Making a Modern Medieval Girdle Book: Braiding with Leather Lace and Making Silver Corners

  • Girdle books were in the possession of monks and aristocrats in Medieval Europe.
    This type of binding provides portability, protection against unruly weather and some defense against theft. In addition to these purely utilitarian functions, in the past it was a symbol of status in society, as it implied wealth and literacy.
    In the video, I don't delve into all of the stages of making the book, since there is a lot of work with the leather braids and my father's silver work. I paid special attention these stages.
    You are welcome to see the first footage of my father's work and how he makes the silver corners for this little notebook.
    I hope you enjoy this short showcase of my work. Feel free to read this article with a few additional details for this particular book: www.iostopan.c...

      Haha and it would take me a lifetime to finish a book. I recently had a chat with a friend of mine who is a potter and he said how he has a lot of control over his craft, because he can gather the clay from the woods, make his own kiln, gather the firewood and so forth. But bookbinding is a new craft compared to pottery, dependent on the crafts of other people to exist. So yeah, I couldn't do everything, even though sometimes I wish I could.

    Hey,
    Hopefully some useful advice when using the lace maker.
    You can prepare you piece of leather a little better by rounding off the corners, you will be able to pull the lace out more consistently but the lace will be more consistent too!

    Stopan! How are you getting a leather pattern like that?! Its so beautiful. Are you using iron sulfate? Or oil or something? Its fantastic!

    • @Stopan
      @Stopan  5 лет назад +1

      Hello!
      I sprinkle the leather with potassium permangante to achieve this particular stain. I heard iron sulfate damages the leather excessively over time and haven't dared to try.
      Thanks for the kind words!

    And where do you find the leather for the cover ?

      I usually use hemp or jute cord. This particular leather I've bought from a local dealer but he doesn't offer it anymore, sadly. I've been purchasing most of my leather recently from www.harmatan.co.uk/leathers/leathers.html

    • @Stopan
      @Stopan  5 лет назад +1

      Thank you! I' not considering using vegan leather any time soon. Most of them are engineered, using petrochemicals and I find it ironic to use them over real leather for moral reasons. The ones that aren't based on petrochemicals really lack the qualities needed to make a proper binding. I source my leathers from small reputable tanneries and will continue to do business with them in the foreseeable future.
