The song “The Diary of Jane” by Breaking Benjamin is about the idea of people who are unidentified and live lives that go unnoticed. The song was inspired by a Jane Doe who washed up on shore and was buried without a story. The song may also refer to the idea of people who are lost and forgotten.
I thought it was about an ex-girlfriend that passed away and he found her diary and read it to see how he affected her life when she was alive...that would make sense with the line "I will try to find my place, in the diary of Jane"
I always thought it was about a suicide victim. He wanted to be a part of her life after the fact as he was reading the diary and finding out the sense of loneliness and the lack of love she felt in her life. His desire to have been a person who could have been there and made her feel loved in hopes that such a thing wouldn't happen. I like the Jane Doe analogy, but it still resonates with me that many suicides feel like an unknown, a stranger. Even from the perspective of the loved ones of someone who commits suicide. it shatters any view of that person you had. They often immediately become a stranger in the most jarring fashion. It makes you question why you weren't good enough for them to feel they belonged and had a place in this world. The desire to see into their view of their life(by looking at their diary) constantly wondering if you even really had a place in it. All the while knowing, due to their choice, that they didn't view you in a manner that made them feel sufficiently loved. Its a heart wrenching experience from the point of view of all involved. Especially the line "as I burn another page, somethings getting in the way". In the mind of a suicide, even if they are loved, there is something in their mind and heart that gets in the way of that love being felt and realized. So the singer,(loved one of the suicide) desires to burn all the pages of loneliness and pain that stand in the way of the loving connection, and find a place in that persons life that is close enough to prevent such a tragedy. There are many ways of interpreting any media, but this one in particular resonated with me.
@matttedford7017 I remember someone telling me something similar to that, and personally I settled with the interpretation that the song was about a Guy who tried to help a Friend, but Depression or Peer Pressure being the ""Something getting in the way"" that drove the friend to Suicide or Fatal Accident. But according to Google what I said above, was just the inspiration for the Song and may not be 100% what the song is about.
@@eriktaylor6272 Exactly they are one of my favorite consistently great bands, but in Home you can FEEL his animosity like you can imaging him talking through clenched teeth just to keep from really letting them know how he feels. Always loved how their songs have the emotional heart just barely contained under the surface and it occasionally breaks through like a lyrical zombie grabbing your ankle when Ben screams and growls
Maaaaan, the amount of serotonin that hit me when I saw you were doing a BB reaction was insane! They’re my absolute favorite band, and almost every one of their songs is a banger. I hope you really enjoy them, I wish I could experience hearing them for the first time again!
lmao WRONG. Breaking Benjamin is cool, but c'mon man, be real. Every group was not trying to be them. Lmao. Even the other bands that have a similar sound, were not doing because "We gotta sound like Breaking Benjamin man!" They just liked the sound and thought they could be successful with it. Breaking Benjamin has had success and shit, but you make it sound like they were headlining stadium tours 😂
Playing halo 2's campaign and hearing breaking benjamins "blow me away" play halfway through a certain mission is definitely a core memory from my early life.
One of the best bands to ever exist!!! The lead singer Benjamin Burnley said in an interview that this song was inspired by watching true crime shows and Jane Doe's who were never known and passed without their story known, he stated this song helped him find closure for not being able to stop someone from suicide. This is what Benjamin stated but there are many different interpretations of it. For me it's about Jane who was treated badly and abused by many and dies at her own choice to get away.
Thanks for your explanation, I am new to this band, being a Vintage Hippie I am mostly into 60’s - 70’s music. You enlightened me, I am digging this band. 😊
This band has not changed their song in all these years. Absolute masterclass. Breath should be your next song. Followed by So Cold. And Dance With The Devil.
I LLOOOOVVVEEEE this song. I added this to my Playlist when it first came out and it's been on there ever since. It hits hard and is easily in the top of my favorite songs i can listen to on repeat.
Ahhh, my favorite band! They are great live and I’ve seen them 7 times. Been a fan since their beginning ❤ Glad you’re finally checking into them; they have many more great songs to explore ❤
Oh man, the Breaking Benjamin rabbithole goes deep. I highly recommend checking out some of their other stuff too. "Never Again", "So Cold", "Angels Fall", "Failure", and the Ember trilogy are all excellent. If I have to recommend any over all, it'd definitely be the Ember trilogy ("Red Cold River", "Torn in Two", and "Tourniquet") since it has the most cinemetography, musical depth, and - as a father - it hits pretty deep with me.
I've got 12 of their songs in my Spotify "Likes" playlist, So Cold is my favorite, probably followed by Polyamorous and Breath. I'm not sure how BP will like the Red Cold River video having two young daughters...
As a family, we decided to go to concerts instead of vacations, since my son was 13. We took him to see them about 6 times with other bands as well. Can't get tired of seeing them live. For 10 years now, the best way to spend time with our son, is music.
@mack98ification Well since we have pets, I didn't want to leave them or have someone else be at my house for that long. We did the vacations when my son was little. He got to go to Europe for 25 days with the school between Junior and Senior year so that covers his vacations until he goes on his own.
My dad shared my first concert experience with me and it was at a musical festival where we went to see Breaking Benjamin specifically! And now we’re gearing up to go to a full on BB concert together
There's a piano version of the song aswell. Has a completely different tone to it as there isn't any of the screams or loud music. And you hear how powerful his voice can be.
