I am a pure amateur on swim stroke mechanics, but it seems Grimes advantage in the free was her left arm which she "threw" into the water flat giving her a longer stroke than Walsh who was '\"piercing" the water with both arms which may have given her a shorter pull. Both are spectacular. I love the post event comradery.

yeah this has nothing to do with why shes faster. her aerobic base is just on another level. walsh is faster 200m and down in freestyle actually. what you are seeing is Grimes swimming down from her usual distance and Walsh swimming up.

@@iizzcool - As I said, "I am a pure amateur on swim stroke mechanics." Although I did swim the 1500 on a senior team and know what it takes to refine one's mechanics. Tiny changes can make a difference and there's more involved than arm mechanics.
It's interesting her stroke with the lef arm differs from her right.

@@StoryGordon yeah thats why i tried to explain to you haha. i swam in college. one of the best pieces of advice i got from a coach is 'what happens over the water is far less impactful than what happens underneath the water', meaning some swimmers may have unorthodox recovery, even entry, but as long as the pull is clean and powerful under the water it doesn't matter as much

@@iizzcool - I understand aerobics measurement. It's called VO2 Max which is an instantaneous measure; It's important, but not the whole story. mechanics play a role, too, and race strategy. My point is that she was down 1.88 at 300 and and won by 1.66 swimming the last 100 3.54 faster than Walsh. Are you saying their freestyle mechanics have no bearing on their performance?

If Walsh keeps her arm outstretched more on her freestyle, she will get more length to her stroke and be more streamlined (says me lol)

Is it me, or does Katies’ voice sound a lot like Ryan Lockte’s. It felt like a flashback to one of Ryan’s post race interviews.
