When the 900 came out, magazine testers loved the acceleration but didn't like the small gas tank and opined about the bike's potential touring ability. When the insurance companies jacked up the rates Kawasaki introduced the ZL1000, with a bigger gas tank and a seat designed for day trips. The insurance companies didn't buy it, and neither did the riders. They also made a ZL600, but survivors are pretty rare too. It's a shame, because the bike looks like it's capable of handling 500+ mile days with ease.
I have had one for years and love it. Absolutely great bikes. I think they are the best looking ZLs. I do want to get a 900, but they look considerably different. I am still looking for 1 horn cover.
Beautiful bike. Looking at purchasing one of these right now, was hoping you could answer a few questions about it. How long does it take to warm up on 50-60 degree day? I had an old CB750A and it took 10 minutes some days to get up to temp. And does it handle well? I read these really only like to go straight. And are parts tough to find? They only made these bikes for two years in the US, if I'm not mistaken.
They made only 2500 worldwide. Some of the mechanical parts were used on more than one model, but actual ZL parts can be hard to find if you can find them at all.
Went to my local shop in 1990 and test drove this bike ,brand new leftover, and wound up buying the new dr 650 same price 4000 out the door...What a mistake !!!

I don't know what you're hearing, but that that motor runs as smooth as silk.
