  • Stars and creatives of Starz's Outlander (Caitriona Balfe, Sam Heughan, Sophie Skelton, Richard Rankin, Maril Davis, Matthew B. Roberts, and Diana Gabaldon) gather with moderator Kate Hahn at PaleyFest LA 2020 to celebrate their show. Topics include: their "incredibly dedicated" fan base; contrasting Roger and Brianna's relationship with Jamie and Claire's; Gabaldon's "accidental" creation of Roger; Claire's new surgery, including the many antiquated medical props; Heughan's memories of Jamie's near-fatal snake bite and the sad demise of Murtagh (Duncan Lacroix), a departure from the books; Bree's traumatic experience at the hands of Stephen Bonnet (Ed Speleers) and her gradual recovery process; and shifting from voiceovers to visualizing the characters' inner thoughts. Also discussed are the following: the unusual "silent movie" style of the eighth episode, in which Roger is narrowly saved from death by hanging; Claire's dissociative Thanksgiving dream sequence during her kidnap and rape at the end of the season; how the Fraser family will recover from their respective traumas together; the forthcoming dangers of the Revolutionary War; Bree's desire for a safe and stable family life; criticisms of the show's frequent use of sexual violence; hints about season six, including the Frasers' dangerous instinct to "put themselves out there" and help others; writers' room debates about what elements to keep and cut from the novels; and their eagerness to return to filming.

I will say I have watched seasons one through five more than I care to admit. Mostly because I always find there’s something that I missed, and/or want to rewatch a favorite scene again.

Started watching the show in the beginning of Quarantine (best decision to past the time away ever... thanks to Weddings and a Funeral on Hulu for the little reference that caught my curiosity having heard a tiny bit about it before for turning it into a full fledge obsession & piece of my heart lol) and since March have watched the whole series including the Season 5 episodes aired during it (thank goodness for those being filmed before this mess!!! 🙌🏻) through twice (got my mom into it, so I “had” to watch it with her as she fell in love with it-I bet you can recall what scenes I can’t believe I actually sat through watching it with her but I did. I am 24 now and I felt more awkward than she did but that still doesn’t make watching that with your mom any better 🤣🙈) and I just randomly started watching the first season over this past week almost to the second season. AND that doesn’t even include the individual episodes I’ve randomly watched over again, some nearing at least ten times I swear. All since March. Almost named my new reddish-haired Quarintine pup after Jamie (but the fam vetoed it, I also threw out “a leannan” lol) and got a giant Craigh na Dun snow globe for my birthday in July 😂. If that’s not a quick love/obsession idk what is 😅🤷🏼‍♀️
It’s even hard for me to believe I barely knew about it this time last year (among other important things we were not yet aware of that would change our lives lolololol...) it’s such a huge part of my life & has inspired so many thoughts, projects, etc for me since. I’ve known for a while that I had deep Scottish roots (I’m supposedly related to the queen who inspired Lady MacBeth... not sure if that’s a great thing considering what her character is known for 😬) but identified more with the British & Irish roots because I knew of their cultures more. Outlander exposes the beauty of the Scottish culture inspiring me to look deeper into the genealogy I already knew of so far wondering if my ancestors lived similar lives around that time. Led me to discover that actually on my dad’s family instead of my mom’s my ancestors would be living in North Carolina (New Bern especially, which made me so excited since it’s mentioned in the books & I think the show too) right along with them at that time! One of the fathers is recorded to have died young around their mid to late 20s in the West Indies seemingly because they worked in trading of goods back & forth from there during the Outlander time period. Outlander paints the picture of what that life may have been like and makes it relatable & empathetic to me when otherwise it would just be facts on a paper. That’s the coolest part of this show, it shows how many iconic different events in history (not to mention range of styles which I don’t think I ever considered there being, thinking 1700s only had one general style belonging to it but oh heck no that’s wrong) could be in one lifetime-both how many from the mid to late 1700s that you may have previously not related to each other and from the 40s to now. Being that my grandparents were born around the time Brianna was supposed to be, it allows me to get a glimpse of what their life has been like and how much they’ve experienced throughout it giving me the chance to relate to them even more (which is so interesting & comforting in a time when I sadly cannot really see them myself). Something that seems unique to Outlander’s storytelling world is it seems to do more than SHOW you what life was like in the past, but the characters’ emotions & storylines draw you in so much (I’d say relatable, but even when it’s not relatable to you the acting & writing is just so good you’re able to still experience what you haven’t with them) it puts you in a place where you can realize that it doesn’t matter what time period we are living in, we are all humans and more alike than you’d think. It has made me be able to relate to lessons of history from a more first-hand POV so much more to draw on aspects of humanity that hasn’t changed/still needs to change especially when you realize how many people of the past have been fighting for the very same things. It’s really remarkable to see similarities in moments/lifestyles in history that you would’ve never imagined being able to compare to things going on today but alas, I can through Outlander. It just gives you a more enlightened appreciation for those who came before us and got us here today. :) Before, you could understand history and different times but not what it was like to LIVE through them.
Okay, I think I’m finally done with my essay-thanks for coming to my Ted Talk... sorry bout that, it’s just hard to figure out how to put it all in words especially without run-ons 😅

