  • Take a look inside St. John's Terminal, Google's newest office in New York City. We've adapted this historic freight train terminal (the original end of NYC's High Line) into an innovative workplace designed around teams first, with multiple floors dedicated to working alongside our clients and business partners. St. John's Terminal was also built for a sustainable future, with solar panels, stormwater retention, and roughly 1.5 acres of native vegetation that supports local bird and insect species.

    Well, it's been invented decades ago. It's called university campus. I often wondered why campuses are so open, designed for people to meet, have a good time and collaborate, but workspaces are tiny separated cubicles designed for you to suffer in silence and talk to the man across the table through a headset. For me, a rule of the thumb for workspace would be if I found this new book I want to read, would I rather read it at home or somewhere at my workspace? I figured it out at college where I sometimes had to wait hours for classes and instead of going home, I was frequently tempted to rather stay at campus and read something interesting. Most universities have that in common and most great campuses kind of look like the Google's NYC office.

      It was a thing before University Campuses. They're called places that are walkable, and free of cars.

      Google has a reputation for writing great code and making a lot of money. The engineers work tirelessly around the clock to earn their pay, without the need for real-time budgeting or offices. Although an office space would be nice, there is no real work direction in terms of where to write code. Some engineers even work outside on some of the campuses with their PCs. I'm not a Googler myself, but I've watched some of the Googler RUclipsrs like TechLead www.youtube.com/@TechLead. You can watch him do a lot of code reviews, give good advice, and talk about crypto.

    • @cadsux
      @cadsux 7 месяцев назад +6

      Yes Mr. Obvious. Most of the worldwide Google locations are called "campuses". There's no rip-off there. Except that most corporations don't have a "university campus" style layout, nor break rooms and cafes with free food, nor free bus services to campus, free internal uber/shuttle service. And free-use bicycles. For the past 25 years, the entire Google culture revolves around this, and not just this new one NY location.

    • @slworking2

      Beat me to it. Why are they even bothering to open this new office when the CEO is so eager to lay off employees?

    • @cadsux
      @cadsux 7 месяцев назад +6

      12,000 out of 300,000 to 400,000 employees is a 4% cut of the workforce. At 100,000 annual salary & 30,000 bonuses, well, you do the math. As to why bother with a "new office"? How about contractual commitments, end-lease / decomissioning of other properties, having more modern facilities to meet the demands of users, and haters who comment on RUclips?

    Nothing screams "focus" and "productivity" like an open layout with a bunch of IKEA tables, uncomfortable modern couches, and a coffee shop. I bet they can't wait to prop their feet on that coffee table for 8 hours while sitting on that cheap chair while squinting at their laptop with its fan at full blast because it's balancing on their legs blocking the fan intake. It sure beats having your own pesky cubicle with a dual monitor setup, your own desk, personal storage, etc

    They also refused to sell things like: alcohol, tobacco, firearms or drugs of any kind. Chocolate was the closest thing to a "vice" that they sold.

    Google's New Office in New York City is full of splendor and exuberance for the exploitation of labor society. The culture and atmosphere in a team can either stimulate a spirit of innovation or destroy the thirst for it. How can you create and positively influence your organization's innovation environment to foster collaboration and interaction and ensure you maximize the potential for success?
    Working in an environment that allows for the creation of innovative ideas like Google is an ambition for any young Angolan who wants to join this Corporate Society. Companies like Google are very welcome to create an Office in Angola, thus creating greater opportunities for creating jobs for a generation of young Angolans and spur economic growth.
    We count on the collaboration of Google's Management Members in assisting this innovative idea for Angola!
    Kindly I send my compliments to the Management Team!
