Would you guys please just thank Meagan on behalf of the skating fans for not holding back on commenting the judging system? I am so grateful for it! Thank You Meagan! And also great content, as always :)
@@slodembouz7694 You are an idiot. There is NOTHING that suggests this. Russian arrogance was met with fair perspective. Shame on you for this ignorant and clearly biased comment. YOU are the 'phobic' person here. The rest of us are here for sport. Go support your drug cheats and leave the rest of us alone.
Meagan is such an interesting and nice personality :) It’s always so interesting to hear about competitions from athlete’s perspective. And I love that she is “Figure skating fan” and really enjoys skating and follows other teams. Please invite her again since now she can tell everything she wants to! :)
I always liked Meagan, but the past year or so has honestly made me a fan. As for Sui's jumps- to be fair, she's landed the 3s quite well up to the olympics. She got a cut on her leg and got 12 stitches, hence why they withdrew from 4cc and their practice schedule was thrown off. Also heard she had periostitis... girl just can't catch a break.
Her percentages in competition over her career haven't been great on the salchow. She has certainly landed some good ones, but it has been a bug bear for her.
Totally agree with Meagan that 20 pairs should qualify to the long program. The discipline has gotten so much deeper since the last Olympics. I know they don't want to have to add another ice resurface, but it's ridiculous that good teams don't get to compete the long program they've prepared. It would be like sending a gymnast home before her last two events.
Meagan was fair and accurate when speaking about her fellow competitors. I'm impressed she could handle such a busy schedule and even have time to observe practices of other skaters. I liked her comment about how they kept doing SBS 3Lz in the beginning of their career despite not landing them because they knew in the long run it would help them stand out. And her comments about throw technique were interesting-- the technique used where the girl mostly does her own jump and is assisted by the guy may make a throw easier, which is why many pairs do it this way, but it tends to make the throw smaller and less impressive than the teams where the guy is really THROWING the girl, instead of it being an assisted jump. Great interview with Meagan.
Love Meagan's clear and precise analyses. Sui/Han in their interviews with Chinese media revealed that Sui had an inflammation on one of her foot close to the Olympics and she was experience strong pain on the day of the Long program. They even considered pulling a Shen 2003 and injecting some numbing agents into her lower leg but eventually decided against it. That's also why Sui shed tears after the clean short (because she had doubts she would be able to do that).
This was amazing stuff....just loved hearing all of it. Interesting that the Mc Laren report is an issue with the athletes....Russian officials try telling the public that is all hoax and fake news....I wouldnt trust any officials anyway within a ten foot pole length. Also loved that section about Aljona and Bruno, obviously as I am from Germany 😁
OMG thank you for this. This made my weekend! Meagan is awesome. I'm so happy for her and Eric. Finally! She is such a nice person. So fun. Welcome back Jonathan!! I love how Dave and Meagan are so similar and Jonathan is in the middle bringing the chill. Awesome. So cool to hear about the Olympics and training for figure skating from an insider's perspective. Very interestng stuff.
Can't believe I spent two hours watching this - and loved it! (Felt like being invited to a slumber party :-) Duhamel/Radford joining Savchenko/Massot on the Olympic medal podium was the icing on the cake of a dream come true. Greetings from Germany 😇😈
Interesting to hear about technical things from Meagan’s perspective. She describes her throws as her own jump that is essentially assisted, which is definitely different than the throws of Sui/Han, Savchenko/Massot, Tarasova/Morozov, etc, which are more “true throws” and get big air. Only a few teams in the world really master the art of a throw and make it look like something a lot bigger than an assisted solo jump.
Congratulations Meagan! She is so refreshing. I'm so happy for her. Word of advice for you Meagan: You are an OLYMPIC CHAMPION, now and forever, so introduce yourself as SUCH!!!
Thank you so much for this amazing recap!! This is the best way to spend a Sunday morning! I basically live my life constantly thinking “what would Meagan Duhamel do in this situation?”
So sad that they penalized you for having a correct flip. The edge should be nearly flat. I think it’s hilarious that flutzes are ignored yet correct flips get edge calls.
