet that I want to see. Thanks for these awesome videos. They're beautiful!

Yes, we do have some areas that have run down over the decades, much homeless in the big cities, and a variety of problems. But, that being said, some areas are still as nice as in this video. We have some gorgeous architecture up through the 1940s, and we do have some of the most beautiful natural areas in the country, IMO! Plus our climate is fantastic! Hope you get to visit someday! :)

Most people didn't actually own cars, if they did, they had one, and it was much smaller and could fit in the garage. A modern card wouldn't fit down the driveway into the garage in the back. I know b/c I live in one of these houses. A mini might make it...

And ground antennas (both indoor and outdoor) just simply don't receive well enough if you live in a dead zone. I speak from experience. I have never had cable TV in my life while living alone. Nor will I ever! If my on-air TV has nothing good on at the moment, I watch RUclips over my cellular internet, with help from my #WeBoost "Eqo" cell signal booster. Unfortunately, where I live, I can only mount it on the ground. But it still helps! I quit CoNcast home internet in 2015, never to return!

He writes about what a dirty, nasty city LA is, with thugs and cheats and scoundrels seemingly hiding in every alley and around every corner. Of course, it was fiction. But romanticizing the past is a dangerous road to go down. People have been doing it for millennia, but in general, most things have gotten better, not worse.

Dutch Elm Disease was heading west and about to hit Detroit. California still had a few more years, but the day was fast approaching when it would lose these trees. Nice video, love the vintage vehicles and white picket fences.

I was born in Glendale in 1948 and lived in Burbank, east of Glenoaks in the 70's. My Mom lived in Glendale then Burbank until she passed about 5 years ago. I know the city pretty well but don't recognize any of these streets. Anyone know where this is? Would be cool to compare then and now using Street View.

No its not Sun Valley, it is at the start of the film, on California st facing North toward Magnolia Ave (the Magnolia Theater was on the left corner) traveling south to the next street Clark Ave. (I lived at 2610 Clark Ave, a few shortblocks to the left.) turning right the vacant lot is Verdugo Park now and the swimming pool at the end of the block. Over one block on Clark Ave then left on Lima st. Avon st and the alley turn converge into Lima. Turn right on Verdugo Ave. Next right is Whitnall Highway. End.
So as it turns out Burbank looks different after all.
You know the big green dome on Hollywood Way by the Air port..? That dome is right on top of the exact spot my family's home was at. I lived there till 7th grade, then we moved to 2610 Clark Ave. LOL.. LOL Burbank looks way different. Good or bad I think it's all in the eye of the beholder.
What I learned is I should read the comments, I actually thought I was the one who ID where the streets were. I am not sure about the autos I am glad to know. I am 73 now. You know you younger people are not wrong it probably does look the same.

FWIW, Burbank is still one of the tidiest cities I have ever lived in. Most of the residential streets (I live on one) are still just as nice.
Actually, littering was far more of a problem in the 1940s than it is today. So big of a problem that in 1956 they finally launched anti-littering PSAs. While tossing garbage onto the sidewalks and public parks is taboo now, it wasn't back then. I've spent most of my adult life living in Europe where litter on the streets is commonplace in places like Italy and Greece precisely because the generations didn't grow up with the same conditioning.

This is the post war years after WWII. It seems like the tail end of the 40s or beginning of the 50s. My dad tells me about similar areas like this where he grew up in ELA from the 30s to early 60s, before it became predominantly hispanic. One area was known as Lan Franco in the late 30s to early or mid 40s, and another El Sereno sometime in the 40s. It was absolutely nothing like it is today and since the early 60s when it started going to the dogs. It was multicultural but in a good way, and everyone was proud to be American, kept up their small homes and front lawns, and worked very hard. Those places are slums and very dangerous at night. Sad to see how hardly anything changes for the better, always for the worst. But I've been to some neighborhoods that still look like this today! There are a few in Paso Robles and at least one or more in San Dimas. Amazing little towns with original homes in clean, safe neighborhoods. SoCal is not all bad but it's unfortunately rare to find nice, clean neighborhoods with old homes like the ones shown in this video.
South Pasadena, Glendora, La Verne, Upland…. There’s actually quite a few smaller cities that are still pretty close to the original state.
The route from El Sereno into Alhambra must’ve been gorgeous! A lot of those areas are still beautiful but unfortunately they’ve seen better days.
I'm a former Burbank resident and still live just a stone's throw away. I'd wager that most of the unassuming little houses you see in this clip are still standing. Of course now, they sell for 4-5 times what they would in other parts of the country.