    • @lizzie354
      @lizzie354 3 года назад +2

Speaking of those things you never thought you’d be able to compare to happenings of today: it’s especially quite an experience to watch scenes about epidemics/outbreaks in the show when you’re sitting in quarantine during a modern pandemic. Quotes & information like “it will get worse before it gets better” that Claire said in Season 3 resonated sooo much more than it would have had I watched it before this unthinkable event. Because I was hearing the very words from today’s doctors when I turned on the news!! 🤯 To think those words were written & filmed shortly before too then fast forward to now... also shows you that how to handle an epidemic IS known, we (I’m in the US, so especially us) just aren’t doing it as properly. 😞 Those scenes do make me grateful that if I do have to live through a pandemic, I’m so glad it’s now with modern medicine and technology 😅👍🏻
I can’t even wrap my head around what it would have been like to watch all that before this back when a pandemic was another one of those things I couldn’t truly imagine & only witnessed through a screen 🙈 Perhaps watching it now has made it that much more real to me because now knowing how different it is to SEE something vs LIVING it makes it even more relatable and allows me to know what it takes it to truly try to put myself into their shoes. I now realize that as hard as it looks, it’s even harder in reality. 🙃 And ours are not even comparable to the conditions their pandemics/outbreaks were-I can’t even begin to imagine what those before Outlander’s time we’re like if that was improvement! I try to peel away the filmmaking parts of the show of those scenes to imagine living through those situations to empathize with our ancestors even more now. I don’t know if any other historical adaptation, even if I’ve watched and loved so many, has really brought me to an understanding like that. I’m not sure if it’s because of watching it during a pandemic or the brilliance of every aspect of the show (and I’m assuming books, again I’ve only been introduced to the world of Outlander in March so I’ve just read a bit of the first book but I plan to hopefully pass this extended Droughtlander [yup, I’ve already caught on to the fandom terms lol] by with the others]), but I’m guessing it’s a combination of them both. :)
And can we just reflect on the irony that they can’t film the next season yet because of an actual pandemic after filming so many fictional epidemic threats?!

Speaking of Penicillin - I'll have to watch Season 5 again as I could be mistaken, but I don't think the fact that it was discovered by Scotsman Alexander Fleming in 1928, for which he was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1945, is mentioned during the show. Surely Claire would be aware of this and Jamie would be pleased to know that a Scotsman from the future saved his life a couple of times! Outlander + Google seem to be my best friends during lock down! LOL!

In the show she doesn't say *who* found it or the year it was found, BUT when Brianna says vaguely that it's not discovered for about 150 years, Clair states the exact number of years before its discovered.
Maybe she goes I to more detail about Fleming and his discovery in the book. It's a bit of overkill in the detail department for the show, though, if they can't fit it naturally into dialogue. IMHO.

@@stephanieellis5399 Over the 5 seasons lots of interesting facts have been part of the dialogue. I think it's part of what makes the series so interesting. I loved it when Claire described air travel to Jamie. That was a lovely moment that fit very nicely with the trip they were on. I love all the references to medicinal herbs and sometimes I research them after watching an episode. Simply mentioning the inventor's name and that he is/was a Scot is not "overkill" and it would please Jamie and be something he can easily relate to since it saved his life. She'll be using Penicillin again, so it's just a suggestion here.

This show is the best I've ever seen. And I'm old. My one dissapointment was the missing part of the book which portrays Jamie after Claires attack, when he so extremely sensativley makes love to Claire so that if she is pregnant, no matter what the chance there is, it could still be Jamies child. For me, that most sensative act was so very deeply, bravely given, shows just how deep his love for her truly is. I cried for a week after reading that. And really wished that had been shown. It was such a deeply impassioned expression of that love.

The rape of Jamie in season 1's "Wentworth" , and how Jamie deals with the aftermath of that throughout the series, is truly a masterpiece of the trauma and horror of rape. Outlander set the standard for that. Sam deserved an Emmy for that.