Yeah, she usually tells the truth, but sometimes is too much. Like she said during the Russian nationals that the girl (ice dancer) is fat. I don't think that such things can be discussed on TV.
Kate Zh it’s a different culture I kind of understand her and love her because my culture is similar. Russian are not politically correct and are super rough around the edges. Tarasova is sucker for artistic skaters Megan is more of an athletic which is fine it’s her own style but Tarasova won’t refrain her opinion!!
I'm blown away by this interview. And I'm so impressed with your and Jonathan's relationship with Meagan. Such a wondrous mix of respect, honesty, constructive and biting criticism, humor, collegiality.
Meagan is so awesome!! I'm living for her clever insights and honesty! Also *tea* You can try to bring her back for ladies recap since she'll be watching that live!
Best video ever! And I was even more happy to see Jonathan than Meagan! My fav moment was when she said something about Michelle’s silver and bronze and both of you were like too soon, too soon! Love you guys!
Regarding how Alexa & Chris knew about the shooting, I read that the TV in the warmup room was for some reason turned to CNN International before their skate and showed footage of the shooting. They didn't use it as an excuse and Alexa said she was focused on her job, but she hoped to create a moment that would uplift the country. So to me, she lost focus a little bit. I think the sudden attention they got after the team event was slightly overwhelming and caused them to lose sight of the fact that they were skating for themselves, not to please the country and all the fans bombarding them with messages. Alexa is now the most followed pair skater on Instagram, and I think that attention was a lot for her to take in overnight. It was interesting when Meagan said she didn't feel like the media in Canada even cared about them. It gives you a sense of the difference between the Olympic attention the US skaters get vs the Canadian skaters. Alexa's nerves didn't affect her on jumps, just about all her jumps were perfect, it was more the throws and even their 3 twist, unfortunate as those as typically big ways they gain an advantage over several teams. If I was reading the same article as Meagan, it didn't say the IOC was thinking of sanctioning them for saying they wanted to honor the victims, it was merely speculation on the author's part because of the IOC's crazy rules. But I don't see how saying you want to honor victims can be construed as a "demonstration or political propaganda". It was a harmless comment on Alexa's part, just a selfless acknowledgement of the tragedy.
I didn't see it as excuse making either. They kept Chris's knee injury so quiet during the fall that Dave didn't even know he had one. Alexa's exact words are that they wanted their skate to be "a tribute to the US's loss". I don't think she should have mentioned it or let her mind wonder to that because I think it might have ultimately affected her, but I think it's common for athletes at the Olympics to feel as if they are skating for something bigger than themselves.
I also read that Alexa was under the weather the night before the free skate (not related to her previous illness) and was up much of the night (and given their practice time, likely had to be awake by 430 or 5AM). She then told Chris that he would have to shoulder more of the load during the skate and later blamed herself for putting that extra pressure on him. I'm just paraphrasing, I don't know the exact quotes, and they're often taken out of context. But if anything was bothering them, I'm going to guess it was that more than the school tragedy thing. I'm sure Alexa knows how to compartmentalize things and was focused on the skating. All she was basically saying is that her heart went out to the victims.
They deserve a lot of credit for how they did in the Team Short Program, especially after Nathan got off to a rocky start. They placed very high and it was one of the best shorts of their career.
I LOVED this interview! Agreed with all of Meagan's thoughts, ESPECIALLY ABOUT THE RUSSIAN PAIR'S AWFUL LONG PROGRAM! I so agree that their program components should have been so much lower. I really appreciate Meagan's thoughtfulness and honesty. I would love to see more videos with her, I feel like I learned a lot here!
This was one of my FAVORITE recaps by far! I love having Meagan's perspective and great questions from the gentlemen! I would also LOVE for Meagan to start a RUclips channel with yoga and workouts. Thanks for the quality videos!!! Your skating fans appreciate it!
