Fr Chris, I love the way you discuss the current and real struggles of our time. This show on addiction is closely tied to your previous episode on gluttony - both allow us to fill ourselves with what our secular society tells us will make us happy. Thank you for reminding us that God’s love is greater than sin. The continuation of Jim Wahlberg’s interview is quite compelling and I appreciate his bold courage in sharing his story. Fr. Chris, thank you for following up on this special episode on addiction. Your presence is a big support to those who may perhaps desire to change but in need of spiritual encouragement to take the first step. Thanks to Jim, he said all the important points he has to say to be of help to others. I pray for everyone too who are victims to any form of addiction because I believe it isn’t easy for them to get out in their own prison web. God tenderly loves them and we love them, too.
I watched 3 one hour long documentaries years ago on Alcohol, Drugs and the Brain’ with neuroscientists explaining what happens in the brain with addiction, why there are levels of addiction, and why some people are genetically predisposed to become addicts. It was interesting to see how neurotransmitters and dopamine receptors enable addiction. It changed my perception on addiction. We can’t ignore the science of addiction, but we can explore all the causes of addiction, be they physiological, psychological or spiritual. No alcoholic starts off drinking a bottle of whisky a day. No drug addict starts off on hard drugs and we can mistakenly believe we are in control. What starts out as a habit can, for some, turn into a full-blown addiction. You’re right that we are seeking comfort and self-medicating but the wrong way.
Thank you for this Fr. Chris and the whole Divine Mercy team, it is timely and relevant for my family’s situation. I have a brother who is exposed to drinking and drugs, it is him and my mother only in our house in Philippines now, i live overseas to work. Im the youngest and my father and eldest brother have died already. My brother who is with my home has been halucinating a lot of times, (hearing voices) that is scary on our part. For my brother, and for my mom who is at home with him. But God is so merciful and good, i have been praying the rosary and divine mercy prayer on behalf of my brother and the safety of my mother. This week a miracle had just happen. My brother who is long away was just recently attend one of the prayer meetings we have in our Church, I ask for your prayers Bro and sisters that the conversion of my brother heart will continue and may he devote his life to Christ our Lord. I also pray for those in the same situation we are in, for healing, deliverance and conversion in the name of our Lord Jesus.. 🙏🏻
Father Chris, as a pilgrim to Medjugorje, we were taken by a guide to the Communita Cenocolo, founded by an Italian religious sister, Mother Alvera. We heard testimonies by the people who were overcoming their addictions. They were from different countries and were totally dependent upon generous donors for food and clothing. This was beautiful to witness. Reading the counsels of Mother Alvera and her knowledge of this scourge is really eye-opening. She has all of the answers. (I may not have spelled her name correctly.) There are now Communita Cenocolo in the United States. Thanks be to the God of Divine Mercy!
What’s really amazing is the way that God’s grace places people where they need to be, without any logical explanation. Comunitá Cenaolo sounds like a totally altruistic organization. May I recommend that you read Jim’s story to learn about the progress that his son made through the program. God bless you Olivia 🙏🏼✝️
I stopped taking my mental health antidepressants, and that was the hardest thing, but it’s been a few months and I’m feeling a lot better and I don’t think of myself as a drug addict when I smoke weed I think of myself as a florist

