- History of Boxing recaps Roy Jones's fight against Antonio Tarver. It was a legendary fight.
For years, Roy Jones Jr. dominated professional boxing, moving up weight classes and claiming titles along the way. Despite dreams of heavyweight bouts with legends like Tyson and Holyfield, negotiations fell through, and Jones returned to light heavyweight. There, Antonio Tarver awaited, eager to challenge Jones' defense.

Thanks bro
Why would anyone sub to this when you can't even spell nightmare right!! What a joke!
This was a TRULY shocking moment in boxing! Roy had just won the WBA Heavyweight title and won a somewhat controversial decision over Tarver. But seeing Roy get KO'd and then in the very next fight KO'd and actually worse! I have never seen a fighter become shot in the span of just one fight. Roy was truly the best of his generation and probably should have stayed at Heavyweight and then retire. Way too many loses on his record that really dont mean anything. He was long past his amazing prime.
I think Jones was shot when he entered the ring in the first Tarver fight. His reflexes and legs weren’t the same. Burning off all that muscle messed up his body. If he stayed at HW he would have had a couple good years left, with little decline. His decline was shocking, sad and also sort of strange. We know the alleged reason, but there was still something odd about it.
Tarver was 22-1 and held 4 belts please
@@nycitylifeandhistory nobody called tarver a bum. But he was not better than Roy before going up to hw and coming back down. Anyone with eyes can see Roy wasn’t the same he was before going up an coming back down. Not taking anything from tarver, but it was a reason he never beat Roy before, they grew up fighting their whole lives.
@@DavidJohnson-ev9xstarver was a beast and a big guy! My cousin fought him on hbo Shelby gross from Camden SC
@@tommyh5 definitely I would never take anything from tarver.
Dropping back from heavyweight was the true hidden nemesis for captain hooks demise. What an amazing fighter he was, though.
1000%
but it was the best time in boxing
@@mahachtv5316 I agree! RJJ was great.
no it wasnt yall can live that dam lie until yall die after that first fight your body adjust back to normal that dont hurt u for life stop the dam cap thats all yall fake roy fans gonna remember is that dam weight cut like this man wasnt ever gonna lose if not for that weight cut get out of here and take da caps with you
@@DeionHarrisyou can literally lose muscle mass and hydration from cutting that amount of weight bro what
You normally don't see guys move up, then move back down, especially if they put on lean muscle mass.
well when they had the second fight everything was normal and back in place so lets stop harping on that roy could never fight all he was was athletic and fast that man couldnt box or fight and tarver proved it roy didnt scare nobody but bums if u could fight roy couldnt do nothing with u but tap tap run speed speed run thats all he did and thats why his fights with bernard and toney and them was boring because he was too fast for them and they was too slow for him and thats all he did was beat people with speed and then he started to get caught when those reflexes started to leave he was getting caught and i knew that was gonna happen because roy had no jab no jab at all he was so stuck on his speed and reflexes he didnt need one but i knew when his ass slowed down a tick they was gonna beat his ass and it wasnt about no weight cut that was over and done after the first tarver fight but people live in excuses thats all they do and its a old quote it says if you love something you make excuses for it and there it is
@@DeionHarris ROFL you have me dying your premise is like saying all Shaq could do was dunk, but nobody could stop it. Then you said all he did was fight bums but mentioned two of the greatest fighters of all in time in Toney and Hopkins, I would not consider Mike McCallum, Felix Trinidad, Virgil Hill as bums either. Facts are you never see fighters move up put on lean muscle mass then come back down. Now you can add that to slide that was already happening he was trying to rap (badly) play basketball, do all these other things like Adrien Broner. Now I will admit it's some guys I would have like to see him fight, but you know how Don king, and bob arum rolled to fight my fighters, you have to sign with me, which Roy did not want to do at the time. So, Gerald Mccellan, Nigel Benn, Julian Jackson would have loved to see those fights.

I picked up the sarcasm haha
thats good cause he laid it on pretty thick
There wasn't a myth. Dropping 35 lbs of muscle to drop back th LHW depleted Roy's body. Period. Had that not happened Tarver would've got a whoopin
Perfect on the money ,You are not just a fan, you understand the science.
Didn't RJJ weigh < 200lbs (somewhere around 195) in that John Ruiz fight at HW?
