At 19 years old I was a choker setter for a helicopter logging company in the Pacific Northwest. My older brother was a faller for the same outfit. I worked with the company for a year and decided that I wanted to have a job outside of the woods. Thanks for showing the public how amazing these jobs are.

How long before the timber is extracted and more to the point how on earth do they get timber that size of mountains like that I would love to see the whole process ie from when you are first dropped in to make the extraction point to where and how it's down to the transport stage because some of the last logs you have cut have to be close to one log loads

and your boss cant judge the cut if he isnt there to see the lean or the limb weight, but your face cuts are small imo but know one can judge unless your their with the wind, the weight and the feel, Im with ya young faller till the end

Now that is a daily commute I could make every freakin day Buddy....and the lake as smooth as a sheet of glass.
Glad them Cedars didnt get all weird and get you. We got into a BIG patch of really old Ponderosa this last week and the smallest is like 38" across the stump. 90% of the trees have their roots eat off or weekend by The Big Black Carpenter Ants so it's a tangled up mess but well worth our time to get them rather than let them rot or become huge Ant Colonies...so far we have not found any where the Ants have got higher than the stump so were getting 60, 80 and some 100' really straight nice logs to buck up. Our Son is working on clearing a road into the middle of them so we can winch out and skid them.

It can tricky cutting that bigger narlly trees.I was a falling a huge cedar that was center rot. It barber chaired up 40 feet then That teeterd before coming down.Got a flash back when you scrambled after you fell that split one.

Stunningly beautiful area - I worked up Indian Arm BC years ago building HUGE timber rafts/docks directly on the water - takes balls
of steel to work with huge lumber - you feel like a tiny ant - truly another world all together !
I find it hard to make really sense of this expensive logging operation - seems to be cutting down a bunch of majestic trees - some pretty rotten -
- not sure how much of the fallen trees are later flown out - all seem to explode on impact leaving only a few good salvageable pieces from each tree....
I guess that`s all it takes to make it profitable - kinda a shame. Could you later expand on what gets flown out and what gets to stay behind - thanks man
Most all cedar gets flown and for everything else, only high grade gets flown out

Ever made a pile of brush to throw your saw into during an escape like that!?
Use some hockey tape on your handles for non slip grip.
My choices when cutting timber are usually "Do I fall it to the left or to the right." NEVER, EVER, do I have to figure out how to straddle a downed tree so I don't fall 35' down a slope! Damn!

Nice spot sure is thick bush looks like you will have to pick it apart tree by tree .Bjarne what inlet are you working in now it is sure a nice spot. Time to run away and live to fall a tree another day well keep your head up and work safe. I will be looking forward to the next video.
Ya it’s fun when you have to stop and strategize how to best fall the wood. It’s boring when it’s too easy. Not at liberty to say where I am but it is a long way from the nearest town.
@@BjarneButler It looks like you should get some real good videos when you start picking some of them messes apart and there is some big wood there to I do enjoy seeing the big ones come down well keep putting out them great videos and be safe.
I have watched how the logs are flown off the mountainside. How are the logs transported to the mills? How far away are the mills located?
So much I'd like to say, but let's just go with, "Fucking Awesome!" Your cuts were far better than most professionals could have done. That dip on the second cut of the last tree...I saw that coming, probably because I could see myself affected by gravity and terrain in much the same way. You did hack out he flaw pretty nicely with the axe. Once again, I am very impressed with your skills. Oh, the footage of the flight in was absolutely Epic, as well! Really set the scene for viewers' understanding what kind of landscape you're working in.
As an old fart, I gotta insert a cautionary statement; Stop Getting Below the Logs! They can do the most unexpected shit, that you maybe would not believe! And yes, without the customary warning cracks or groans. Shift can be almost instantaneous. Even if you're working along side of them, you've got stay Above! Anywhere above, you can most likely only be tossed. Fall Gracefully! Anywhere below, You Can Be Squished! Miserable way to go.
Okay, so I couldn't just leave it at, "Fucking Awesome!"
Right on thanks for watching. Sometimes the log is too big for the bar so I gotta cut the low side(where the bar can’t each from the high side) first the finish the cut from the high side. It definitely a judgment call on every cut you do if it’s safe enough to do. If it’s not bucked all the way though then the chopper can’t lift it. If it’s too dangerous to buck then the chopper can lift one end of the log and reposition it so it’s safer
One thing about taking a helicopter to get to work, _You Ain't Leavin' Early!

The 572 sounds like it is holding a lot of rpm with that much bar (36?). Are you setting your chains up the same as for the 390?