I definitely understand the perspective that Jamie’s went too far but in a way, I think it was also necessary to fully portray it to really do rape victims’ pain justice in order to make it understandable to us who have been lucky to not have to endure it. It makes sense that most films and shows show more of the scenes of the effects it has but I don’t think I ever truly grasped how it could shred every aspect of yourselves mentality not to mention the possible physical injuries by sadistic scum like Black Jack. I think it’s especially an important thing to include, no matter how excruciating it is to watch which it definitely is I can’t even imagine how much more it was to act out let alone actually suffer through something like that but people have in fact, since it’s still unfortunately such a huge issue that gets ignored because of how uncomfortable it is to face.
I really appreciated the filmmaking aspects of Claire’s tragedy in the last episode and it was heartbreaking emotionally, but it admittedly didn’t drill in my mind how life changing rape is like the one from season one did. Not even hearing Brianna’s suffering & seeing her physical/mental pain in season 4 and that was masterly, devastatingly performed too. I’ll never forget those scenes, but what truly burns my fury of necessity to prevent + get justice for rapes especially sadistic, troubling people is thinking back to Jamie’s scene. I don’t think I can watch it again, but I’m glad I forced myself to watch it at least once because that’s enough for me to never forget how much it hurts (including victims’ loved ones, their relationships, their identity and faith in themselves, their whole entire lives).
And I’m saying this as someone who lived with someone who came home one night to text me in the morning that they had just come back from the hospital because of being raped the night before at only the age of 19. I didn’t even know she wasn’t home when I got home that night, to think of what she was actually going through... I would then see the trauma for myself by watching her live through it (the heartbreak and cries I overheard from her mom who flew into town to comfort her, overhearing her incorrectly blame herself, we no longer watched certain shows to avoid triggering, she would walk different ways to class to avoid the guy as she pursued a restraining order which led her to have to feel embarrassed by explaining to her professor why she was late to class each day in result, having to know who the guy is and watch him just live out his life like nothing happened while she lived with the pain, installed video cameras on and in our house, saw how she dealt with talking about it when she was ready to, her nightmares-she couldn’t even watch the Full House revival because she had a nightmare that Jason Stamos did that to her they could be so real in her mind, how she hesitantly tried to resume her pursuit of love which I can happily confirm led to her recently getting married to her best friend, and so much more). Even more devastating, I’d learn that wasn’t even the first time it happened to her as two guys she thought were her friends ganged up on her in high school too. That year they’d Snapchat her randomly one night while we were studying to taunt her that they “missed having fun with her” and she was just so used it/didn’t want to think about it she tried to toss it off like nothing but of course it was obvious it stung like those shitheads we’re trying to do for their own amusement. Even worse, she’d learn from her mom that she too had been raped 😞 That wasn’t the only friend or acquaintance I’d learned had been raped either while I was in college alone. I know more than 10 and that doesn’t even include the ones my friends know of too. Although Outlander times were certainly less unapologetic & secretive about the violence and raping, it’s definitely still a HUGE problem which is why I find it so important to include and make the point of it as clear as possible to hopefully inspire motivation to actively pursue changing it for the rest of history. Luckily, my roommate didn’t endure one like Jamie’s but that doesn’t mean it hasn’t happened or that there isn’t still sadistic cases like that which there upsettingly is. In respect to all of those victims, I think it’s best to fully portray it at least once (but I pray none of them force themselves to watch those scenes and bring themselves back to their own experiences). Even from all I saw my friend go through learning about what it was like through watching it (still couldn’t even compare to what it was like for her to live through it, I know), I think I still needed to see that scene from season one to make the pain even more understandable and shout the reminder of how serious it is. Some people are lucky to not know someone whose dealt with it, or more likely, not know they know someone who has so they need to see and learn from these portrayals even more.
I think Sophie has rightfully touched up on this before, but although all the rape in the series can be exhausting it’s a good portrayal of the fact that there are many possible rape experiences & coping mechanism and none of them discount another’s. That’s the importance of showing each of their experiences as unique as they are to each character and that they could be different circumstances. That sadly happened to each of them, which unfortunately isn’t that unrealistic to the time-makes you wonder and feel for your ancestors- especially in terms of the situations the Fraser’s get themselves into which could involve being around worse people. I think it’s even more important having that one Jamie suffered because too many people forget that it happens to men too & more awareness needs to be brought up for them too.