Even if he cut to 175, I don't think the cut forced him to lose that much muscle, much less 35lbs.
He did say he had to lose 25lbs in preparation for that Tarver fight (6:27) and weight cutting wasn't as advanced back then so maybe RJJ's lack of experience in actual weight cutting made things tough for him
Cutting weight is apart of the game. Nobody forced him to take the fight. The real problem was RJJs speed and athleticism dropped off drastically bcuz his steroids didn’t work anymore. So he got KTFO 😂
@@poindextertunes Steroids don’t help with fast twitch muscle and reflexes genius. They would only slow him down more.
193 lbs when he fought Ruiz
You literally just made up a number, and are saying that's there's not a myth, the irony lol
Prime Roy makes Tarver look like a bar room fighter
I agree . He would’ve destroyed Tarver in his prime definitely before that weight and muscle loss after he moved up to heavyweight. He beat a lot better easy than Tarver.
I agree . He would’ve destroyed Tarver in his prime definitely before that weight and muscle loss after he moved up to heavyweight. He beat a lot better easy than Tarver. Particularly Bernard Hopkins and James Toney.
What at 154, 160....
@@robd5254 168 or 175
@@robd5254 Would be the same . Tarver would’ve been way too slow for prime Roy Jones . The version that lost to Tarver, had some flashes of speed that were phenomenal. Young Roy would not have tired and overwhelmed Tarver . He probably would’ve stopped him . Especially at 160 .
No, the hell he did not. Going up and down in weight mowing down champs did that to Roy. Roy was basically like 55-0. He lost one fight to a DQ in nearly 60 fights. Hardly anyone could compare to a prime Roy Jones.
So basically it was time for him to get taken out...no matter how phenomenal a fighter is, time catches up with all of us...but I too believe a prime Roy beats Tarver
@@SONOFPEARL315 no it was not. he was still in his prime agewise. your body can't take gaining and losing weight that way. nobody would even chance their career doing that today. he barely beat Tarver the first time. he did not look the same then either. his speed was completely gone. Tarver was a C class boxer at best.
@@JohnEastmanExAttyAtLaw u just said it...his speed was gone, why? Because as u get older your reflexes get slower...just because he was in his prime age wise means nothing because he literally had been fighting since before he was a teen as an amateur so his body was definitely past prime from the punches, the training etc...TIME CATCHES UP WITH ALL OF US...
If he retires after he beat Tarver, he can say he is rhe GOAT 🐐. He still is the beat I ever saw.
Pacquiao fell victim to the same thing as Roy
They had a rival that sat & studied them.
Just stayed too long & a guy whose whole life was focused on beating them
Both lost the same way.
Had ro wait until they were diminished to beat them
@@SONOFPEARL315 dude...he was nowhere near retiring age. he was in his early 30s still. most boxers don't retire until 40.
Roy Jones’ boxing style was not sustainable. It was effective because he was in supreme shape. But it was quite inefficient in terms of energy expenditure. When he slowed down a bit, his weaknesses were exposed.
Right on the money 💰
100% even the steroids couldn’t save him. Roy was chinny as well
ABSOLUTELY AGREE, great observation and I always thought the same thing about Jones - He was a great champion; incredibly fast and agile, with great power but it was only a matter of time before his speed would decline over time just enough to have someone like a Tarver expose his extremely flawed boxing style which lacked many basic fundamentals.- In addition he had a weak chin. Now Bernard Hopkins on the other hand was a master boxer and it showed in his later bout with Tarver - He made Tarver look like a rank amateur.
athleticism always has this trajectory lol
The weight drop is what caused the weaknesses, friend.
The bout between Roy Jones Jr. and Antonio Tarver was an epic clash of two great boxers. This fight marked a pivotal moment in their careers, with Jones showcasing his unique technique and Tarver demonstrating remarkable endurance and character. Boxing lacks such fights nowadays.
when was Tarver ever great? this man was a C class fighter at best.
Tarver was C class! He was just lucky to fight a fading Roy who had no answers to his aggressiveness. Imagine how Hopkins demolished him with embarrassing ease
I heard Roy was forced to sell the bout

Roy got this fight late in his Career, this is the fight most champions get early , their wasn't anymore to match him early!
