The larger hexes were so you could use 28mm miniatures on the new map. Steve Jackson discussed this on the TFT forums while the Designer Edition was being planned. Warm regards, Rick.
Actually they printed two different covers in the first edition in 1977. I have the one with C. Bradley art, the one you show has Elizabeth Danforth’s art. Both depict a fight with a gargoyle, but Bradley’s has what appears to be a dwarf using sword and buckler, with an elven archer behind with arrow nocked, as well as a mustachioed halfling sneaking in on the gargoyle’s flank.
Old school edition has that unmatchable charisma atmosphere all over it. Truly love it. But this new reprinted edition has some very nice quality, which is of course awesome. Nice comparison!
Loved the video. Your copy of Melee is a first edition. I have the second edition, which I have, came in a very thin and flimsy box. The counters weren’t die cut you needed a craft knife to cut them out.
The Codex was WAY overpriced (it came out for $20 which was a lot in those days). I picked up 3 copies for $1 each in clearance. ;-) I then traded one copy to Steve Jackson, for a copy of Triplanetary! Best $1 I ever spent. However, it did do a Q&A and give a few new rules, so it was not simply an index. Warm regards, Rick.
Rick, your TFT videos are fantastic, your old TFT collection is better than mine, and I played in the 80s. On a side note I too have that GYGAX wall poster, gotta love that. My question for you is: Where on earth did you get that TFT Quest for the Silver Dragon wall poster? I'd kill for that, as well as your Martian Miniatures figures.
EBay! It was in a lot with another copy of the microgame of the same name. I ended up with two of the microgame because exactly, how am I going to NOT go after that poster!
Thanks for sharing. Again, one handed presentations are awkward and clumsy to watch. . . I hope you have someone to hold the camera on your next one. . .
Thanks so much for sharing about these games I played back in their original forms and am now so excited about their new incarnations. They are truly a "fantastic" blast from the past! I hope that is okay, and you don't mind getting a few more viewers. Adjusted for inflation the new version is better value. I'm still frustrated by the illusion rules. Illusions of Octopus men become much too powerful. Images always seemed like a waste of ST.
No kidding! Yeah, and I did it again with my latest unboxing also. And it wasn't even from a blade, it was a paper cut running my hand along along cardboard box!

Your enthusiasm is pretty great here.
Love the liz danforth illustrations on the original !

I like the old font better on the counters. The booklet for Melee looks more like an 80s steve jackson rule book.
Looks like a quality hardcover ITL with a sewn binding if I'm not mistaken...darn can't wait to get mine.
Back in the day, I came really close to stop playing AD&D, and switch to the Advanced settings.

@Mike Hill the second edition is the latest, right?
I caved in and bought it for one hundred quid. It's as good as the modern games by all acounts.
Thanks for this - I can’t wait to try it out!
Very cool. Not sure if I want the new version of melee and wizard or the casette style case version of melee and wizard.

I want that poster so much!
Great video, Rick. You're over on RPGGeek/BoardGameGeek, yes? You should post a link to it over there!
Great idea

Did your finger survive? :(
I'll be honest, without re-watching this vid I'm not sure what you are referring to I'm sorry. 😆