I lived over on Keystone St. Between Alameda Ave and Oak St.
The house was built in June of 1941. My mom and dad bought it that month for approximately $5,000.
Over the next 58 years they added a bdrm, den .5 bath and remodeled the kitchen. After my parents passed away, we sold it for $320,000 in 1999.
Last September (2020), it was sold for $1,005,000.
That's right. An 80 year old house with NO POOL sold for over $1,000,000. JEEEZ!
@@spiff8862 i would love to move there and own a house. I worked my whole life i'm single, and now in 55 and lucky to afford a crap apartment. Never could afford a car ever so i'm stuck alone in a crap place. And now they tearing up everything to build $2000 a month apartments i can barely afford a $600 one. I been working my whole life for nothing to live like crap. And prices go up everyday and make it worse.. I have no idea how people can live like that unless you are a moviestar or drugdealer..

And Craftsman style was everywhere as well, along with the Spanish hacienda style of course. Stucco city. Looks inviting, this neighborhood. Back when one could go on a stroll even later at night and not worry about a thing.

Except for the vintage cars, a lot of streets in Southern California still look exactly like this. Check out Riverside south of downtown (magnolia ave).
This neighborhood still looks like this today lol you can go visit. I lived in a 1928 Spanish bungalow for years.

Every one of these videos has this predictable comment. It's like this NOW. A drive through a placid suburb? Come on. I did a drive just like this three days ago. If your life lacks both reward and meaning because there's a couple more cars parked on the street than in 1940, that's on you, bub.

See that truck turning, at 1:30? I found the exact location on Google Maps; it appears to be where N Avon St intersects with N Lima St. Interesting thing is that it all essentially looks just as nice today as it had in the 1940s - only with a few small exceptions: any and all major changes made to this neighborhood (renovations, plus chainlink fences added in some places) must have been made something like 40 years ago. Aside from the period vehicles, this all looks just like plenty of neighborhood do at present.

From the time when America was a Great, Proud , Hard Working nation. I was fortunate enough to born in the mid 50's & enjoy some of the greatness of our country. Not so much any more.

Yes, as early as the '40s people were starting to notice air pollution in LA.
Having lived in this neighborhood for almost 40 years I love seeing what it looked like 80 years ago! Thanks for posting and bringing it to life with color.

Yeah, I grew up in Los Gatos in the 60,s. There were still pockets of orchards around. Remember the Frontier Village amusment park in San Jose? I left in 1975 when I joined the Navy and went back to look around about 20 yrs ago. It had totally changed into a suburban nightmare. Cant imagine what it looks like now.
I can almost imagine myself with an almost perfect grasp of how it was like walking those streets. Almost like today but with different a car shape and different current event.

It surprises me how many cars and houses with a garage for a car there were in the 1940-s. Here in the Netherlands there were 8 privately owned cars in every 1000 people in 1948.
Europe was, and still IS today, much backwards compared to USA. Today the situation is even worst, we are in totally dramatic regression... Europe is becoming a s#!th0le
Jeroen- Good observation! However this film is suburban southern California. Footage taken at the same time in the Eastern US , (New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey) would reveal much fewer cars per-capita. Not on a scale of the Netherlands, but nothing like Southern California!

Yo me crie en Burbank...era muy bonito...el clima, los jardines, las escuelas.. la jente era muy amable...aqui filmaban muchas peliculas y shows...otros tiempos.
