Hollywood underestimates teens so much. They seem to think that teenagers will settle for mediocrity (or in this case, less than mediocre). But in reality teenagers do have an appreciation for good filmmaking and plot lines. I’m not saying all teen films have to be deep in order for them to be good. I just think that if Hollywood actually realised there’s more depth to teens than just TikTok they could actually create something good. I’ve also noticed Hollywood LOVES to generalise teenagers because I can guarantee you 90% of teenagers do not behave like this.

I liked She's all that for reasons that have nothing to do with the plot: Zach getting comfortable on stage and improvising, Laney's makeover being kind of unusual (shorter hair, she being presented as "not improved but different" -which is a cop-out but still-, "Kiss me" in the background), the allusion to sexual assaults between friends and peers, the fact that Zach's mean popular friends are actually mostly nice people. I don't know, it used a comfortable formula in a very unusual way, I liked that. I didn't see He's all that, but yes, those outfits look very outdated and uninteresting. Also I don't love the premise, I find that in general movies that want to be young and cool and up-to date overuse the topic of social media, as if they weren't a mean to an end (reaching people) but a devilish instrument that got hold of children's lives.

There seemed to be nothing to Addison's character. Having her talk about the pressure of maintaining a perfect, popular image would have actually made sense as a way to connect with someone who has arguably chosen to portray himself in a way that marks him as "different" from his peers. We could have had some conversations about some real issues here!

How about we bring fresh, new designers now? i get it, they did an amazing job back then, but they continue to dress characters that are supposed to be trendsetters like some main character from a DCOM from 2012. It's time for a change.

@Chrissy 123 nah those older movies hold up. In this example She’s All That had light years better production, performances, script & wardrobe than He’s All That. Despite being almost 2 decades older, the originally looks higher budget. They’re making movies cheap & fast to turn a quick buck. Quality matters less when you don’t have to worry about movie ticket and dvd sales to make a profit on the movie.

It’s totally possible to live in different worlds in terms of hobbies or interests and fall in love with each other BUT without cutting a rocker’s hair and without saying that the girl who likes to play with make up looks better without it (???) you know what I mean? I think that especially young teens should be encouraged in what makes them unique/ what they like and not giving up one’s identity or character traits for a significant other. Back in the days when I was a teen I would have loved a movie who taught me this. Instead, in every movie the punk/alternative/artsy girl/guy is the weirdo who’s appearance needs to be changed…

She’s all that isn’t great or special, but I always thought the reason Laney was not popular was her attitude, which was appalling, really, she was rude to everyone with no reason. The makeover was not so bad, they tried a little, with the “not improved, but new”. And I liked that Zach had an arc and actually learned and evolved personally through his friendship with Laney. Did not even consider watching the new one. Thanks for the taking one for the team, Mina, great video!

    • @SachaO-C
      @SachaO-C 2 года назад +3

Agreed! I think Laney’s ‘character arc’ was her putting her walls down and being overall less judgy of the people who she didn’t initially hang out with or associate herself with … I think she discovered that she had a preconception of everyone before she actually got to know them, perhaps this was formed from years of not ‘fitting in’ and maybe being made fun of for being antisocial which led to her overall bitter presence and attitude towards her fellow peers. This is just a little mind ramble of some interesting concepts to think about, happy to hear other’s opinions/ perspective on the characters too! :)

I agree on Mina's point on the ending. I kinda think it was off too when I finished watching it how she ditched college to travel the world (frankly, if she HAD money to travel the world, why didn't she just use that money for college). A better ending would have been her finding another sponsor for funds and encouraging Cameron to take photography in college or something and travel during spring breaks. They would probably get other PRs with Padgett's social media influence and Cameron's photography skills. (but hey what do I know XD)
(ps. not saying it's really really bad to not go to college ok just agreeing on mina's take on 16:19 how it wasn't really a good message for teens out there)

Why do they insist on dressing these characters like 30 yr olds. First the fate saga and now this.
These are supposed to be teenagers or young adults. Let them wear something fun. The current fashion trends are nowhere to be seen, which just doesn't make any sense.

It baffles me that the guy who made Mean Girls directed this. He was so promising, what happened?
The ex-boyfriend looks like something out of a 2005 movie.
To be pretty honest Cameron is quite hot even before the transformation - or maybe I just have a weird taste
And I get why they cast Rachael Leigh Cook and Matthew Lillard in this movie but is so... tacky, obvious and uninspired. I'd rather have members of the original cast playing the same characters again, in another context, as if it was almost a direct sequel, than playing other characters.

She's All That is definitely a movie of my youth; one of those movies I wanted to see in theaters but my mom wouldn't let me. I recently re-watched it alongside Drunk Feminist Films and there are definitely, DEFINITELY moments that do not hold up, and it generally is one of the lower tier teen rom coms of its time. (10 Things I Hate About You being the superior doing-this-for-money movie!) However, I did really love the chemistry between the two leads, & the lower stakes are definitely not as contrived.
The new one just doesn't seem to do, well, anything, especially with the main premise being the exact opposite of what I was expecting. But I really appreciated your comments on the fashion! The main character did look a little weirdly out-of-place in terms of her clothing & the original is just pure late-90s trash in a way that brings back so, so many memories.

Hi Ms Mina I absolutely love how you research everything so well. AND ACCURATELY, with relevance to current "era" if we may say. Watching you is like delightfully reading a solid piece of article, but with aesthetics. Most of all, your confidence to carefully balance out the "pros" and " cons" and add your own analysis CONFIDENTLY but with respect. You are so eloquent at what you're doing. I cannot believe you are doing this professionally. What a treat to watch you. Just wow. Thank you for gracing the internet !!!!! ^_^

Just give a chance to young script writers, they would KILL for an opportunity to produce a show or a movie for Netflix. And I'm sure that they WILL get job done so much better
