  • Սյուիտ Մ.Յու.Լերմոնտովի «Դիմակահանդես» դրամայի երաժշտությունից/Сюита из музыки к пьесе «Маскарад» М. Ю. Лермонтова/Suite from the music for Lermontov’s “Masquerade”
Aram Ilyich Khachaturian (Արամ Եղիայի Խաչատրյան (Aram Yeghiayi Khach’atryan) /Арам Ильич Хачатурян (Aram Il’ich Khachaturyan) (1903-78) was an Armenian/Soviet composer who blended elements of his native Armenian music with modern harmonies. He wrote music of various genres, and he is best known for his concertos and ballet music.
The original incidental music was written for Mikhail Lermontov’s play of the same name, which premiered on 21 June 1941 with Roben Simonov as director. It is said that the composition gave the composer a considerable problem, which was resolved when Myaskovsky gave the composer a collection of music of pre-Glinka Russian composers. The waltz gave him considerable problems nevertheless, but he was able to conjure up the theme quite unexpectedly - while sitting down for his portrait. The original score was Romance, Mazurka, Waltz (at the ball), Galop, Nocturne, Waltz (Bedroom Scene), Waltz at the Masquerade, Waltz at the Casino, The Baroness’ Theme, Kazarin’s Theme, Bracelet Theme, Introduction, Finale (at the ball), and Chorale. However, it is in this suite form (arranged in 1944) in which the music for the play is best known.
(0:00) No.1 Waltz - The world-famous waltz follows the structure of a typical waltz with trio.
    (0:39) Climax
    (1:08) Variant
    (1:28) Climax
    (1:48) Return of initial melody
(2:14) Trio, more settled. However, it appears that the theme of the trio is related to the waltz theme.
(2:53) Waltz da capo. It is almost identical, but shortened.
(4:11) No.2 Nocturne - The solo violin plays a prominent role in this lyrical nocturne.
(7:41) No.3 Mazurka - The mazurka is very bright and lively.
    (8:20) Trio
    (9:35) Outer section
(10:13) No.4 Romance - The strings are in the focus in the romance, which is based on a single lyrical theme.
(13:49) No.5 Galop (Polka) - The texture of the galop reminds us of the Sabre Dance.
(15:24) An intermission by the clarinet and flute
    (15:49) Return of the Galop

Ce compositeur n'est pas assez connu. L'orchestration vaut le coup, et les motifs mélodiques lui sont très personnels. J'adore !

I remember playing this the first time in orchestra and immediately fell in love of the waltz and the nocturne.
