    A late friend of mine had an affair with Mr. Cagney when she worked on his horse farm. She was 18 and he was 60. Nowadays we'd say he took advantage of her. She said he was irresistible and she never bore him any ill will.

    As a child in the 1950's, I'd often hear my parents and relatives talk about James Cagney. If I remember correctly, somewhere around age 10-12 my dad and I watched "Angels With Dirty Faces" on TV. I believe it dealt a young adult group commiting various crimes with Cagney, the tough guy head of the group, ending up going to the electric chair at the end. It made me think twice about doing anything criminal and scared scared the hell out of me. As I got a little older, I believe Cagney was pretty much done with acting (this would have been the later 1960's). He's life story seems remarkable when I think about some of the actors and entertainers over the past 20 years. Having seen other films of his as I got older, I can only say he was an intelligent, honest, and remarkable man who never forgot where he came from. He was nothing like some of the films he did; a very humble man at best.

      Cagney retired from acting in 1961 ("One, Two, Three" was his last career movie), but he came out of retirement to star in "Ragtime" in 1981. That was his last theatrical release movie.

    James Cagney was one of the all-time greats, and he could do it all and make it look effortless and, boy, could he dance and towards his latter days, he was a great chat-show guest here in the UK.

    A nice salute to JC; but with a few factual problems and some facts and mentions made without previous foundational preparations. For two examples, the director Raoul Walsh was mentioned only as "Walsh" and it was mentioned in the presentation that JC went to work in a show in the role of a chorus girl in 1911 (which would have been at age 11 or 12), but this happened years later. But the clips and stills are well selected and include a few that are seldom seen in other presentations. The voice-over is a little creepy, but offered at a good pace. Overall this is a good introduction to Cagney.

    Never saw him give less than a good, solid performance. Usually he was mesmerizing on the screen. The guy could play comedy, drama, and even musicals. And boy what a hoofer. Never heard a bad word against him either, no bad scandals or Hollywood escapades. Good by Mr. Cagney, you made it to the "Top of the World, Ma."

    The most impressive thing I remember about JC is that he never divorced (which is rare in Hollywood). He told the interviewer, "people expect too much" when asked about his secret to staying married to his wife Frances for 64 years until his death in 1986.

    Wow! Cagney was such an iconic actor and dancer! He was so amazing! It's too bad this compilation and story of his life is so badly put together! The timeline is completely messed up and jumps back and forth and leaves out important details while glossing over others. The story of James Cagney's life deserves better!

    When Cagney came to Ireland to do Shake hands with the devil, They wouldn't let him play because of his gangster films ,they made up a lame excuse about poor weather. The Gaiety playhouse felt Jimmy's name would tarnish its image, They should have welcomed him with open arms. It would have also been very good for the Gaiety for James Cagney to perform there.

    Cagney was born in1899! This video says that in 1911, he was working in a department store??? At 12 years old??? Where he was discovered as a potential dancer!!! He auditioned to be in a show as a dancing sailor??? A 12 years old!!! Who the hell makes up this BS???

    • @gmaureen
      @gmaureen 5 месяцев назад

      Most kids worked in those days, unless the family was rich, there were no laws against it. Kids worked to help put food on the table.
      Cagney initially learned to dance on the streets, he told about it in his autobiography, it was called "hoofing." Dancing was a way to spend time, compete with friends, and it didn't cost anything. No BS here, just a different day and time.
