@@locarno1542 kind of hard to answer that, depends on a whole lot of things. Technically just about any T-72 model could defeat a Leo, as long as it hits the right spot from the right range at the right angle. I wouldn't say there is any model (that has currently been seen in service) that would beat a Leo 100% of the time. One flaw with the Leo is it has some ammo stowage in the crew compartment so if that gets hit or a fire is started in the tank you're done for.

If Im not mistaken the M variants were the ones without the composite filler as they were the "export" models. At least the ones we met in Iraq were. Also kvarc is not a name of an armor package, its literally just how quartz is spelled in Russian.

Correction about ammunition types: t72 never used hesh ammo, heat is also extremely rare, main rounds are high-explosive fragmentation and various types of apfsds
After the explosive development of tank building during World War II, it is so strange to see that projects of tanks that are 50 years old (Т-64А, Т-72) or 40 years old like Abrams are still actively used in modern wars. Imagine, it's as if M4 Sherman with thermal camera and ERA was in Desert Storm or Mark 5 in the Battle of Saigon.
Very detailed description of auto-loader mechanism however you have missed one important thing. When crew performing ammunition replenishment each round of ammunition must be coded into the computer (bit primitive I have to admit). Later when target is identified, the gunner must select appropriate type of ammunition before cannon gets reloaded.
T-64's autoloader used a system where a raised stud would trip a microswitch to tell the autoloader what kind of ammunition was in a particular tray, so you'd have to set the stud in the correct position for the loaded round as you replenished the carousel. I'm not familiar enough with the T-72's system to say if it was doing something similar, but I wouldn't be surprised - it wasn't much newer of a design and if the Soviets could make something work through oldschool electromechanical means, they would.
A couple of points...it's not a syncro box, it's an epicyclic transmission. It has two of them laft and right, the selector is a master that will shift each box to the same gear set, the steering levers are slaves that allow each individual box to be down selected giving the steering radius. As in if you are in first (extreme low) pulling the left lever applies the left track brake, when in 2nd pulling the left lever first shifts in to extreme low then a further pull applies the brake (via an hydraulic booster run off of the PTO on the engine) so in top gear (7th) pulling the left lever incrementally will shift the left tranussion through all 6 lower speed then apply the brake ..hence how T72's drift so well. This gives a great number of dedicated steering radii at various speeds and makes the tank highly manoeuvrable, more so than western tanks that use double and triple differential steering. Second point the "clutch" pedal does not actuate a conventional clutch,as there is no clutch in the system, but is an hydraulic "dump". It actuates a spool that circulates the hydraulic fluid relieving the pressure in the transmission so none of the epicyclic gearsets are engaged (this is so done by wet clutch sets but not conventional as previously stated.) Awesome video by the way I have subscribed to the channel as armour is my thing! Hope you are well and thankyou for your content! Very nice review. Typically on youtube you only see jerks who hate everything Soviet / Russian and use your time to push some biased BS. T-72 is a really amazingly engineered vehicle with probably the best mix of performance, ergonomics, and cost. Everything simply makes sense, and truly stood the test of time despite Western propaganda against it. BTW, my experience with T-72 in terms of sitting position is kind of opposite: I'm 6'5" and can easily fit in either commander or gunner position. However there is no way for me to fit in driver's position and close the hatch, LOL
Bruh the ergonomics are ass, western tanks are limousones in comparison. Are you sure you're 6'5? I'm 6'3 and I fit just right in the turret, but it's nightmarishly narrow. Just squeezing through that hatch is difficult, you have to sort of wiggle in like an eel.

The T-72 is also known as the Cosmonaut Maker as it routinely sends its turret and crew into space when the ammunition stores go off after being hit, especially in top-down attacks.
If a round successfully pierces the armour just how dead would you like to be ? Understand that when a round breeches the armour it doesn't go bang. It rattles around inside chopping everything "fleshy" up like a blender. ie: you're already non human regardless if any ammo blows up as well. Go read some old WW2 books. Turrets regularly blew off hit tanks.

Really great. It would be interesting to show a cutaway of composite armor, even if it
is just duplicated in plywood, and not real armor since that might be hard to find.
This just made my morning and I look forward to more videos.
there is a cut away of a 70s era main battel tank at the War Museum in Ottawa, can't remember if it is a T-72 , but its pretty close.
I’m sure the Ukrainians could give you all sorts of cutaways of the T72 armor.
War Thunder Forums has cutaways. Can't link on YT
"t-72 armor cutaway turret" give you an image of a cutaway T72 turret look at the tone with blue and yellow paint. Many of the hits but not the good turret image is from "Below The Turret Ring" where you can see side view of the glacis armor. The image is a stack of 4 glacis plates so a bit confusing before you realize that.

@@locarno1542 kind of hard to answer that, depends on a whole lot of things.

Yes, it is
The M variant does have composite armor in the hull front but lacks any composite in the turret.
The M1 variant has 16mm of high-hardness steel plate added onto the hull front, and includes composite armor in the turret front.
I’ve been wondering about the armour and it’s composition for years. Very glad to have found this video. Cheers!
The composition actually varies depending on the model, for reference, the T-72b uses NERA/reflexive plates sandwiches between cast steel.

Its the price man. Weapons have become insanely expensive. The new Abrams X and T-14 will likely never be used until we get Abrams X3 and T-30.
The man is knowledgeable and offers valuable insights. He clearly possesses expertise in the subject matter.👍👍
Maybe you want to hug the ammo with an autoloader and thats why the turrets blowup.
I can listen this guy talking about tanks all day, thank you.
