I hate how fish and hamsters are treated almost as "living toys". I myself was guilty of that when I was a kid, but it was because I was not properly educated.
In fairs when I see gold fish being given to children as a prize, I'm like WHY??

I won a goldfish as a prize at a fair when I was little. I became absolutely enamoured with the little guy, so my father helped me set up a nice tank for him. Our at-home filtration system was kinda shoddy, so I had to change the water more frequently, but I managed to keep the water healthy for my fish. I became SUPER interested in fish and hyperfixated on them during my Otto's lifetime. My little guy didn't live too long, only a few years, and he got HUGE. My Otto lived for about three and a half years, which is already ancient for an inbred little feeder fish, but it still felt way too short. I was absolutely GUTTED when he died. He was 11-year-old me's whole world, and losing him was all I could think about for the school year. The more I see videos and channels like this talking about fish care, the more confident I am that I gave that little feeder fish the best life I could. I hope to take care of fish again someday, in Otto's honor. They're such beautiful creatures, no pet deserves to be a "disposable" pet.

Sounds about right! Goldfish naturally grow quite big, but lots of people don't know that because most people think it's fine to keep them in tiny little bowls, stunting their growth. Idk a whole lot about fancy goldfish (I very much dislike most fancy goldfish, the same way I dislike how people have bred pugs and siamese cats), so maybe some of those are bred to stay smaller, but I know that normal goldfish are meant to grow much bigger than people think.

Each fish has its own unique care requirements so it’s hard to answer this question with a straightforward answer.

The amount of people I had to turn away because they wanted to keep their fish in tiny bowls (some people like to use live fish as table decorations?) was shocking. From experience, I find that 'beginner fish' are still harder to care for than a dog. Although bettas and goldfish can live long lives under bad living conditions, as you say. Surviving doesn't equal thriving, the bettas and goldfishes I saw in other people's houses have scales that are falling off and fin rot problems.
If you live in ignorance and buy fish without educating yourself, it's easy. But when you actually do your research, fish keeping is so hard😂 (and expensive AF)!
Me and my dad wanted to keep goldfishes but after I told him what it would take to keep them healthy and beautiful he said it was too much work and we don't have the space to house them.

    • @wolverinexo6417

A fish should never be harder to take care of then a dog. You should be walking your dog 5 times a week or preferably everyday. Dogs need near constant attention and there food is expensive.

    • @citroken
      @citroken Год назад +17

@@wolverinexo6417 I think the problem is what she said where people think surviving is good enough because most people can't tell whether a fish is "happy" or not with their quality of living.
Idk about being "harder" but it's definitely more tedious to me to learn everything your fish needs, make sure everything from the ph, ammonia, salinity, temperature, co2 levels, bacteria etc are balanced correctly to have healthy growing fish + the consistent cleaning of their tanks and average care taking, not to mention random diseases that seem to just come out of nowhere vs. A pretty easy to understand dog with simple needs similar to our own so we can easily recognize when something is wrong.
Ofc it's up to personal opinion and as someone that's owned both it's obviously never an easy job to be any pet parent!

In my experience guppies are the hardest fish to keep. I love guppies, but always struggle to keep them alive :( I had other fish thriving in the community tank for years, but guppies only live 2-3 months max. I even set a separate tank exclusively for guppies with all the parameters met, but still they're dieing. I gave up on guppies

I had zebra fish for a while as a teenager and it required intense research and a lot of attention to detail. I learned a lot from other fish owners and before I even got mine, I learned to acclimate their water to the tank, etc. It was fun but a lot of work and I respect people immensely for having fish long term! It’s definitely not easy!

I had a nice healthy goldfish the other day. His tank had an algae problem. Algae would not stop coming. My mom bought algae control or something from Walmart, the day after she put it in he wouldn’t eat. I saw that as a problem because he always rushed to eat. I gave it another say but i regretted that. I woke up the next day to find him dead. Would not recommend algae control from Walmart!!! RIP my sweet baby Finn. I will never forget you 💔

I had multiple betta fish, one lived two years, one lived a week (it was sick, I told my mom, and she said it was fine, it died three days later), and one who lived a year.
For a kid in 4th grade I think I did a great job. They lived in a pretty large tank and I cleaned it pretty often.

Yes bettas can be hard to get the environment right, plus I found when you buy them from the pet store, they can already be stressed and die not long after you bring them home. On the other hand, my pond goldfish were just feeder fish and they are thriving. Started out as big as my pinkie and now they are a handspan. They started having babies last summer, much to my surprise.

One time when I was like 7, I had a decently sized tank with goldfish, and the mama killed her babies after a while. She just ate them for no reason. They were being fed, the tank was being cleaned. I just woke up one day and the mama fish ate like her 2-4 kids. She didn’t even finish them.

We got two fair goldfish that died almost immediately in our tank, we didn't know they were cold water fish(we were like 7 and 8), so when we found out the type of fish that were warm water we got fish suited for the tank and water we had. All of our fish lived for years even after we gave them away after that, lol. Bala sharks have got to be my favorite!

A friend who moved left a fish behind to me when I was a child. Another girl and I "split custody" and took care of it swhiching it each month. All I was told is to change the water and use the heater - but my father kept unplugging it because he thought it was a fire hazard. I didn't know better and now looking back I feel really sorry for the fish.
