Trapped in a sprawling and abstract shopping mall realm, you must explore, run, and hide in order to escape. Use your stereoscope to hunt down CDs, raid cash registers to buy items from vending machines, and sprint to safe zones when danger is near! PNG monsters wander with mysterious intentions…

Inspired by The Backrooms, Five Nights at Freddy's: Security Breach, and Nextbots, PNG Mall is an indie horror game set in a liminal mall, where you must explore, run and hide in order to escape. Unlike Roblox Evade which also has nextbots, the PNG monsters in this game all have unique AI and abilities that make the survival experience more interesting. Also apparently this game gives similar vibes to Kane Pixel's The Oldest View which has the Rolling Giant monster, but it's not inspired by or related to that. Kane Pixels is the creator of the original The Backrooms (Found Footage).

I think one detail that would make this even better would be giving the nextbots unique animations to make them a bit more lively and creepy.
I can imagine that mask one having its eyes closed and once your line of sight is obscured for even a second it's eyes would be open and staring you down >:)

if by animation you mean a single image they change to, yeah. i think animating it would take away from the uncanny essence

multiplayer would be awesome with the players being stock images of people
also when opening doors or stuff like that i think it would be pretty awesome if there was a image of a hand that opens the door and maybe even a image of a leg kicking the door down when using soda
Sound design is on point! And if you're going to include more well-known images like the peg in the doorbell, I'd like to see a touch of humor in the game! It'd feel weird for a serious, gritty, horror game to have well-known memes in it! Good luck with the game!

I think that some visual imperfections would add to the horror like maybe its like and old crt tv kinda visual when a monster comes by and like there can be a camera room where the cameras don't work and you have to fix it to be able to look at room you cannot access yet and turn on more light. Idk just an idea

Hi Derndreff i like the game so much here is a advice what about you add 3d Characters. The Nextbot Style amazes me but i feel like there is something missing maybe add a nextbot/3d characters or enemy that acts like a ally but actually a enemy

Here is and idea: add a entity that messes up the map in a way by switching up the room near it but only temporarily to confuse the player
Hey I have a few suggestions and I think the game should maybe have some form of escape or even a feature to hide from different types of the monsters instead of just running away, I mean this as in say one of them is chasing you but it teleports behind you every time you think you get away are getting further away which makes it impossible to escape from, Well maybe with this monster you could no clip into types of walls to hide from it as inspiration from the backrooms if the character unlocks or finds a device another idea being maybe an element of a larger monster that if you move it comes for you. Just basic things like this to spice up the experience for different sections of the game to add a level of “chapters” to the story.
idea: periodically all the lights go out and the player is forced to quickly find a store or room to stay in, all hallways or large halls become lethal to stay in after a very short amount of time because there is now a dangerous, pretty much unavoidable nextbot which roams there. since its dark you can't see it, only hear some terrifying noise from it every now and then, or an eerie tune that constantly plays. After some time the lights go back on and the nextbot is gone.

Also it would be nice if the energy drink gave you a bit of night vision, making fast turns at high speeds seems hard with such a small cone of vision

Idk if you have already added a nextbot like this butttt. You should add a nextbot kinda like one I found on steam. Instead of just running after you mindlessly the nextbot would stalk to first. So you would be walking around doing your tasks and out of the cornor of your eye you would see the next bot after you make eye contact the nexbot would run away trying to stay out of sight. After awhile the next bot would keep coming back to stalk you. When the nextbot is ready it would go into like a chase mode and just start running after you. After you get away it would go back into its stalking phase. Thats just a sugestion hope you like it!

I can really see the passion for this project and am exited to see the dial turned to 11 with mechanics and quest, there's definitely this aesthetic that I can't exactly put to worlds, but it's like "Nostalgic Liminal Crossover" with that dab of a surreal and whimsical feel. Please take your time and make the game to your hearts content, one thing I recommend is adding ad and movie posters that are semi-surreal but not over done. I don't have a lot of skills but I have been dabbling in making weird-core art and am willing to try to do some VA if you need any, I have no experience but I'd love to help with something that interests me as much as this does! exited for more 👍

I genuinely really love the whole aesthetic of this game, the PNG aspect reminds me of baldi’s basics in the best way possible and i think this game has some serious potential from what i’ve seen, i hope i get to see some bigger youtubers play it once it’s finished :)

NEXTBOT IDEA: Bots according to each color CD that can spawn out of sight in a room nearby. The bot will make slightly loud echoing shingle sounds overlayed on top of eachother with different speeds (to give more adrenaline), immediately alerting that she had spawned to ze player.
3 (or 4 Idrk) bots can only be seen through their assigned color from the CDMaster. The sisters appearance share that they look like orbs with shine rays, and once seen through the CDMaster for 1 second from being cracked open from being sighted, that not will have a little girl giggle reverbing by a lot. I can attempt to make diagrams to further elaborate if I can get yur disco

A nextbot of a shadowy man that toys with you and learns your patterns and adapts accordingly an extremely rare encounter but a hard one to counter as you must constantly change patterns thus why its an extremely rare encounter

Can you just please make the game coop? It makes almost every horror game 20 times better. And we also lack of good backroom type horror games that are actually good and coop (2-4 player)

i love the game. huge problem, you need multiplayer. now i'm not pressuring you, but after a couple dev logs you should consider a multiplayer gamemode such as co-op (all players work together) and pvp (one team are nextbots and the other team is players) as a challenge. good luck

Give nextbots random and unpredictable traits that make the player feel like theyre under pressure and they dont know whats going to happen next. These are examples of what you could do:
-Make one play a song then when it finishes it runs towards the player with a sound that keeps getting louder and louder when theyre closer then the player needs to hide or look at the nextbot to avoid getting caugtht.
-Make a nextbot thats very fast that cant do anything to the player but just scares them or teleports them somewhere else when theyre caught.
-A nextbot which runs away from the player then attacks suddenly which would catch the player off guard.
-One that follows the player and stays behind him and whispers but if the player looks behind him he loses.
-You could also make one which hides in corners then screams when the player sees him.
-You could make a procedurally generate a hallway with subtle clues that the player is not supposed to enter it then when they reach the door
thats on the end of the hall its locked, when they turn around a nextbot runs towards them.
-A really good one is one that disguises as other nextbots and can do other nextbots abilities with other sounds as well making it completely unpredictable.
There are so many ways to add unpredictability and it could make the game scarier. However making them annoyingly unpredictable and not scary can make it frustrating for the player, you can make it so that they can be avoided by an experienced player who has encountered the nextbot before because theyre most likely not going to be that scared by something theyve seen many times so if they lose it wont be as fun as losing for the first, say, 3 4 times or so. So basically if its too luck based or difficult to avoid, make it easier. You can also make a journal or a place in the menu where the player can see all nextbots they encountered and how to avoid them but without showing them what other nextbots they can encounter so that the others stay unpredictable. That way the game will be fun for new players and the experienced ones.

I have a idea and it is gambling but you don’t lose money or win money it just takes your money for a little bit like 1 minute and then gives it back to you or it gets you money for 1 minute before but it’s actually stolen money from a nextbot and it will be random nextbot and after a little bit the nextbot takes the money back idk it’s a idea and good luck with your game
This is a cool idea actually... it might be hard for me to properly communicate to the player what is happening (the rules of engagement might feel random or nonexistent) but I might find a way...

It's good! It was in a state that I didn't like for a while, but we're on a very upward trajectory now. Free demo will be here eventually. Sorry for the lack of videos haha, it makes more sense right now for me to grind gamedev than make more videos!
