    Once you have calibrated your hand grinder than you would simply count the clicks easy time you open the grinder coarse to keep track of your settings. For instance you may know your V60 setting is 4 clicks from 0, where as your ideal aeropress grind is 7 clicks from 0.
    All hand grinders will differ in the clicks and their ability to grind.
    Finding the 0 point is the same 0 point for every grinder though.

    Thanks - just got a Porlex Mini and was lost until I found this video - but concerned. Should the full circle be 100% even? I have about two clicks of 'stutter' before it stops. Does this mean the grinder is defective? To better explain, I don't have a full fall of the handle for about 2-3 clicks before the handle doesn't fall at all.

    • @AlternativeBrewing
      @AlternativeBrewing  3 года назад +3

      I'm not aware of any issues that would cause this and you will have a bit of grabbing of the burrs as you tighten it, but I would to be safe, take the ZERO point from where the handle no longer falls. Try holding the grinder body too at a 45º angle as opposed to a 90º and see if this helps 👍

  • @iutubsacs

    This is great. However, can you be sure it applies for all grinders? I have the Timemore C3 and using your method, the zero point I found was 2 steps different from what the "turn until you cant turn anymore" method yielded. So now I am unsure as to what the real zero is.

    • @AlternativeBrewing
      @AlternativeBrewing  8 месяцев назад

      good point - and quite possibly not applicable to all grinders. If the Grinder comes with instruction on the ZERO point - than follow this 👌 if no instructions - this is a great start for counting up to replicable grind settings

    How do you find zero on the Lume portable burr grinder when it doesn't have a handle? Would you bring the burrs as close together as the nut will allow, and assume that is 0?

    • @AlternativeBrewing
      @AlternativeBrewing  3 года назад +1

      That's correct - be sure not to turn the Grinder on at this stage as you don't want to force the motor to turn against the ceramic burrs.
      So If you're able to view the gap between the burrs as you tighten it finer - the moment the burrs touch and there's no more gap between them - this is the Zero point - or close enough to it.

    Does the zero of a grinder change over time, or does it always remain the same?

    • @AlternativeBrewing
      @AlternativeBrewing  4 года назад +11

      Zero is a constant figure that won't change.. It's where the burrs touch together and no coffee will be able to grind through. Your grind settings will change though. If your burrs become worn down over time, you'll need to grind finer to get a similar grind size - this would take more than 120kgs of beans before this would happen. For example.. you started brewing aeropress with a setting - 0 +6 clicks. As the burrs worn down, you noticed you had to grind at 0 +4clicks to get the same size beans - this would be a good indication of the burrs wearing down.

  • @Manny-M
    @Manny-M 4 года назад

    This might sound like a dumb question, but wouldn't zero just be the point where the nut stops screwing (ie at its tightest?)

    • @AlternativeBrewing
      @AlternativeBrewing  4 года назад +1

      Yes - It would be good if it were this way across all HGs. .. but the issue is that some grinders nuts - screw against the burrs far more than others - so a setting of 1 and you may still not get any coffee out of the burrs
      This way of checking the zero point ensures the moment you begin to coarsen the setting you'll get grounds. 👌

    • @iutubsacs
      @iutubsacs 8 месяцев назад +1

      Exactly. But "until you cant turn anymore" means different thing for different people based on strength and the subjective interpretation of how hard to turn. I wish my handgrinder took this into account and had a clear "stop" point

  • @thefreshestprince89
    @thefreshestprince89 3 года назад

    Everyone recommends c.6-8 clicks on the Porlex Mini Hand-grinder for a Hario V60. I’ve always assumed that was in reference to from the fully tightened position instead of the zero point. Looking forward to trying this out tomorrow morning!

    • @iutubsacs
      @iutubsacs 8 месяцев назад

      Well, in theory those should be the same thing. If they instruct us to turn until we cant turn anymore, there better be some mechanism or design feature to ensure that is a clear cutting point, for most people, not something you need to guess on. I'm not even that strong but can easily push my grinder 2 more clicks under what this video"s method gave me as zero.

  • @ekaterinakirillova1615
    @ekaterinakirillova1615 2 года назад

    Could you please tell why there is a need for searching for the "zero point", as it is not the tightest position. If I set the grinder to the tightest point and make one rotation, I get very fine coffee. However, given the comment before, related to the point zero - " It's where the burrs touch together and no coffee will be able to grind through. ", it does not add up. It seems that the burrs touch together not at the "point zero" but at the tightest position of the grinder.

    • @AlternativeBrewing
      @AlternativeBrewing  2 года назад +3

      So the zero point would be best described as the setting one click finer than the last setting you can grind coffee out with. - Though with some hand grinders - the zero setting is in fact 3-4 or more clicks away from the true finest setting.. and than, as is the case with ceramic burrs, there's usually 2 or more settings from the Zero point before coffee will be ground out. So it's just moving the scale up from the true finest setting, usually where the burrs touch, but not always the case.. and be able to relate to the settings quickly for more of a functional understanding of what grind size you're actually using ... otherwise we only have micron sizes to refer to

    Ok so the problem is that while grinding, my grind unjust undoes itself about 2.5 full rotations. So I would have to "re find" the 0 point every single cup of coffee I make. That seems brutal considering within the grinding for 1 cup itself, I have grind coming out at all different "settings" (as the dang thing undoes itself slowly). I think the real answer may be that those responsible for the fiszman brand grinder products belong behind bars. ('FISSMAN' Ukraine)
