It's usually a strip of concrete to hold up the bricks above an opening or metal to take the weight, not a thin piece of wood or this place nothing! Building regulations. @@retiringtospain We call that a header, either above a door or window. We don’t have unreinforced brick construction here in the earthquake prone west coast of the US. Everything here is either wood or steel.