Sorry for this turning into an essay... if you can tell, I really care about this topic (as everyone should) & didn’t realize how much I’ve thought about its relation to the show before. A few things I forgot to add, although it’s shocking there could even be more after that novel lol:
That conversation between Jamie & Ian in season 4, and even Brianna’s with Jamie, are such important insights that most victims understandably don’t talk about much so it’s great that the show can relay those types of conflicting thoughts victims go through that hurt them even more as if everything else wasn’t enough. It’s as if the characters not only let those of us who have not experienced it into victims’ minds, but even better, also finally provide irl victims with someone to discuss and let out those unspoken thoughts with if they didn’t already have someone which is so great.
The list of traumatic post-rape experiences I listed from what I saw through my roommate’s doesn’t even include the additional traumas of such things like the rape kit tests which are entirely humiliating and violating but necessary. Then that doesn’t even include the added trauma of actually doing something with those rape kits to pursue justice which is a whole other amount of humiliation, mental manipulation, violation that you have to go through if you want even a sliver of hope that they’ll get locked up and protect other victims from them-which unfortunately is most likely all you have, just a sliver of a chance that will even happen let alone for the amount of time they should be locked up for. Then the stress & despair it puts your loved ones in not to mention legal fees on top of all of that. The list goes on even past that too especially if it becomes a public case. So imagine that being on top of just the few rape scenarios Outlander illustrates. (yes, I’m aware there’s definitely more than a “few” in the show, especially for just one show, but I’m talking about in regards to all the possible scenarios which is one of the messages from the story, that there can be and have been many.)
Let me tell you, survivors have strength like no other they should be celebrated & intensely listened to not shamefully overlooked/judged. I think that’s another effective message Outlander relays since you already have respect for the characters and recognize that although those events shouldn’t have happened but it did so they chose to grow stronger from it however they could. It didn’t diminish them, they’re not trash or “sluts” for it happening to them like too many try to shame survivors as. It only showcased how bad the criminal was & the good the survivors had. They could never take that from them & instill it in themselves no matter what they did, even if they did have moments where they had to breakdown to get there-they got there. There’s so many moments of inspiration of this like Claire’s monologue at the end of the most recent episode, even Brianna declaring no one else could be more mad about it than her and getting to decide how she handled Bonnet (the powerfulness of her decision and lack of explanation in his last scene especially), Jamie’s whole Season 2 growth especially his decisions in the last episode of Season 1 (helped by Claire’s news for him & an ability to look forward to the future, even though we all know how that unfortunately went...).
On top of all that, I think portraying so much of those scenarios before, during, and after also does a really good job at making us all aware of what to look out for because threats like that are certainly still very real (shamefully, it’s been centuries yet still we usually can’t even get proper justice of it after years of trials, etc?). It can happen to any sex, any age, anywhere. By people you know, even if you’re tempted like Ian, by strangers, as quick as asking someone one question, etc. I definitely am more aware of my surroundings and when I let down my guard thanks to shows like Outlander and true crime docs (lol, but seriously no matter how much my friends try to get me to, I just can’t trust online dating after the 20/20 & Dateline, etc episodes I’ve seen for very good reasons...). Our beloved characters are just lucky to have lived to endure the trauma when in reality, way too many had their lives shortened on top of it (I guess that’s arguable, but I’m guessing they’d agree). May we never stop trying to get full justice for/in honor of them and hopefully someday soon, living victims too. There’s just so much to it that even after writing so much about it, I still feel like I’m probably missing some things too... 🙁 Everything about it is just terrible & we have to finally solve the root problems by somehow healing whatever causes these criminals to do such a thing or at the very least, monitoring suspects better before they even have the chance to strike.

Who is in charge of getting Emmy nominations for Outlander? I was shocked that Sam, Catrionia and Richard were all overlooked for Emmy nominations this last round. Plus, costuming and set design are all outstanding as well. the show needs better PR for the actors and crew. This past season saw some amazing performances. I was sure to see their names come up with Emmy Award nominations. Very disappointed.
On another topic - I love the Outlander book series. What a rich tapestry Diana Gabaldon has woven of story and character. Just love, love, love reading her stories.

Ellen McFadden totally agree with you about the awards, but PR? I don’t know of any other show where the actors and every person working on that show are so dedicated to promoting it. The interviews on so many platforms, the industry conventions they attend, the group reviews on-line, etc., is outstanding and clearly says OUTLANDER is the BEST both in TV series & books. There should be an award for a show that keeps their audience so engaged, because OUTLANDER surely does!

Now, I have to say, I felt just a tad jipped regarding Fergus' character. Particularly when Murtah died. I would have liked to have seen his reaction to that.
I really enjoyed the character growth of Marceli! Especially in that final episode. I'm hoping for more of those two characters in the next season, and Ian as well of course!

This was a wonderful session. Thank you Paley Centre: well thought out questions and responses from the Outlander team.
I am waiting impatiently for the next book please Ms Gabaldon. I have reread them all at least 4 times and being in my 70's am possibly running short on time. I do look forward to Season 6 & 7 (hopefully) and do prefer when you keep closer to the books, although the takes on the hanging and rape scene went well in my opinion. The sets, costumes acting are all outstanding and the story continues to enthrall me. It links together with so many aspects of my life: relationship? marriage, adventures, studies in history, language, culture, hobbies like herbalism, surviving in the Bush (Australian) and trekking etc. I love the way it works with married life/ relationship from youth to maturity, community etc. Thank you so much for the joy these books and TV Shows have brought me and my late husband, relatives and friends. Please use a different distributor in Australia.
