Love this conversation. I’m frustrated by how quickly platforms discourage creativity by changing your algorithm completely after one random search. I could search ‘monkeys’ once and suddenly my whole feed is wildlife. It’s like CHILL let me be curious in peace! It doesn’t mean all my interests and hobbies have completely changed! And it’s insidious because it will stop showing you content from creators you love and watch all the time. I wonder if there’s a way to get around this…

GAWD I CANNOT LOVE THIS ENOUGH. The amount of times I’ve almost clicked DELETE on all social media accounts this week is unreal. I’m so over everyone trying to look the same and i don’t get it. Growing up in the 80s and 90s we just loved to express ourselves, sure there were trends and some sameness, but not to this degree. The level of hate if you don’t conform is insane. I appreciate your channel so much and crave the depth that you bring. Love makeup too, but i crave the in depth conversations. Thank you and please keep making videos that make us think and grow! XO

i think i just fell in love with your brain! being 66 and having been brought up by endlessly curious parents in a time when we had to venture forth on our own to find the stuff that fed our minds (yes, there's that feeding again) and following up on all manner of references and jumping through all the sections of the library and bookstore, i couldn't help but notice how desperately uncurious people have become. it makes me so sad as these people are our future. i have trained, as best as i can, algorithms that i have to deal with to just throw wildly random subject matter at me and to continue to do so and not try to get comfortable with me. that takes effort but it is fun in a way.

"A trough of information" really sent me for some reason. But yes, agree, curiosity is key! All the social media has become so unbearably boring, I have largely disengaged. Reading is much more interesting, and I'm so sorry school ruined reading for so many people. I firmly believe that more often than not someone who "doesn't like to read" just haven't found the right genre or topic to read about. There's so much weird and wonderful stuff out there!
Relatedly, I recently watched a video on RUclips about how gen Z find hobbies "cringe", and... are gen Z okay?

Capitalism has always been sold to us as the only path to innovation and progress, when in reality, it mostly generates uninspired copies of whatever is generating the most profit at any given time. Capitalism and creativity have always been at odds with one another because it doesn't respect CREATING for the SAKE OF CREATING. We all need to stop worrying about how to monetize our creative pursuits and just start making shit because that's a huge part of being a living human being.
This shit has me seeing red, but thank you for this - it's an important topic and no one talks about it. Kudos. ❤

Also, THANK YOU for acknowledging that curiosity is a good muscle strain and is uncomfortable. As a decade of political science major with human rights and restorative public policy minors (yup, doing nails helped partially pay for many a headache and despressing quarter 😂) you summed up beautifully the struggle with being confronted with things outside one's comfort zone not being bad but opportunity for growth and critical thinking.
One of my favorite initiating brain puzzles: our professor gave us a Czech story about a man who put himself in a cage and starved himself to death as a self-described art instalation. We were asked to discuss amongst ourselves if it was indeed "art."
Next day, we all had conflicting feelings and answers, only to then be presented with "how do we define art? What is considered of value culturally, and now how do we look at a culture asking for protection or restitution of said art and how would they go about pursuing it? For example, after WW2." It took a week of classes and it was messy, but the discussions and challenges were honestly a beautiful struggle. I think a lot of that had to do with nuance and no singular right answer. It emphasized the process of exploration and struggle as valuable and not merely the dominant outcome. ❤

I agree with the idea of seeking curiously outside from the algorithm and doing more reading and writing. As much as I disliked university, I’ve always been an informational reader. I love this kind of video, Kackie! I think what you're saying has a lot to do with fostering critical thinking in oneself. Critical thinking is connected to curiosity because it requires you to ask yourself questions about yourself and the world around you, sometimes very uncomfortable questions, such as "Am I bias regarding X matter (my words/actions)?" The way many people either accept anything they hear/see like an absolute truth or discard it completely is scary. It's very hard to develop critical thinking when the algorithm keeps pushing on you the same things over and over again and without any context whatsoever. You're right that we have to expose ourselves to different viewpoints and experiences. Well, I could go on and on, but that's enough :) Keep being your "bleeping" weird self, Kackie! 😍

And the hits keep on comin’! Another thought provoking video. I remember your recent video where you recounted your grounding and clarifying trip to Arizona. I live in Arizona and completely relate to that energy.
You mentioned that we all have “the empty”… it’s true. But I have to say that some of the only times I feel “full” are when I’m in the back country here in Arizona. There’s something fulfilling about the wilder aspects of this state and the way it sparks my wider curiosity is something I haven’t experienced since childhood.