Lmao 🤣 the way Roy was looking in the thumb nail was like he was thinking "Damn, did i remember to cut the oven off." 😂😂😂
This one still hard to swallow just like Tyson and Douglas
A lot of excuse makers for Roy in these comments. Tarver was just too much for Roy. Roy had a great career but as soon as he lost his legs he came a punching bag.
The excuses are wild. Especially for a guy that got popped for PEDs. How come he gets a pass? 🤔
You also made an excuse for Roy in your last sentence. How ironic.
No one, absolutely nobody can defeat time. Not even the great Roy Jones Jr. -who HAD the most amazing reflexes, hand speed ... a talent that is one in a million in the world of boxing. But when all of that slows down, and even his punching power ... and once you tasted a knockdown then it is all down hill from there. Sadly. I choose to remember Roy Jones Jr. as one of the greatest, if not THE greates of all time when he was in his prime. Definitely the most entertaining. He invented the Matrix that we see in Loma today. The showmanship that Prince Naseem tried to copy. Now all there is left is to avenge Mike Tyson against Jake Paul ... or please don't!!!
That's cause he drop weight after gaining it . Jones is still my goat in boxing history.
GOAT of taking that juice 💉
What's funny is most of us thought that he was going to stay at heavyweight to fight Mike Tyson. They did that BS exhibition when they knew they missed that opportunity years before. Because we saw Tarver knock him out we can only surmise what Mike Tyson might have done to him. No matter who you thought would have won that was a dream fight at that time.
These two men, knew each other from youth, before they became pro , they were on the US boxing team. THEY FOUGHT AS EACH OTHER BEFORE, WHEN THEY WERE YOUTH.
Tarver was full of himself before and even more so after this fight, he then went straight on to fight Hopkins who completely outclassed him for 12 rounds and made him look average...that's hubris for you.
You are a little off here, Tarver 'ironically' lost to Bernard Hopkins the same way that his rival Roy Jones lost to him. He bulked up to portray Mason Dixon in Rocky Balboa and then he had to drop 15+lbs in order to fight Hopkins which meant he went into the fight incredibly depleted and therefore got the whooping of a life time. If anything it shows the greatness of Roy Jones since he was able to go Toe to Toe with tarver in the first fight when he was fresh off of the weight drain whereas Tarver lost his weight drain fight.
@@JaceRivera-t2wAn L is an L. Nothing “great” about that. Quit with the excuses.
A movie role ain’t the same as a championship fight, super obvious, ain’t it?
Nah, Roy beat Tarver first fight, he was the fastest most accurate and kept busy. Tarver thought acting like he won the fight after the bell sounded didn’t work.

Cutting weight is was hurt his career
cutting weight hurts all boxer they lose everything power endurance less water in head to absorb punches its a down hill fight from the start
Some boxers could never really recover after a lost.
Roy should have retired after Ruiz, or at least took a break to allow his body to get back to it's natural state.
But man, he could still fire that leather though 😂 You forget how fast his hands were sometimes, then you watch, and listen, to a video.
He did not shatter anything - Roy was the best boxer in the world for a decade - Antonio tarvers whole legacy is built on him beating roy they not the same
I always said he should have retired after the heavyweight fight with ruiz
Some of the greatest fighters lose but I knew it was over for Roy when he lost to dude in Australia in the 2nd rd....
What language is Jones speaking at 0:17?
Yep i thought that was the same guy from the movie Balboa.
I LOVE ROY JONES JR
Roy's reflexes were adversely affected from that move up to and down from heavyweight.. I can assure you he never could take a punch but his reflexes kept him from ever getting punched cleanly.. it was inevitable that he would lose just enough speed to be hit eventually, but that heavyweight stint moved it to the "right now" at that time
naw he slowed down just enough that his style wasn’t working anymore. His style was never sustainable
From 1990 to 2000, Roy was P4P the best fighter the world had ever seen.
I don't understand why people say Roy didn’t see the punch coming-he clearly anticipated it and raised his right hand to block. Unfortunately, the punch landed just slightly in front and clipped him right on the chin. Confidence had always been such a huge part of Roy's fighting style, and once he lost it, he was never the same fighter.
