- Documentarian Ken Burns and scholar Henry Louis Gates, Jr., join together to discuss the prevailing political fault line in the US: race. In this illuminating and cogent exchange, they examine why race is critical to their understanding of America and their work-and how, as a nation, we deal with race today. Their discussion is complemented with clips from Jackie Robinson, Burns' forthcoming epic about the impact and legacy of the first black baseball player to play in the major leagues, and Black America Since MLK: And Still I Rise, Gates' chronicle of the civil rights movement culminating in the election of Obama. (Both films are scheduled to premiere on PBS in 2016.)
Both figures have explored how race is part of the American fabric in their work. Burns’ landmark Emmy Award-winning television series The Civil War and Gates’ unprecedented four-part series African American Lives explore not just the role African-Americans have played throughout our history, but also how race, conceptions of race, and ideas about freedom and independence influence our politics and policies. They trace the historical significance of race from abolitionism to civil rights to the war on poverty-and consider what it means to have an African-American president.

2 inspirational men who are fighting for justice and equality. I learn from Kens documentaries, which are spectacular. Every time HLG speaks, I learn something new. Both have made such positive contributions to humanity.

Ken Burns is amazing, he really understands sociology and culture. Very skilled at expressing fine points of the human experience. HLG Jr is a great scholar and it's great to see him here discussing this. My mother remembers that horrible time during segregation. Never again!

In light of the death of George Floyd and the subsequent protests, examples of police brutality and the behavior of the President, it would be very interesting to bring these men together with Michel Martin for a follow-up discussion.

Very good conversation involving two men who have done the work and brought it to our doorsteps. I pray for this country and I'm so hurt with the stain of racism. Toni Morrison said it best " if you can only be tall while someone is on their knees then you have a problem and white folks have a serious problem and they should do something about their fears and treatment of others. The power structure in our society allows this to happen. They use this while they are planning their next move. Not all white people are bad .. and not all black People are bad.... majority of people like each other. The media plays a huge part in sensationalizing race. I'm sick and tired of the overall pain that we have endured in this country . I don't wish this on anybody not even my worst enemies. I'm optimistic that things will get better and I hope the good people continue to fight for the nation. Blacks and whites are cousins through slavery. If someone is your cousin , you don't hate them you love them and wish them well in life. We always try to get along because we don't have the power to change the hearts of many whites . But now I think black People have to unite together and build a nation inside a nation . Similarly like the Jews and Asian ... we have to build within and educate ourself and our children. Again , great show and I learned a lot from these two distinguished gentlemen .... in fact, I'm searching now on Netflix for their movies. Good luck to the host. She did a great job with showing their body of work.

It's horrendous that in this century we are still debating things like this, the fact that "some" people think "black" people are not at the same level as they are,be it education,cultural,etc etc it's just rubish, just the same with immigration. For these horrible things to be erased they depend not just on government trying to shape us, but from us as individuals, we have to say as humans this is not right, children do not see things like this,its us as individuals, be against injustice, if you were a docile dog being hit everyday wouldn't you as well bite? I am from Portugal and we have a voice.... still, but we protect people when we see they need justice,no matter their "colour". Thanks so much for making this conversation available to me. The window to new views is always open and I do believe my own perspective is further enhanced by this. Racism is wholly Institutionalized throughout America, as are, from my experience, misogyny and No separation of church and state, taxation without representation (no choice about our tax money and who doesn't fear the IRS including its own employees?). These are as much The System as capitalism itself.

Rahim, I couldn't agree with you more. Africa is ever changing and despite bias American news media, going through many positive transitions for many African nations. I feel those particular documentaries on Africa's great civilizations would only help to reinforce pride amongst all indigenous Africans.
The long devastating effects European conquest, colonialism and racism have had such a painful impact on the beautiful peoples of Africa, African-Americans and the entire Black diaspora.
Even Asia and Latin America has felt it's effects.
It is time for everyone of the diaspora to put aside our petty differences of colorism, arrogance and self inslaved thinking and unite. Learn together, work together and begin the journey of healing and reconciliation.
This is what I try and instill in my children, you have a responsibilty to your race, they try and dovode us, they make black police men feel as if you are better than them or they are lower than you and it is simply not true no one is better than anyone, some people have different upbringings, but as a race we are responsible for each other and then after that as a human race we are responsible for holding each other accountable

Great documentary but why is it so difficult for African Descendants of Slavery to receive reparations for all of the oppression, atrocities committed against our people.All of the evidence is stored in museum , court records and books. It seems that others are profiting from ADOS miseries.

a, mark territory like branding,
b. allow sexual behavior of a bigoted lifestyle where wives except male perversions rather than protesting the cheating on the legal bond of marriage.
c. create economic conditions feeding 2 as a result 'anti-abortion' methods that will insure generations of cheap labor struggling with the laws intended on creating the institution to begin with.