YES. Just subscribed. The internet needs this message-thank you! So well articulated. I'm not sure if I'd have connected the idea that critical thinking (as you say, curiosity) is essential with the idea that it's essential for happiness. YES. Marketing at it's finest. Such an important sell, rn. I've been working (and reworking) my own first YT video, and it's making me crazy because I'm so bad at it. LOL. Another truth gem of a takeaway: the reason I think I'm stubbornly trying to do this thing I am very bad at is because I'm not stretched, not curious, not challenged by anything in my life. I worry what this means for the quality of my initial videos, but my plan is to follow the breadcrumbs and make the crappy content, anyway, to unlock the good stuff. LOVED this. TYSM.

Around this time of year my local fire department takes a couple of trucks out, blasting sirens to get everyone's attention, with someone dressed as Santa waving from the last vehicle in the line. Every year, without fail, I greet the sounds of this mini parade with the utmost annoyance, thinking"For G-dsake, what is the purpose of all this racket?" before remembering that it's December, and even though I am neither a small child nor have any, I can still (a bit grudgingly) appreciate the joy this little tradition brings. Love this video, Kackie! Your realness is always like water in a desert. ❤
Our feeds cater to our desire to be perceived as "good" rather than inspiring our curiosity to challenge ourselves, explore new ideas, or find community.
At times, it feels that both marketing and our consumption patterns have changed community to being an amorphous concept we "subscribe" to rather than participate and create within. It makes our actual engaging and nurturing relationships, community, and pursuing critical thinking feel like an act of reclamation and resistance.

Wow, this articulation of curiosity and the way it interacts with engaging with people you disagree with or who just think different things than you really tickled my brain in the right way and made me sit up and /think/ (and take my headphones out and stop looking for another video to watch). It's so funny the way that the algorithmic internet is so often talked about as like, feeding the novelty impulse in us, but actually it has become the total opposite (and maybe always was the opposite; I think link-clicking is still a better source of genuine novelty than a feed ever was).
The way you talked about the nothingness wanting to be filled really resonated with my conflicting feelings of the internet. I am out here reading blogs in 2024, and I find exploring the indie web to be really exciting and fulfilling and feel completely different from social media (even something like Tumblr where i still have a reverse-chron feed of self-curated weirdos rather than an algorithm), but it also explains the flip side of, it's 11pm right now, why was my default assumption that I "need" a next video to watch after this one? I simply do not "need" that, but if I'm not reading a book or writing in a journal on my way to bed, or having some other "activity" to do, then the nothingness WANTS to fill that void with content.
It feels weird to say because I think of myself as having a robust inner life, but I don't express myself terribly often (this is a comment of rare depth, responding very much to the challenge you laid down of figuring out what I really think), and I think that leads me to a place of always wanting to consume, because that's what I do. And it leads to feeling like doing anything else is taking time away from what I "do", which is consume ideas/content. My new roommates are really into cooking and cleaning and maintaining our home in a way I've never been and it's really starting to influence my understanding of what time is for, which feels intense to say but really in line with where this idea is leading me - I'm responding to new stimuli that are curious and not specifically to do with me and my idea of myself and it's really re-invigorating and improving my life - producing a little bit of that "hey siri, where's the nearest body of water" effect.
Thanks so much for the food for thought - this is exactly the kind of video that keeps me bopping around your channel. Sometimes I want to hear about color theory, sometimes I want my skull peeled back and poked around in :)