Br Stephen did a wonderful job reading from The Divine Mercy Bible. I also enjoyed hearing Jackie tell us what she is doing this Lenten season and will join her in walking long distances from my car in parking lots. And Cameraman Giuseppe - well, I hope Fr Chris goes a bit easier on him this Lent and gives him a box of Cocoa Pebbles when he is hungry as a Corporal Work of Mercy.
@@ellenjimenez57 Stephen is a brother, not a seminarian. As I understand it, brothers and seminarians are different. A brother does not feel called to receive the sacrament of Holy Orders while a seminarian is discerning the priesthood.
True I pray to always want with God wants more than what I want to put God first to break the curse and remove all either save the Earth. What’s the church break the curse?
It will be 10 years March 25 that I have not shot meth. I was 96 pounds. I went to prison in 2014. I lost custody of my children in Idaho. My mother got custody thank God and my sister of my sons in 2014 I was shooting meth I was on methadone. I was prescribed 210 mg of methadone for 10 years. Thank you God I’m not addicted to opiates. I thought that beast.
Wonder if Fr. Chris and Cameraman Giuseppe planned that part out 😂 it just seems too well timed to be coincidental. That, or they just know each other too well at this point. One of the things I’m doing for Lent is the Fiat 40 with some gals in my friend group. Some of it is stuff I’m doing anyway and it’s going well, but some of it is pretty tough to get in the habit of. But, I think doing these things with a group is much easier and fulfilling, as they help me and I help them 😇 I know and am related to some people that have let various addictions control their lives, and have also seen some overcome it. I pray for them and hope they can be fulfilled by the only thing that can help them: God’s grace and mercy 🙏
@@alwaysmisskaryn thank you, Karyn! 😇 Fiat 40 is a women’s Lent program meant to help participants grow deeper in their spiritual journey during the Lent season. Guys do something similar, known as Exodus 90 or Exodus Lent. The similar points are giving up social media (though spiritual nourishing like this channel and worship music is kosher), adding prayers, doing small sacrifices (like cold showers, limited meals, no snacking or sweets, etc), and offering up it all up for God. For Fiat, there’s more ‘girly’ things like giving up needless shopping, no gossip, no hitting snooze in the morning, exercising more, no tv/gaming stuff, things like that. It also focuses on letting Mary be our guide, since she’s the perfect example of how to be a woman of God. Along with other Saints’ intercessions. There’s prayers in the morning/evening, daily Rosary and Divine Mercy Chaplet, frequent daily mass attendance, Confession, more mindfulness while praying in general, and adoration. Been able to get things like the Rosary and DM back in my habit. Logging online for daily mass with the Marians since I get to work early and it’s not busy then. Getting into the swing of morning/evening praying (both what’s in the Fiat and I’m adding the Liturgy of the Hours as well). Confession hasn’t caught on with me yet, but I am doing a nightly examen while I’m going to bed, so hopefully this weekend or next week I’ll go. Would do more Adoration, but the timing of everything hasn’t worked out yet either 🙃
@@jendoe9436 thank you Jen. God bless you. Sounds like many of the things I am trying to do. How wonderful to have a support system as you receive a lot of spiritual church with this channel as well. Great to put a name to the behaviour.
Fr. Chris, there is another emptiness also. I have read that according to people who become addicted to opioids the feeling they get from that is like feeling love. People are starving for love, and often the messages they got from society is "you are not worthy of love." My son, also struggled with addiction and ended up killing himself. For some people the voice of society at large drowns out the voices of those who truly love us. And the enemy of our souls, Satan the liar, fosters that critical inner judge that tells us we are not good enough to be loved. I read another article that said according to a British study, the two most common words uttered by men about themselves before their suicides were 'useless and worthless.' Just interesting stuff.

I had been taking [prescribed] sedatives at night for 20yrs+..I managed to stop them in December last year. Was this prolonged use of night sedation a form of addiction? I now get relaxed by playing a low volume swishing watery sound. Is this better or have I simply switched from a physical addiction to a psychological one? I found by chance this sound could help relaxation, although I did know water sounds could help relaxation [examples if you visit a water garden in the summer, or the sound of light rain on the window pane]. However I had never heard any thing like the swishing water sound on these vids. It s even better if I use one with a pulse in the background. .
I think many people use this “white noise“ to relax and fall asleep. It is very effective for newborns as well. Congratulations on kicking your addiction to sedatives! God bless you during this Lenten season, Michael. 🙏
@@tanyac.9005 Thank you and God bless. I hope that I do not have to return to sedatives {mirtazapine]. A trauma may force me, but hopefully not. I have had two very sad events within the last 2 years, y mother died June 2021, and my father a little over a year later, July 2022. I had not heard this water/pulse combination before, I found it by chance.

@@ellenjimenez57 Stephen is a brother, not a seminarian. As I understand it, brothers and seminarians are different. A brother does not feel called to receive the sacrament of Holy Orders while a seminarian is discerning the priesthood.
@@tanyac.9005 thank you.
Facts pray for me I smoke weed daily. 🙏❤️☘️🌹
Dr. Anna Lembke’s “Dopamine Nation” explains addiction as the human condition well.
Addiction to prayer can grow a 🌹📿 rose where once a weed tried to reign over a flowerbed.
But, I think doing these things with a group is much easier and fulfilling, as they help me and I help them 😇
I know and am related to some people that have let various addictions control their lives, and have also seen some overcome it. I pray for them and hope they can be fulfilled by the only thing that can help them: God’s grace and mercy 🙏
😇
Offering prayers Jen for your family members who are struggling with addictions. May I ask, what is Fiat 40? Thank you.
@@alwaysmisskaryn thank you, Karyn! 😇
Fiat 40 is a women’s Lent program meant to help participants grow deeper in their spiritual journey during the Lent season.
We Marian Helpers are here to support and pray for each other as well. May God bless your Lenten journey, Jen. 🙏
Yes you are correct. And I am very sorry to hear of your son. God bless him and may He rest in peace

Where should we focus when it comes to food addiction?
I’m going to try to pray more to say extra rosary as well give more to others I’m going to try to be loving and carnival and peaceful and not get angry and yell
I haven’t met with opiates in a long, long time, but yes, how old is very hard core on the street to Boston look up the methadone mile on mass Avenue. They call it mass cass.. it’s with the homeless live in tents
And when I yell, I’m going to say three Hail Marys