My Fairchild side never was involved with slavery. We were Loyalists, Canadians, and were involved in the Union during the Civil War.

Ken Burns probably isn't going to make a documentary about hip-hop. He's not so interested the Black American experience post 1970.
I wish Ken or someone would have the fortitude and wisdom to tell of how hip hop, rap and the like have added to the denigration of a people. Lots started to creatively voice the plight of a segment of population and later became( by African American) about the glorification of violence and disrespect toward women. Women, who by the way willingly participate in their own humiliation.

American Indians were almost Euthanized by Columbus, their children made slaves. Then over and over again until the Europeans overtook the whole land to the West Coast. This was their land. The arrogance of the white man 100 years ago and all the way back for thousands of years all over the world as they came into Africa and took their land also. I am a white woman no American Indian or anything but white in me. (Sadly ...I had hoped for some mix.) Did the DNA.. etc. I just hate the history of the some of the white men of this earth, taking anything just because he was white. My only saving Grace is none of our ancestors participated in these horrors and believed In Equality. I love the story of Wilberforce who ended the English Slave Trade and wrote the song 'Amazing Grace'. So interested in it all. I loved General Powell and Dr.Ben Carsen of course what Martin Luther did and all the music that has come from all the beautiful people of color and all the Amazing Black Women who have gone out of the box. So inspirational the spirit of it all! Bravo. Thank you for making all of us take note of the facts for this is unfortunately the History of our America and it can t be ignored. It must be understood to gain unity through more of an educated, sympathetic, realistic understanding of history and make this country United and remain standing. This country can make a difference Globally if understood well. This should be a bi-partisant country or Independant. I am Independant and no one should be persecuted for the private way that they vote. Thank you for all your doing. Its dividing the country too much.
Amazing Grace was written by John Newton an English former slave trader. He became a lyricist and minister. Your post was beautiful. You are not responsible for slavery or its aftermath of terrorism, Jim Crow, and systematic discrimination into the seventies and beyond. But all America benefited from what slavery produced. All you can do is share views with people who will listen.

The Native American conversation is a DIFFERENT conversation and your attempt to conflate these two separate tragedies in American history speaks to a general unwillingness of most white Americans to have a conversation dedicated to the Black American experience and what must be done to right that wrong, in so far as it can be righted. Humans first evolved in Africa, and much of human evolution occurred on that continent. The fossils of early humans who lived between 6 and 2 million years ago come entirely from Africa. Most scientists currently recognize some 15 to 20 different species of early humans.

I would add something to Dr. Gates' statement that many white Americans are afraid, which I agree with. I would say that many white Americans are afraid that, without the protection of the myth of white supremacy, others will realize that they are just mediorcre, average. Not better than, but, God forbid, less intelligent than, less capable than, some black people. In our heart of hearts, we all - everyone, no matter what our "race" - know where we stand in the pecking order of intelligence, looks, economics, the force of our personailties, etc. And for the vast majority of us, we realize there are folks who are more gifted with these attributes than we are, and there are folks who are less gifted. So imagine you're one of these mediocre white folks, but you feel badly about who you are. If you take away the one buffer out there that can make you feel a little better about yourself - the notion of white supremacy - you just have to face the truth about yourself. I think for some people that's just the last straw, and they can't take it. Now add to this that you don't have to actually be mediocre to feel badly about yourself. You can be good looking, highly intelligent, and rich and still have a very low opinion of yourself. I think people who want to "make America great again" and are afraid, want to hang onto white supremacy, sexism, xenophobia, etc. because they can't accept themselves as they are at a very deep level.

Black Native Americans have been present in Oklahoma since the 1820s, when the federal government forced members of the Five Civilized Tribes to relocate from the American Southeast to Indian Territory, which is now Oklahoma. Some tribes brought African American slaves with them, and the slaves were also given land because they had native American ancestry. Indian Territory established African American slavery in the 1830s, with some nations including both enslaved blacks and small numbers of free African Americans

I understand some people thoughts to why Native Americans aren't brought up and documented on as much...that that was the original sin of America. Well simply put i guess there isn't enough info due to whitewashing or the fact that they although mostly living isolated and on reservations, they aren't killed and targeted by the people of authority to be done away with like we are dogs even til this day.....and a side note. We all have an ethnic background that tells stories of struggle and survival, and a history one can be proud of. But, Tee, I hear lots of African Americans talking about "blackness." Skin color is the way the powerful divide us. My Southern Italian ancestors were considered near African, and my grandfather's village was razed, women and girls raped and murdered, with thousands of its citizens wiped out, all for "unification." They came here to be lynched and denied jobs, and a few were even put in internment camps with the Japanese, as many lost there livelihood on the West Coast at the onset of WWII, due to being considered "enemy aliens." If everyone searched their ancestry, we would find that we all share the pain of being human.
