I think it's silly outrage. The song is called unholy it's about a relationship he had with a man who had a wife. Adultery IMO is unholy so this performance fits the mood of the song

The "unholy" theming is absolutely intentional. After the backlash surrounding Lil Nas X's video, this was a nose thumbing in the direction of all the haters. You can't use hell as a threat anymore because we embrace our "unholiness'! I love this unapologetic outward expression of artistic talent. Sam Smith just does it right! Yas!
The song is about the cheater being unholy though. In my opinion it is throwing their unholiness back at them. We aren’t the unholy ones. They are. They make the rules and break them all, so they make up new rules to suit them.

I love how the straights are so mad about this, cause the funny part is that this is talking about seemingly straight men stepping out on their marriages and oppressing queer people. This was to illustrate the real deviants in the room, the men who make laws and support/do harm to queer people but present a bland "Christian" false face to the world. That show was about what was inside that man, it was showing who those men really are. And that he wishes those discarded women could get some kind of justice, even if beyond the grave. It was honestly beautiful.

Very much appreciated! I love this song. After seeing this, I feel there was too much "demonic" hype. I just feel like if it was gonna be “devil themed” it didn’t have to be that deep it was just weird the way singers or rappers have similar ways when they do music videos around this theme like dancing in circles fire cages then not to mention how most of the singers or rappers we’ve listened to for a really long time change drastically. Sam's song not only features lgbt people, but he's also criticizing men who pretend to be one thing to fit into conservative circles who are actually something very, very different in secret.
Then, to boot, Kim Petras shows what happens when you treat a trans kid well, treat them with dignity, and allow them to actually flourish. Kim's mom listened to Kim when she told her who she was and allowed her to be who she was meant to be. And she's now a happy, flourishing, Grammy aware winning artist. She's a personification of how wrong conservatives are about trans people. She's what trans people can be when they're allowed to just live their lives and pursue their dreams.
It's not hard to see why people like Ted Cruz are livid.

the whole point of the song is about the husband cheating on her doing "unholy" buisness. "Left the kids at home, so you can get some" its about how unholy the husband is doing these awful things to people who (chances are) have no say. In the offical MV he ends up dying because of all the vile things he did. I get the whole "oh its a devil song" Thats what Sam Smith was going for! "Devil made me do it" and that chances are if youre going to somewhere called "the body shop" those people youre fucking DONT WANT TO BE THERE. I think he could have had just as much of a theatrical impact had they covered him in a floor length sheer gauze veil! A red silhouette of him rising out of the circle of bodies would have looked amazing and soooo dramatic 😍
