Looks great! John Mayall was a skilled graphic designer as well as a great musician and designed all the album covers by himself [at least in the beginning], ”A Hard Road” being one of them. John Mayall writes about this cover in the ”Starart” book by Debby Chesher [1979], a book covering a couple of musicians art life. Mayall writes: ”This is the only painting I did for an album cover. To do it I had one of the Decca photographers take these shots, then I just picked out a composite, scaled it and put it into color. Left to right is Peter Green, John McVie, Aynsley Dunbar and myself. I did John first and think he is very well captured. I was also fairly pleased with Peter, but then I got to myself and found that very hard, so I was never quite sure about that one. Aynsley was the one hade the most trouble with, I just kept going over it and over it. I guess in looking back now, it looks like him but it’s not as good as Peter and John.” The original painting was done in gouache 20” x 12”. Most likely turned into ashes in the devastating bush fire that totally destroyed John Mayall’s house in Laurel Canyon, California, in 1979. A great album it is too.
@@jimwood1968CDcollectorCAVE He really did. Every time I saw a John Mayall concert he would turn to his musicians during a song with great expectations in his facial expression; Now show me! I'm eager to see what you're gonna do with your part! And the musicians loved him for it.
It's not from a box set. It's one of at least 7 different albums by different artists on the Blues En Vinilo series by Planet DeAgostini. The same people have released various reissues with booklets. They did a part works of all The Beatles albums including some that were not on vinyl previously.
@@jimwood1968CDcollectorCAVE I just looked online. Discogs lists the 80s vinyl box set which is from 1981. 12 vinyl albums comprising of 10 studio albums plus 2 rarities albums. Average cheapest prices now around £170 - £180.
That’s a really good album Jim - the DeAgonsti did a blues vinyl series in Italy a few years back which is where these have turned up from when Jobn died - sound ok to me !! ❤

Thankyou sooooooooooo much for this fascinating information which I had no idea of this. He opened the door selflessly for so many musicians.

Thanks Bob., Back in the 80s when I lived in Watford a record shop had a big vinyl box of John's Decca years. Never seen it since so I wondered.