Roy's pride got the best of him. He should have never dropped back down to fight Tarver after moving to Heavyweight. That took a toll on his body, reflexes and speed. He was never the same fighter after that.
People don’t realize that Tarver is actually older then Roy
I gotta question, how much does a polar weigh 🙄
Lets not ask questions like that
None of the commenters here could lose 25 lbs and get out of bed tomorrow morning. Roy Jones Jr paid the price the most weight classes. Champion in his own right.
Tarver caught Jones at the right time. After a miserable weight cut back down from Heavyweight to make this fight.
Roy got shown up as the Mexican Road sweeper he really was by Taver Johnson and a good few others. Never get tired of watching both kos. Enzo Macronelli strarched Royo🥊🇬🇧
to be honest Tarver wasnt an A fighter he just caught Jones at the right time
Exactly as i expected. 10 years later, you speak of Roy Jones, and people STILL say, "One of the greatest of all time!"
Mention that pompous twit, Tarver, and they say "Who?"

Roy in his prime was the quickest puncher ever.
3 years before this fight he knocks out Tarver within 6 rounds on any night.

Roy is the best ever in his prime. Should’ve quit after beating Ruiz
tarvers question was wild mind games
All this talk about Roy Jones going from heavyweight back down to light heavy ruining his career is nonsense. Roy started out as a middleweight and moved up slowly in weight. When he won the heavyweight title, he was really just a pumped up light heavyweight. His natural weight at that time between fights was around 175 pounds. There’s an old saying in boxing that you can watch a fighter get old in the ring overnight. That’s what happened to Roy, one of the best fighters ever who just stayed a little too long. It happens to the best of them.
This Unknown Is Still Unknown,
And He Did Not Beat Rocky Balboa, It Was A Draw, Go Back Watch The Film.
Roy Jones Jr. was in his best years an amazing unique tallented champion who had great athletics, hand-speed, body movement, footwork and good combinations.
That all made him the Best P4P Fighter of the 90's. HOWEVER, Jones Jr. was never Superman as one of his many alias said. Jones Jr. like us all aged and with age, the things that go first is speed, reflexes and movement. Jones Jr.'s syle was ALL built of these factors and when they went off, so was his entire boxing style as well.
Now he was exposed near wide open and ready for the taking. His chin was mediocre at best, his guard was never a thing he had used in the past and with the loss of his speed, much easier to land big hits at. Antonio Tarver, Glen Johnson & Bernard Hopkins was all three older men on paper BUT-BUT they where all three known as late-bloomer tallents in the game compared to early bloomer Roy Jones Jr. and they got better with advanced age. So when they finally got there chanse oif fighhting there long era-rival, they where the ones who would prove longer lasting and Jones Jr. the fader.
Especally Bernard Hopkins, who was 4 YEARS older and came much later into boxing, continued to improve his ring skills and technique at later stage when most other
stagnates. Hopkins was more hungry and had a much tougher time earning his respect and had called-out Roy Jones Jr. for years for a rematch. And in 2010, when both men was at 41-45 of ages, guess who was the older man but boxing wise prooved to be now the better man in the ring? It was Hopkins, who despite never been known as a big hitter, out-punched and out-boxed his long-age rival with the very same scores Jones Jr. defeated him in 1993, when Hopkins was in comparrison a rookie.
When Jones Jr.'s career days as champion forever ended in early 2004, Hopkins was the undisputed MW king till 2005, and then the LH world champion from 2006-2008 followed by 2 more reigns in 2011-2012 and 2013-2014, at near age 50 lost his championship crown !!!!
Tarver wasn't unknown, just didn't get the recognition Roy got.
I always saw that knockout as a bit lucky... (The 2nd fight) and the near knockout in the third was also lucky (wailing with the head down) - Tarver was a good boxer, strong, awkward - But Jones was really shaken by the 2nd fight and for someone who relied on athleticism, while Hopkins (who beat Tarver) fought on smarts.
lucky? he hit em right on the chin bro lmao
Agree, some fights take the fight outta the boxer, Meldrick Taylor comes to mind, Chavez practically ended Taylor’s career.
roy jones is a master in boxing. however, 1 more round in the third fight, Tarver will knock him out. both of them are legend
0:17 what did he say?? 😂😂😂
Tarver tried the rope a dope first fight and lost period but second tine around he learned and the 3rd fight tarver knew how to beat jones .😊😊😊
I remember this, jones was unstoppable before he met the magic man.