So much to say. I've seen BB about 15 times now starting in 2003 and last was this past summer. I have been on stage with them 3 or so times as they often invite kids from the crowd on stage for their encore and I have a cute granddaughter who has gone to many shows lately. 😂 My youngest daughter misunderstood the lyrics of Diary of Jane and called it Diarrhea Jane. My favorite songs are many: Breath, So Cold, Dear Agony, their cover of Who Wants to Live Forever, so many! Please do more!
Tons of great songs by this band. Dance with the devil and Evil Angel are great. They aren’t a Christian band but have a lot of religious undertones and he had an addiction problem so it has a lot of intro perspective aspects.
2004 and Breaking Benjamin hadn't really come onto my radar... went to Bayfest in Mobile, AL... Got there early in the afternoon and Breaking Benjamin was one of the early bands on the stage that later had Collective Soul, Seether, and 3 Days Grace. I WAS BLOWN AWAY by the band and Ben's vocals that day and have been a huge fan ever since. I can still remember his screams like it was yesterday.
Absolutely love breaking Benjamin. As someone who’s been here for the classic rock and country reactions as well as your political stances and wifey jam sessions, please do more of this. ❤
Love BB. They are a Pennsylvania band out of Wilkes-Barre..about 2 hrs away from me. Soooo many good songs from them. Ben started off with the singing/screaming but years ago he was told by the doctors that he had to stop because of his brain tumor. If you look at the cover for their album Dear Agony, it's a picture of his cat scan. To be honest, my fav song from them is a little jam called Home. It wasn't released as a single, but was on their first album saturate. Loved the reaction and PLEASE keep going with them. Amazing❤❤
This band is fire and even better live in my opinion. Great reaction as always and hope you dive into their music more. Also if you check out the Ember Trilogy its 3 of their songs that go together on an album telling a story
Breaking Benjamin is nothing but hit after hit, you could do about 20-30 videos just on their music. They were an inspiration to sooo many bands in the 00s/10s.
Early breaking benjamin was killer, i remeber hearing this for the first time as a kid and was hooked on these guys! Everytime they come up om my playlist the nostalgia brings me back🤘🤘🤘🤘
Pegasus, I hope you read this. I watch tons of your reactions, tons of others reactions as well. Great job you do. That said, you need to go deep on this one, BB. They have a huge amount of hits and the singer does colabs that you need to hear. Even if you don't react, just look and listen. I would suggest his cover of Iris, which I believe you reacted to the original (his.....with her, is better by far). Also, I know that you would enjoy the collaboration with Scooter called Far Away. I know I will watch most of your reactions either way as I like your raw reactions. Keep up the good work and enjoy!
Weird. I downloaded this and had it in my iPod and would listen on my walks. Maybe 15 years ago? Not my type of music generally but liked this. Looking back, I was very unhappy in my marriage. And as it turns out for good reason. Maybe the lyrics hit me on a subliminal level before I knew what was going on? Many songs I’ve loved forever and even made me cry, but I didnt know why. And then in the future (sometimes decades later) it all comes to pass in my life and I understand why I needed that song. Maybe not at the time but eventually. Thx for sharing this reaction ❤
Love how you spoke about fair use. If it weren’t for reaction channels, I never would have heard about the realest talent of all time. They are out there.
I love Breaking Benjamin so much! To add my list, Dear Agony, I Will Not Bow, Dance With the Devil, Unknown Soldier, and their new song, Awaken. They have so many great songs. I'm seeing them live in May and I'm so excited.
Yay!! I'm so excited you're listing to Breaking Benjamin! Seen them in concert many times and they are great live. I'd suggest Unknown Soldier (makes me cry) Red Cold River ( the music video gave me chills ) and Ashes of Eden (again, cried when they performed it live)...there are so many more great songs by them!
BP! Great reaction to a great band! An amazing track that kind of has the same meaning and imagery is "Love You To Death" by Type O Negative. The track is musically and lyrically amazing. The video is something to behold but, it is an edited down version of the track on the album. That is a rabbit hole you'll want to go down as well!
I am so glad you enjoyed it! Breaking Benjamin is my favorite rock group, I put their cds on repeat all and let em roll all day, please check out their song Topless.
I love Benjamin Burnley he's a great person! Every single song is good my favorite few are Dear Agony, Evil Angel, Angels Fall, I will not bow but anything from them is good
I love breaking Benjamin 🔥🔥🔥 choice of band to react to. Got to see breaking Benjamin bullet for my Valentine and avenged sevenfold live during a concert when they came to North Dakota they all are fire 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Breaking Benjamin is one of my favorites !!!!!! Please react to more of theirs! Breath is my favorite but I love sooo many of their songs!!! They just recently put out a new single called "Awaken"
Also, Ben has struggled with his voice, he's had surgery on it I think and suffered from major depression...the dude is phenomenal though...there is other tracks where he goes off on that harder side of his voice, he is truly amazing!
ive been watching your channel for a couple years now and ive been waiting for u to do breaking benjamin .....so cold and i will not bow are other great songs by them
There are a number of their music videos that are connected in a story I think it starts with "Red Cold River Run" "Ashes of Eden" is unrelated but easily my favorite of their songs. Definitely a rabbit hole worth going down.
There are so many good ones people have already mentioned! I want to throw in Give Me a Sign, Ashes of Eden, Dear Agony (Aurora Version), and Diamante's cover of Iris Featuring Ben
Breath, Failure, Never Again, So Cold, Dear Agony, Evil Angel. So many bangers, you cant go wrong with Breaking Benjamin.
Dear Agony breaks my heart
Can’t forget “I Will Not Bow” as it is by far one of their most well known songs
'Blow me Away' as well.
Evil Angel is such an underrated song from them, so good!
Don't forget Ashes of Eden
Dude, you’ve just hit a gold mine.
Breath and So cold are a must! I hope we get to see you react to these!

