I love that in this season the skirts have gone up a little bit. During WO I fashion changed and became more practical for women. I love how accurate the show was and the level of detail is just astounding.

amazing video, i love that she re wears things. I think we have a image that people just wore stuff and threw them away. But they would re wear things as fabric was expensive even after the sewing machine

I really did like and forgot to mention the black silk and chiffon evening dress with the shirred detail on the sleeves. I've always been partial to black with chiffon being a Stevie Nicks / Margie Kent fan since I was a little girl. But this evening dress would be absolutely acceptable for today at a high end gala. Really good well made beautiful pieces will always transcend time and the 'flavor' trends. 👍

All the outfit this season were beautiful, but to me Lavinia is the one that best represents the silluette of late 1910s, with the A line skirts, gathered waist and lack of heavy ornamentation. Mary's day suits seem to follow this aswell.

It's so incredibly hard to choose a favorite look from a series that had such spectacular costumes! I think for Lady Mary's season two looks, my favorites are:
3. The smart grey coat with black felt trim that she wears to visit Haxby with Sir Richard. The way she styled herself with the hat and gloves plus a small handbag looked very modern and sophisticated. It felt incorrect in that HUGE gilded entryway that they stood perched above. If she had married him and they had moved there together, Mary the individual would have disappeared inside that sprawling house because, as Sir Richard pointed out, his people buy the items to fill a home. That would have been the lady's job and it would have taken Mary YEARS to accomplish. That doesn't sound like something that would stimulate her at all.
I think the choice to put her in such a smart, sharp, forward looking outfit for that scene was very deliberate and it worked perfectly.
2. The red oriental embroidered evening dress that she wears repeatedly throughout the season. In the season one video comments, I said that one of my favorite things about this series was that the costume designer was not afraid of reusing or repurposing wardrobe items. This is a great example of that. The red dress is CLEARLY one that Lady Mary loves, feels comfortable and confident in, and she knows looks fantastic on her. Damn right she's going to wear it in every episode.
1. The proposal dress. I mean how can you not? It's an utterly gorgeous moment in TV fashion. The scene was lit and shot so beautifully. Because of the skilled camera work, we are able to see the dress in full frontal, side view, back view, mid shot, and close up. Fashion photographers around the world clapped like seals while watching this scene. And the dress. THAT DRESS! Sigh...

I liked that she wore most pieces on repeat. She doesn’t have a walk in closet the size of a master bedroom for sure. I wonder if tailor and designer came to the estate to measure her and show her the newest trends. Was it how she got the few new items during the episode?