    1. Hunger for flattery, ego, pandering, reassurance that it's fine to stay ignorant in our cocoons: spot on!
    2. The human brain is a bundle of contradictions. Yes, we crave authenticity and connection. But we also love getting swept up in narratives, even when it requires that we turn a blind eye to our powers of observation, skepticism, and facts we wish weren't true. Families live for decades in denial about a loved one who does harm. Reality shows depend on audiences buying into a false belief that the drama is real and that we "know" these people. It's scripted. We don't know these people. (Even now that we've seen enough post-airing updates, we willfully play along with the scripts anyway, as with Santa Claus.)
In another example, this election cycle was heavily about "feels" instead of facts that we know or could easily verify - if we wanted to. We didn't. We want to be validated, more than we want the truth. We want to believe we have special insight into what's "really" happening. We claim to want earnestness in our elected leaders - and yet when a knowledgeable, sincere speaker seems boring/buzzkill-y compared to people selling a cooler narrative, we reject the boring one. We must like being duped. "Professors" like Harold Hill flourish to this day. And each time the truth comes out later, we still feel entitled to righteous indignation.
I vaguely remember when news outlets switched from taglines like "the news" - meaning, summaries of confirmed facts on newsworthy developments - to phrases like, "News that matter to *you!!!*" It normalized a trend to ignore news that didn't immediately hurt us, personally. A shockingly low level of general information became acceptable, even among the well educated. Slow-developing disasters catch us off-guard. We resist the effort of asking questions, remembering and learning.
It didn't help that popular culture (maybe one of the negative legacies of the mostly positive Oprah) transferred psychological counseling terms to uses where they didn't apply. We began to treat the words "feel" and "know" as if they're equally valid - in all contexts. But "I feel like" isn't equally OK in science, history and current events. Opinions aren't facts. Perhaps this indifference to chasing down facts even when they lead to uneasy discoveries, emerged just before Stephen Colbert coined the word, "Truthiness." 19 years, yikes. Before Millennials can clearly remember what normal news felt like. (Imperfect and blind-spotty as news was, accuracy was the yardstick by which a news source was judged.)
    2. The grim stuff you've laid out is what social media designers deliberately built in, using the planet's most sophisticated tools from psychology, neurology and engineering. The motivators, the attention magnets, the simulation of authenticity, the "feed". All of it. To make sure they wouldn't be stopped before the platforms became ubiquitous, they produced questionable research, swore "commitment" to protecting our youth and civic space from lies and abuse. And poured enormous sums onto our political classes to make sure the wizard would stay safely behind the curtain. Mission accomplished.
    3. Whenever an influencer tells the camera, "I wouldn't accept this sponsorship if I didn't honestly love this brand," those words make me instantly disbelieve it. Because AI and talented sales persons have perfected the simulation of authenticity. The "hook" words and gestures can be studied and mimicked. There's no way for a viewer to fact-check. It takes years and my own testing for me to have any faith in an incentivized creator's words.
I accept that making a channel viable requires PR merchandise and sponsorships, but the tension bred by a conflict of interest can't be eliminated. It takes constant vigilance. I tend to skim over the sponsorship portions, except perhaps when creators spell out that they bought (some of) those products with their own money long before the brand proposed a sponsorship. Example. Except for the giant channels, beauty creators can't possibly afford to buy 5 LED masks to review. But they can say, "When I bought my Brand XYZ mask at a Sephora sale 18 months ago, I researched several brands and this seemed like the best price/feature combination at that time. I've updated my research, and while I still like mine it seems like Brand B and Brand C look very comparable on paper. Brand C and F came to me in PR. Here are some differences that might steer your choices."
    6. This Grinch wishes you happy holidays anyway.