@wyattguilliams5325 you found it on Google, so it has to be true. Lol. 🤦♂️
"I Will Not Bow" is one of their best songs, but my personal favorite is "Home" because everyone needs a little Yellow Brick Road in their rock
"Home" is by far my favorite of theirs. Not that the rest aren't good. I just remember buying their CD and that being the song I would wear out.
Saturate is an absolute masterpiece !!!

This band has not changed their song in all these years. Absolute masterclass.
Breath should be your next song. Followed by So Cold. And Dance With The Devil.
Yay I’ve been waiting for you to discover one of my fave groups of the 2000’s. Dance with the Devil, Dear Agony and Breath are a must listen.

It MAY BE that a few members are Christians, and there is a Wallen dude that has been featured on a Love and Death song.....
Since you’re in this era, Three Days Grace should be next.
one of my all time fav bands, they're an amazing rabit hole to go down... a LOT of hits

The song is about a love starved individual going into psychosis and Jane is a placeholder name for the love that this person wants
Breaking Benjamin is amazing. Great live as well
I've always loved Ben's voice as well. Dear Agony is one of their songs that I think showcases it really well.

There are a number of their music videos that are connected in a story I think it starts with "Red Cold River Run" "Ashes of Eden" is unrelated but easily my favorite of their songs. Definitely a rabbit hole worth going down.
Finally reacting to my favorite band. This is awesome.
Their new song awaken is a banger. They have been around since the start of the 2000’s and have a ton of great songs.
