There were only three Universal Empires i.e. Mauryan, Mughal and British during which Indus and Gangetic plains, the former comprising of most of present day Pakistan and later consisting of area around river Ganges were unified and ruled over by central authority with their capital situated in Ganga(India). If combined together, they have ruled subcontinent for almost over 500 years. Apart from these few centuries Indus and Ganga had co-existed as separate entities for thousands of years. For the major part of it's history Indus was more affected by the political changes happening around its North-westren frontiers than what's happening down in Ganga in the west. Indus valley civilization, Indo-greek, Scything, Bactrian and Kushan empires are some examples to justify previous statement .