Yesterday or the day before I was very aware of the dopamine need, I kept scrolling and changing the tv channel and… NOTHING! it was the perfect moment to stop and just look around and ground. 12:34 💥…when you said, “growth is incredibly unpredictable”, I was like, “ooochy ouchy mouchy…🥵”. So so true…when we grow and aren’t paying attention we tend to not learn and just be shocked that things have changed around us when in fact we changed too. What a mess we have made of this all. I’ve come to realize that sincerity is just about the best thing I see in all beings…it makes me laugh, it gives me hope, it makes me so proud and in awe…but it also makes me so so sad when I recognize a sincere lack of curiosity in us humans (self included)…as it is heartbreaking, especially since the consequences are literally life and death. Thank you for your content…I am boycotting most of the companies you review but really enjoy your sincere synthesis of color, texture and delivery 🙏☺️

I'm pretty new to your channel, but I enjoyed this video and I'm glad you posted it. It feels like a lot of people sense this ennui and dissatisfaction with the internet; I've seen a growing amount of content about it. I've been thinking a lot about it, too.
There's something I've noticed in a lot of videos (and TikToks), and I'd like to share this with you and anyone reading. All this overstimulation eats up our dopamine, and leaves us feeling exhausted and crappy, even if all we did was scroll. A common thread in doomscrolling, whether it's about politics, or the manosphere, or moral panic... is panic. There's a sense of urgency and stress. Has anyone else noticed how high, and fast, creators' voices go in videos? It's not yelling, but it almost is. Imagine talking like that, or consuming such content, all day. That's exhausting!
I've found that in this video too. I've found it in the way I talk. This panic-talk riles me up, and probably everyone else, too. Then I just feel tired and crappy after that. Remember life before the internet? It was slower, and less angry. Ranting was the sign of a problem; it wasn't normal.
I hope everyone can be mindful of slowing down this season. It's just what the internet, and capitalism, doesn't want us to do.

Thanks for taking the time to illuminate us plebs. Some excellently relevant texts for a deeper understanding of the commercialization and commodification of the masses (yes, the masses, not the objects the masses save their hard earned pennies to purchase): Guy Debord's "Society of the Spectacle" and Walter Benjamin's "The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction." All there be brighter days ahead? Let's hope so - and let's do something about it. Be critical of the content you consume, the products you buy, how you use them, the waste you're contributing to, the people you surround yourself with, in the same way we are mindful of aging and body image.....it's all connected! We're all connected! The butterfly effect 🦋

Seemed like from 2020, media and subsequently, people, got increasingly more polarized, and now it kind of feels like people are living in different worlds with completely different truths. In this way, there are zero algorithms applying to me and I am in total control of what I watch. It is easy to do so: simply do no log on you tube or if you absolutely have to - for instance, to write a comment - set up your account to deactivate everything (search history, play history etc.).

I am so curious how you see one's wounds / traumas (one's need to escape / cope -- a feedback loop, like any addiction... it spirals whether it's from over watching content, over-purchasing, etc.) fits into your thoughts shared in today's video. I kept wondering about how maybe curiosity could have actually become the heart type of pain - and the driving force of escapism in this way, as opposed to the "stretching the brain" type of struggle.... that actually stimulates and feels good once you start the chase.

I was just about to talk about the manosphere and how our desire for curiosity plays into that but you just got there! It’s hard, because we see people like Andrew Tate say crazy things, but he will keep a grain of truth in there, like the fact that many young men feel unsatisfied with their lives, to catch their attention. People have this isolated and lonely feeling so they start listening to Tate, and only Tate (or people like him as the algorithm feeds this content to you),
and over time they’ve been incremented into crazyville. It’s so heartbreaking when you knew someone smart and kind and then you see them again and they are in delulu land. It’s actually dangerous.
I’ve been loving your videos like this. The one about how Gen z needs to label everything was also very thought provoking.

I literally wrote a list this morning about me and the internet. How it affects my life, my relationship with myself and others. Am I content being spoon fed whatever the algorithm spits out. What do I do the fill the space that the habit of the internet has become? Oh, there's more, plenty more, like exercise, blah, blah, blah but mostly it was about, Is this who I am and am I content with that. Obviously not, but sometimes you just gotta write down those bigger questions about defining your own self and your purpose.