I love the honest discussions regarding the judging and the IJS system. There should be more of an open, honest conversation about everything and anything judging and those involved in the decision making in the ISU. It still feels very, very shady. Also, really appreciate the open honest conversations regarding everything from judging to doping. Loved this guys! Thanks Meagan! Also, in regards to the judging scandal at Zagreb... The Russian judge involved in that scandal that wasn't investigated....Maria Abasova who was judge# 2 in the Short Dance tonight. She also gave P/C higher PCS over V/M and she also gave P/C a +3 on their twizzles and a +2 for V/M in their twizzles..... Very questionable considering that was an element that wasn't executed to a high standard for P/C. Just an odd thought and throwing it out there... There should be a mixed zone for the judges.
Jonathan: I’m the type who’s motivated by discouragement. The harsher the criticism, the harder I try. Encouragement honestly just makes me lazy. Maybe encouragement to break the tension is fine, but I know I won’t be my best in a primarily encouraging environment.
Meagan has made a great point on why the Chinese cannot handle their second side-by-side jumps. The throw technique explanation sounds very legitimate. They really have to practice their second side-by-side jumps or just do a 2A instead. I feel a throw quad for the Chinese (especially for Sui/Han) will be easier than the side-by-side 3S.
I’d say several of the pairs in the field have an easier time rotating one SBS triple than another (Zabijako/Enbert, etc), it’s not just the Chinese pairs. There has been a push in recent years to stop doing safe 2A and instead take a risk and do another triple. The Chinese rely on those huge throws to help them stand out and make up for SBS issues. They were having issues rotating both jumping passes here not just the one unfortunately.
For better or worse (probably better), this could have been 3 hours if you hadn't cut her off so much. She was willing to give you a gift with purchase of extra editorial comments after answering a question. This is a woman with a lot on her mind and willing to share it. Take the opportunity to tap into it.
Well in discussing Patrick Chan people need to remember Chan came third in the short and first in the long - he didn't skate well for him but he did better than Team Canada thought.
Yeah he did but if he had not given up on his training, he could have been way better. There was nothing that the guys on the podium did that he was not capable of maybe aside from Yuzurus quad loop
@@janvdb9258 I almost want to cry because if he had not lost his motivation who knows. It is sad the judging system doesn't recognize his fine actual skating. It is significantly better than Yuzuru and Nathan. But the system doesn't recognize it really. I am sorry I know there are huge Hanyu and Chen fans but they should be scoring say 5 or more pts behind Chan on pcs. Maybe hanyu should be generally speaking 5.5 pts behind and Chen 11pts behind. They still might win because the jumps are worth so much.
I am a huge Chan fan, but he made some weird decisions. Kristy Krall really helped Patrick improve his jumping enabling him to learn the quad toe loop. I even think at one point he was attempting quad salchows. Then he left her and only had Kathy Johnson who is/was not a figure skating coach. Like why?!? Had Patrick stayed with Kristy and learned to do more quad jumps and do them dependably he would have won gold in Sochi. I remember I was at work but following the men's long program and learned that Hanyu had not skated cleanly so assumed Patrick would win gold. I was shocked that Patrick had every chance to win, but failed. A shame because in my mind Patrick in 2011-2 was the greatest men's figure skater I have ever seen. To this day I still believe that because he combined technical and artistic ability equally well. Hanyu has never satisfied me. His style is too feminine and over the top: excessive head, arm, body, and leg movements like he is having a seizure. Was extremely glad he was crushed by Nathan at Beijing. Gave me great pleasure to see him fail in such a major way.
Loved this interview, all the behind the scenes info, and Meagan's refreshingly honest remarks. Congrats to her and Eric on their bronze and gold medals!
Jonathan's reaction to a Marie France podium sweep is me. Honestly I probably won't enjoy the Ice Dance as much as I'll want to because I'll be such an emotional wreck over Hubbell and Donohue. Loved all of Meagan's insights!
im disappointed that so many good Canadian skaters are retiring this year...on top of that, many of them won't go to Worlds which means we won't have those spots for next year...
a TV in the warmup room was covering the school shooting right before the pairs LP, so it was fresh in Alexa's brain. I think what she was saying is that no matter how they felt about the skate, it was nothing compared to people at home mourning the loss of all those kids that day, and she hoped their skate could be a tribute to the victims. I don't think the comments crossed the line in any way, she was just acknowledging the tragedy at home while they were in the Olympic bubble having fun. I think Alexa became very aware of just how many people were watching her in the Olympics after the team event, where they did quite well, and then she put pressure on herself to try to create another "moment". But you can't try to force a "moment", you have to just let it happen naturally. It's cliche to call things a good learning experience, but I really think this was for them.
