OMG. This group was destined for a second fame, years after their first hit. Unfotunately, wrong place, wrong time. Motown was on its last legs. Berry had lost any excitement a long time before. Thank you for posting this amazing tune.
Berry definitely lost interest in a lot of great acts. Look at Teena Marie. Motown was busy promoting artist like Rick James, Smokey, Stevie and Lionel Ritchie. Seems as far as the females he was like oh well... At least Teena was signed to Epic and made awesome music there as well as she did at Motown.. This song is so awesome..
thank you Lainey. I've always thought that the Bay Area had the best radio stations in the U-S and are way ahead on new and good music. I heard a tape of KYA from l961 and it sounded great! no stupid shucking and jiving like DJ's in the '50s and early '60s resorted to.
Thank you for uploading this, the correct speed and clean. I am going to be groovin' on the funk this drips with for some time to come. Thank you again!
This one my favorite tracks, always on my rotation...thanks for the feedback! Just trying to do my part and keepin' that Funk alive... groove on my fellow Funkateer!
You know this had to be a great song, especially with Jennifer Holliday and Latoya Jackson doing covers of it. So pissed Motown or their parent company never re-released their catalog on streaming or at least compact disc.
I was 10,when this song came out I grew up in Seattle, and they had this station called 1250 KFOX,they played this song a lot on this rotation.I believe this cut was released in the Spring of 1983.
And when it was hitting, they performed that snippet of it on the May 1983-aired “Motown25” NBC TV special. Can’t seem to find this included in the group’s online-available hits compilations. :(
@@marilynstevenson865 Yes eBay. I bought my initial DVD at Target a few years ago but because I play the DVD a lot I went on eBay to find another one in the event that my first DVD would wear out. eBay is the way to go!
Saw these sexy fantastic ladies on my mom's Motown 25 VHS tape last Saturday. They sounded better live during the special when they performed this song. However hearing this regular version of the song sounds pretty funky.
I apologized about the comments girls group High Inergy I never listening to play that songs ever heard "He's a Pretender" during on Soul train in 1982-83 season when Don Cornelius is came back after 4 months from his Brain Surgery.
I told ya once, I told you Again just like Vanity 6 did "Nasty Girl" Another girls group in company is high Inergy "He's a Pretender" great voice for good songs. 🎶🎶
Okay, I have a message for Motown Records. Motown, I just got done using a RUclips downloader program and downloaded High Inergy's song He's a Pretender from here and burned it on a CD-R. Now if you are wondering why I'm downloading it for free, I'm going to answer that with another question. Why the heck haven't you released none of High Inergy's albums on CD? High Inergy is your only Motown group whose music you never put on CD and to me that's darn near ridiculous. Yes they are on vinyl, but not CD. Please give me an explanation why. I am not doing anything illegal here because you never put any of their albums on CD commercially and not even digitally like the rest of your artists. Plain and simple. If you guys at Motown don't want nobody else downloading High Inergy's music free like I just did, then get with the darn times and put High Inergy's music on CD and digitally online. That's the point I'm making here. Get with the times. I'm just giving you Motown executives something to think about. Soul food for thought.
I wish they would put out their albums too! Motown released this song on a compilation a while back. *Funkology vol. 3: Dance Divas* CD has some funky tracks by Syreeta, Bunny DeBarge and Vanity...of you can find it I highly recommend picking it up!
I'd like to see a Unsung episode of High Inergy.
This was on heavy rotation in Boston on Kiss 108 1982-83. I was just a kid but I remember this classic❤❤❤❤
Kiss 108!!! You made me think of back home!

Payola
I thought it was Latoya’s original song
Hers was a cover. She used the same producer/songwriters who did this record of it on most of the album La Toya’s was off of.

Where’s da defendur
This version is the best in terms of vocals. Other than that, La Toya's version is the best one ever
Didn't Jennifer Holiday cover this?
