Amazing how the water blocks 99.99% of the deadly gamma rays that would turn your insides into goo, and they just handle the equipment necessary to get the work done, with their bare hands.
So Cobalt-60 has another advantage as a radioactive source - it is ferromagnetic (only iron, cobalt and nickel are). Didn't know that before this video.
@@kotnapromke yea Simpsons made the whole world think all radioactive stuff glows green lol, only highly radioactive elements actually glow like Actinium(Blue), Californium(Blue-green), einsteinium(Blue), Radium(Blue) and Curium(Purple), (Radium is used in clocks but the concentration is too little for it to visibly glow on its own, the green glow actually comes from the paint, and Uranium glass only glows green under black light, not on its own), its funny cause no elements actually have a bright green glow like that
No, Cobalt 60 doesn’t emit any heat. You could handle it with your bare hands like any steel and it would be cold to the touch. But you would receive a massive dose.
In 5 years half will be nickel in 10 years 3/4 will be nickel and so on there’s no set time for everything to break down it’s a ratio of how much is left over time
@@dandjc9394well, after so many half lives there will only be one atom left, which would spontaneously turn into nickel 60, after there's only a few atoms left it probably wouldn't even take 5 years for them to turn into Nickel
I'm glad I finally found a video of what an actual Co-60 irradiator looks like. That Cherenkov glow is beautiful and terrifying.

I am very grateful for footage like that

Wow! That is interesting, learned something new today 😃. Thanks
The glow from strong nuclear stuff sure is pretty, just keep your distance 😲

0:10 measuring device "Ortsdosimeter OD-02" from the East-German Company "STEP GmbH".
So dr Manhattan was made out of cobalt 60
Шикарные кадры! Черенкова наглядно!
Is this a cheaper way to heat my swimming pool?

@@trainingtheworld5093 Thanks. Yeah, you're right. It didn't work.
They're holding Active Irradiator By the sign of the cherenkov radiation
Cursed radiator
Why is the irradiated cursed?
Are these fuel rods for a reactor
No - Cobolt60 is not used in reactors. Likely for medical radiation equipment (cancer treatment) or for sterilisation of equipment or food products.

How long does it take for cobalt 60 to become nickel 60? I know half life is 5 years but when does it transform to nickel?
In 5 years half will be nickel in 10 years 3/4 will be nickel and so on there’s no set time for everything to break down it’s a ratio of how much is left over time
Ist stuff gets to safe levels after 6-7 half life's.
There will always be a little bit of cobalt 60
@@daisiesofdoom Depends on how you handle these things them. I would not use these things after 7 halflifes for decoration.

neat!
No protection?
Not necessary. You need more protection in a church haha
The water is high in hydrogen making it a very effective neutron shield!
@@leighstratton5380well, its not blocking neutrons, its blocking gamma rays, but yea, water is pretty effective

I'm more surprised no one seems to be wearing any kind of PE that would protect against falling into the basin...