Meagan must be happy she doesn't have to deal with the draconian doping police anymore. It's sad that doping is so prevalent that athletes are treated like criminals until they pee the correct way! Please have her back, love her detailed answers.
She's really awesome. Love the frankness over the bullshit of the details of the IJS system. Anyone who follows pairs knows that the side-by-side jumps, throws, and triple and quad twists are more difficult than that the lifts, which are more highly valued under the current system. A triple lutz is far more difficult than a triple toe. The current system makes no sense.
The difference of throw jump tech is interesting. Chinese tech is truly throwing. It's more watchable but more dangerous. D/R's tech has more safety and chance to landing throw quads.
Maybe it's more dangerous for throw quads, but I don't see anything dangerous about Chinese throws. They are big and beautiful, and as you said, true throws. That should be the aim more than an "assisted jump" as Meagan described.
I have also been wondering why the quads aren't as valuable in pair skating compared to singles. Should get a little bit more for quad twist and quad throw in my opinion.
Watching this after 2022 olympics drama and gosh has it been a long same old road seemingly with no light ahead. Will the situation ever change for the better and will the game become more fair? :/
Meaghan: Hmmm...I don’t think I ever thought of that. Wait- what?! This woman has an answer for EVERYTHING. Maybe she can give some answers to Karen Chen instead all this blade issue mumbo jumbo.😐👈🏻 LOVE YOU, Jonathan. So polite and amazed at Dave and Meaghan taking ten thousand steps together. 😂
Such a good video, one of your very best! As wonderful as Meagan was, it’s even better to see Jonathan back. I hope you’ve been able to find some joy and solace in skating this past week or so. And nice work correctly predicting the men’s podium!
Italian here :) Nicole della Monica/Matteo Guarise said they will continue competing. Valentina and Ondrej haven't said, but it seems unlikely they will continue after Worlds.
OH MY GOD, I love Meagan. This is my favourite TSL Video ever. BUT,...my favourite moment in this video is the 'lean in' Jonathan gives to the camera when Meagan says she's been invited to North Korea. Cue the cartoon sound effects!!!! LOL
Thank you guys for inviting Meagan , she is so cool ^^ for information, wenjing SUI has got periostitis just before the Olympics and she felt very painful described by her the pain is like 7 out of 10 even during the days of competition , they thought even that she had a fracture before the MRI in Beijing. So lucky and unlucky for them at same time . here is a link where they were interviewed talking about this : ruclips.net/video/RJlJA6vUCEo/видео.html
Bahhahahahhahahah 36:50 Meagan's talking about the bubble of Pyeongchang and in my mind I'm like "Trump is STILL president"... And then Dave says exactly that. #IWannaMoveToCanadaPlease
MEAGAN!!! I would love to see you keep skating to the next Olympic cycle, with Eric! You are hey-lea-riousss, TSL should pay you to stay as a contract guest lololol.I red an interview report from ISU saying Sui/Han chose Turandot the classic and chanllenging program to pay tribute to their coach skated couple years ago, despite objections from Zhoa and Lori the choreographer who advised the young pair with rather modern ones. Sui even studied through the entire novel book to figure out who the Princess Turandot is (eccentric and irritable), which partly explains why she looked so fierce and pissed during the program...TBH their FS' artistry was to die for, it felt to me I was watching a 5min condensed opera, powerful and full of emotions, BUT Sui/Han eventually failed since music is too heavy and intense, what a dangerous choice considering the pressure built up to skate last round in the Olympic ice rink, especially compared to Aljona and Massot's soothe-you-down soundtrack music... Truly a pity of lifetime for S/H.
me as well, literally every time he started to say something, someone would interrupt him. then he would say to them, "no go ahead", and after they finished speaking no one even bother to listen to what he had to say. I noticed this in other videos as well

Oh, I meant just this season, just realized i didn't specify. Yeah, obviously, I still get nervous as heck whenever she goes into that jump.
