Alas, still no trolley buses in 2019. Even the old catenary poles have now been replaced with generic lamp posts. How far we have come :-/ Bradford suffered badly in the 1960s and 70s, so much of its original heart and soul torn down and lost forever. Very sad.
I wish some British cities would have been able to preserve their trolleybus networks. They would be a real asset now and for the future, to increase green and clean transport. It would be so cool to ride even in contemporary style double-deck trolleys! Something that is not possible of course in those continental cities, that kept their trolleybus networks, where now all modern vehicles of course are either single units or bendy buses. This film has a lot of nostalgic flair, thanks for sharing it! :)

Electricity is not 'green' because it is mostly generated by burning fossil fuels - coal, gas and oil.
Wow it's great to see saltaire,Shipley and Leeds rd in the 1960s! Everything looked so clean and the roads non cluttered with signs, bollards etc. It's also nice to see Bradford in what appears to be the early to mid 1990s in those clips. Such a shame the city has gone so downhill now, real shame!
I know im asking the wrong place but does any of you know of a trick to get back into an instagram account..? I was stupid forgot the account password. I appreciate any tips you can offer me
@Maxwell Kenzo thanks so much for your reply. I got to the site on google and I'm trying it out now. I see it takes quite some time so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
Some legacies of the trolley buses can still be found. The really wide bit of road pictured at Wibsey and at Crossflatts just beyond Bingley as well as the recently replaced small roundabout at Saltaire required to allow the turning circle of the trolley bus due to the overhead wires.
Bradford, had you kept your trolley buses another year past the Oil Embargo of '73, you still might have had them today. Eliminating trams and trolley buses: BIG mistake, Britain!
Just like the Good old USA eliminating the Milwaukee Road the same time. Leaders are not leaders. They are Narcissistic Puppets. True leaders are penalised because Narcissists rally their flying monkeys in support
I was born and bread in Bradford - would have been about 6 when the trolleys stopped running. My dad worked on them and the subsequent petrol ones as a conductor - I have a few memories of going with him to the depot a few times. Bradford was much nicer then - today it really isn't fit for human habitation. I moved out to the coast 25 years ago and refuse point blank to 'be seen dead' there ever again lol. Enjoyed the vid a lot - cheers !
Nice then and now video. I grew up with trolleybuses in Kansas City and St. Joseph, MO. I noted the diesel bus was really spewing exhaust beginning at 5:15.
In 1952 I was 16 years old on a trolley bus going up Duckworth Lane towards the Roal Infirmary near Fairbanks Road Bradford, full speed when the driver had a heart attack the bus mounted the divider in the middle of the road and fell on its side. I was coming down the steps from upstairs and was thrown down the steps I was lucky just tore my new jeans.Dave J San Marcos CA USA(Any body heard of another one falling over on its side ?
New electric-driven buses are working great in Harrogate, so clean and quiet. Bradford was ahead of its time with trolleybuses, now is the time for Bradford to return to some form of clean transport.
Visited 13.11.2017 and oh boy has Bradford pulled its socks up;the City Centre makes my home town of Stockport look like a dump.Well done Big B you are on the way up
It's very odd seeing a video explaning how Bradford has changed but the then and the now are both in the past now as much of it all has changed, even the now sections of the film.
So these trolley buses could only go in certain directions since they were hooked on some sort of electric line above ? The driver couldn't take any short cuts etc.. ?
Am from Bradford and even back when this was filmed we had a mixed population of Asia and white people. But have you noticed how clean the areas where this has been filmed. At what point did the council and people stop caring about their city.
Buses have caused way more pollution over the years than cars surely. Did you see the shit that last one spewed out. Even in bradford today there running buses that are 15year old and some,

Bradford was once one of the most successful cities outside of London. The mills all shut down, the immigrants came in thousands and now it's poverty stricken. My country is going to shite for real
I remember the trolley buses well. They came along every twenty minutes, very quiet, very reliable and always on time . Wish we still had them.
I used to repair and maintain these at Thornbury Works bus repair shop on Leeds road.
Happy days.

I am from Latvia, lived in Bradford in 2006, very interesting to compare and see there were trolleys once..
What was your experience in Bradford like back then?
@@tdoran616 The city has it's own spirit and I enjoyed living there..

Brilliant. Just as I remember them. Thank you.
How very short sighted.
Bradford was known for so much rich history ❤
It still has a rich history if you know where to look, Bradford has changed a lot but the history behind it still remains fascinating
Before the invasion

Bradford has changed for the worse since this video was made imo. The "modern" pieces of fllm in this are about 15 years old.
mid 1990s by the looks of the cars. my guess is summer 1995.just seen a 90s camtrail in sky 4mins 55secs in video
As the video description says, it was filmed in the early 1990s.

The trolley polls that he refers to were actually called 'traction poles'

1960's When Bradford was a wonderful City. What a shocking decline into a third world ghetto. Very sad.

OH THE GOOD OLD DAYS
So these trolley buses could only go in certain directions since they were hooked on some sort of electric line above ?
The driver couldn't take any short cuts etc.. ?
They could a short distance on batteries
Hybrid trolleybuses have been made since then with diesel engines and electric motors.
Buses don't take short-cuts. If the driver skips stops, the passengers get angry.