How anyone could possible think that Roy ranks anywhere near Mayweather all-time is unfathomable.
I remember watching this fight with my buddy who was a huge RJJ fan and we both put $20 on the fight. His money was on RJJ and mine was on Tarver. When they met at the center of the ring and Tarver said “You got any excuses tonight Roy?” My buddy’s face dropped and I think at that moment he knew his money was gone 😂
Prime Roy is still the most phenomenal thing I've ever seen in a ring.
Time beats us all eventually.
All that weight gain/loss introduced lag into his performance along with simply being older. Tarver was just in the right place at the right time, Roy is all-time talent and I don't see anything exceptional from Tarver that would give him any chance against a prime Roy.
I went to roy vs tarver 3 in tampa, we sat in upper bowl but in the first row...what a waist of money, couldnt see shit still because they looked like little army men sonfar away.
Tarver looks like stickman 😂😂😂😂😂
The old swing,swing,swing hug!
matter of Time before he was worked out.
As you age, you can go up in weight, but you can't come back down again and expect to be the same ... Cat-like reflexes are temporary.
Roy Jones suffered his first loss at 38. The same reason there are no good 38-year-old running backs in the NFL is the same reason Roy started losing. He was a fighter who relied on his speed and explosiveness; those are the first things to go as you age. Roy, in his prime, beats Tarver and all the rest of them Yall must of forgot!
Jones never saw either of those punches coming neither did Tarver....he had his eye's closed both times.
Tarver was a clown who couldn’t compete with prime Roy
Before typing up a tittle for your video like that. Do you know why this happened, how this happened?? Kids and their boxing accounts.
Tarver had a great run after that win. But Jones was the goat.
If this happened today Roy would've been the A side & forced tarver to meet him at a higher weight. I'm not saying that would've made the difference but it would definitely favor Roy
Jones went to far into his career because he hand't lost. This is an example of what happens. But we give credit to Jones Jr who didn't back down from fighting the best.
Roy should have retired after his first bout but arrogance got the best of him
Summarizing: The Roy Jones Jr 's daddy was Antonio Tarv3r"
turns out the man had a glass jaw..............😜😳😄😁😅
In Roy's defense, he was out of his natural weight. He ran out of competition, so he had to take on tougher fights in light-heavies. The same thing happened to Canelo versus Bivol, but Saul has a better chin.
I mean you can't really compare Roy Jones dominated Light Heavyweight and then he had to move to Heavyweight for a challenge, only to come back to light heavyweight where was promptly dominated due to cutting so much muscle. He realistically should have just stepped down to cruiser weight and use his time there to change his style up but you know Ego is one helluva a drug.
sometimes u just gotta knockout a fool twice to gain respect. well done Antonio!
Roy Jones management team let him down! Not many fighters have gone up in weight 2 classes, then returned to their normal weight and found success! Randy Cotoure and Daniel Cormier are the on 2 combat sports athletes who had success doing so. They did over an extended period!
Oh no. Life sometimes its funny Roy Jones jr used to be great kicking ass machine but now he became bump anyone can beat him.
Tarver was such an awkward boxer he gave a lot of boxers a lot of problems not just RJJ who was a classic case of styles make fights

@@misfit2022 yes indeed
That southpaw unorthodox length threw Roy’s timing off. The man clearly beat him twice and the first fight was questionable. Styles make fights and Tarvers style didn’t match well. That's 🧢 Prime RJJ would have boxed circles around Tarver. Magic caught Roy at the right time moving back down 25 pounds. Roy wasn't the same and it was obvious. Best light heavyweight was Archie Moore. I know a lot of people will be mad about this statement but I never had Roy Jones rated in the pound for pound category.
At the time the light heavyweight division was diluted. I will say Mr. Jones had amazing hand speed. I also recognize the importance of him beating Ruiz for the heavyweight strap. Great accomplishment!
Second best Light Heavyweight was Michael Spinks 'we went undisputed in light heavyweight and was the first fighter to go from Lightheavyweight to heavyweight and then win a championship.
If anything Roy Jones was trying to top Michael Spinks by moving back down and
regaining the light heavyweight titles.