I hope they remove the salchow and perhaps it's better to do a different jump, maybe a double axel and reply on the PCS or a 3F

It would have been amazing to see Meagan compete in the pairs & singles at the Olympics!
Canada has so many talented skaters, that's a perfect healthy mechanism giving more opportunities to the youngsters :)
Wow loooove Megan! You need to hire her! 💙💜🧡
I loved turandot!
a TV in the warmup room was covering the school shooting right before the pairs LP, so it was fresh in Alexa's brain.
This was just so much fun! Thanks so very much!
Meagan must be happy she doesn't have to deal with the draconian doping police anymore. It's sad that doping is so prevalent that athletes are treated like criminals until they pee the correct way! Please have her back, love her detailed answers.
OMG I love Meagan I need her to be on more recaps. I learned so much. Loved her honesty and her insight.

WHAT EVERYONE IS HERE FOR! THANKS 😂😘
Im watching this again. Meagan is amazing!!! I hope her future is bright off the ice.
Oh my god MORE MEAGAN!!!! This interview/segment was ON. Thank you!
This was EVERYTHING and more!
Regular guest from now on, right? Loved it!
LOVE HER
The Chinese's throw technique has changed. Don't know why. Shen/Zhao used the waist+wrist technique.
To be sitting in her athlete's room at the Olympics and taking a time off to talk with you guys. Meagan, you're friggen awesome.
Maybe she can give some answers to Karen Chen instead all this blade issue mumbo jumbo.😐👈🏻
LOVE YOU, Jonathan. So polite and amazed at Dave and Meaghan taking ten thousand steps together. 😂
Best tsl ever! Bring back Jillian for the rest of the events
wow that was amazing. thank you.
Anche Carolina potrebbe continuare.
Yes, my favourite pair is on the way to Beijing: della Monica / Guarise - Pechino 2022! 💖 💪
Greetings from Germany
I need Meagan and Michelle's yoga for figure skaters.
Did Meagan say she will be coaching the north korean team?
Marina Koo She did. She has been working with them at the Olympics now that the pair event has concluded.
I was mad when I saw "2hrs" on this video then I was glad when I saw "Meagan Duhamel" on the title.
Very interesting to invite Meagan as special guest, love her personality and her attitude towards this sports, stay cool:)
This is amazing! One of he best This and That ever! Please, bring her back! I learnt so much!!
This is all that I care about.
Elton John hahaha.
Great recap, thanks !
who are they referring to, Elton John, curious?
Nina Mozer !
Bahhahahahhahahah 36:50 Meagan's talking about the bubble of Pyeongchang and in my mind I'm like "Trump is STILL president"... And then Dave says exactly that.
#IWannaMoveToCanadaPlease
This was MARVELLOUS
absolutely love this ; so informative
this was awesome!
What is the documentary on Eteri’s rink that Dave mentions at 1:00:56? Thanks!
ceriseskates also wondering this!!
Loved every second of this. Thank-you, Meagan!
It's wild this was only 2 years ago
I hear Sui is injured. Poor thing.
Wow, this interview was everything! Thank you Meagan for your insight into the skating world!
An idea for future: get Megan Duhamel and Max Trankov at the same time for pain skating discurssions. It would be fire
He criticized her skating- she said he’s a miserable person who hates life
I know ;) it adds some fire. They both have a vision of pair skating, but extremly different - it's interesting to listen to both of them.
I’d love it if there was 2+ hours of honest commentary with Meagan for all the disciplines
Guuuy please please please make a podcast. There’s no worthy video content and audio would be so more convenient to listen to
Plus, would u please let Jonathan speak? I start to feel really bad for him.
me as well, literally every time he started to say something, someone would interrupt him. then he would say to them, "no go ahead", and after they finished speaking no one even bother to listen to what he had to say. I noticed this in other videos as well
Phenomenal!
