It would be great if DAN would make a dive destination coverage map with no dive zones! Highlighting where places are needing improvement would cause those places to make improvements to get off the no dive list.

The problem is that imo, damn near every dive site outside of the US and maybe EU/Australia would be marked on that map. I think in this case it was as simple as DAN not understanding what they need to do for certain areas. If they offer you insurance to go there, it shouldn't be a no go zone...

Or at least start, the easier way, by saying "If you are in THIS region, the procedure is..."
Before DAN was born, I had the direct chamber phone numbers for every cilivian and mainly military chamber within 500 miles of my home grounds. Do that wherever I was, I had those numbers right on the front of my dive log. USCG helo would have been the most likely medevac at that time.

If you’re really looking to ensure DAN does what it’s supposed to, do the following for us plebs that don’t have a following.
Accept accounts from DAN holders that have been failed and broadcast the incident.
Don’t be accepting of them not wanting to be recorded, that’s lack of accountability.
Don’t wear their garb and say “keep the policy, they have great ideas” since ideas don’t save lives.
“We made some mistakes” does don’t excuse their FAILURES. It wasn’t mistakes they made, they failed to act.

These dan videos are actually making me angry. I do not think dan handled this situation well at all. It is a emergency situation and dan should be reaching out to you throughout the whole ordeal. To me it seams like its the first time they have had to deal with an emergency. I’ve spent a lot of time working as a emt in the United States so I’m not sure how medical care works when out of country. But from what i know about insurance in the USA they should not be the ones setting up emergency care. They should come in after the care has been complete to help take care of the expenses. The medical doctor should be the one handling all medical care. The only exception i could think of it if dan had doctors that are experts in diving injuries are on standby to do a consultation if you are in a area where you typically sub par medical care. The only recommendation i have for you or anyone that goes through this is if you are not getting care call the closest us embassy and tell them you are having a medical emergency and they will not treat you until you come up with money. The embassy wants to protect their citizens and they are there for emergency’s.

First of all, I don’t think anybody would have thought of calling Dan. Secondly, they should have allowed the meeting to be recorded. That would have shown their willingness to engage in transparency.
Then, what about how slow down was to even consider getting you help. Remember how they said it would take 24 hours to get an ambulance or whatever it was?
That was absolutely right. I know that when I am told that my credit card is not accepted, I don’t even think about calling up the company and saying hey, Macy’s won’t take my card. Nobody does that. And I doubt that they would have been so quick to fix everything. We never have slow they were? I am not satisfied with this video at all.

Everything mentioned in this improvement plan is so common sense that it is shocking that DAN did not implemented it so far for such a well established agency. So either this agency is very badly managed or they don’t care about their primary goal which is saving us divers. So I am moving to Dive Assure. One might argue, we are not sure about what the other insurance providers worth? Well, I don’t see how that could be worse than the story which happened to Woody…

We did make some mistakes. But now we all know for sure not to automatically believe a provider that is telling you DAN won’t pay. DAN should be way more proactive to ensure that you get rescued, no matter what, and do the paperworks afterwards. Not to mention they did not communicate well enough and simply leave you, dying and couldn't think clearly, in the dark.

In the past 20 years, I've had two friends go through similar incidents as you, Woody. The difference was that they did not have the monetary means that you have. DAN never reimbursed them. Then, years later, you go through a similar incident, and all of a sudden, DAN wants to make it right and reimburses you... I'm not buying their bullshit! In fact, I'm stunned that you are and that you're promoting them. Your incident was the last straw. I was waiting for this video to see what DAN's reaction was and if they would take responsibility. Complete agree and I’m really sorry that happened to your friends. Are any of us really shocked that there are more cases like Woody’s? DAN literally almost killed more than one individual due to their negligence. Woody is alive because he had a good credit card. That’s it.
How many people has DAN killed that we don’t know about? How many have been severely injured because of them? This is DAN doing clean up, trying to look good because Dive Talk has a lot of subscribers and fans. They don’t actually care because if they did, these things wouldn’t have happened in the first place. I am big fans of Gus and Woody but I have consistently been shocked that they seem to put DAN on a pedestal and make it seem as though they are good guys because they’re trying to improve things (at least according to DAN). They only care now because they were finally exposed by people with a big enough audience. People’s lives are on the line, people have almost died because of their actions. I have a loved one who died because of negligence from medical professionals. It haunts me, and they are so powerful and protected my family can’t even get justice. 1) you were already through the wringer with DAN's paper work and have already felt like they didn't want to be super helpful and were more interested in covering their ass, just like a regular insurance company.
      2. Since DAN is behaving like a regular insurance company, the social norms in the USA is when your insurance isn't covering your emergency you say "welp good bye to my mortgage" and you pay out of pocket. I'm glad both of you have been able to use this incident to spur DAN to make changes they should have made years ago but didn't due to what I suspect is complacency. As long as a company like this is profitable, changes often won't be made unless something significant happens to threaten their bottom line. It is really a blessing something like this happened to Woody who has this platform to spur them to make these changes that I have no doubt will save lives. Hopefully DAN will continue to follow through. I do find it particularly infuriating though that DAN tried to shift the blame to Gus and Woody for not letting them know when the hospital said DAN wouldn't cover it. When in a stressful life-or-death situation, most people aren't going to dispute what the medical authorities are saying. They're going to give the credit card info and get the treatment needed. I'm glad Gus pushed back on that point, and hopefully the process will be better refined going forward.

      @nostromo526 4 месяца назад +2

“…as long as a company like this is profitable…”. I think this nails it. They don’t care about divers. They DO care about revenue. All this reaction is because they saw a negative revenue drop and needed to address it. The blame deflection tends to support this idea. If someone without a real platform other than, say, the BBB or random dive forums complained about an experience like this, DAN probably would give a flip and would make little to no changes.

Here's my issue....TIME IS OF THE ESSSENCE how can DAN expect you to haggle with a provider when you are in a life or death situation? If DAN cannot absolutely guarantee that treatment will be immediate and swift by the hospitals that have engaged in a contract with DAN then DAN needs to remove them as a provider of services. If Woody had of died DAN would be liable because they guaranteed service and service was not rendered immediately until "extortion" had taken place. I mean seriously, can you imagine a woman buddy trying to stand her ground and say no to the demand of a credit card all while under this enormous stress?. DAN needs to rethink their Services strategy otherwise a fatality is going to cost them dearly.

36:00 In some states, there is a diplomatic agreement when it comes to travel health insurance. I.e. what the deal is in between the nation to be visited and your nation. Like Japan (, Bahamas) and US, "you are fully medically insured on your visa up to costs of $2m, including legal fees" etc. So it's a "we got you, bro" card, including hospital transport home, via and financed by the ministry of foreign affairs.
Just to explain some Euro nations approach. A lot of nations are excluded from this coverage, for some particular or obvious reasons. But that's how it can work, and probably the source of the random comment(s) I haven't read.

I thought that it was good that it happened to you (not that I wish that on anyone) but you have a public presence and this only lead to positive changes and awareness for many divers, including people like myself who are rec divers and would otherwise take doctors comments as truth. Overall outcome was Woody is healthy and the dive community benefit. I bet other dive insurance companies are also going to have to make changes, not only DAN.

This whole story is another reminder of how good some of us have it. If this happens in the "good" countries, there is no DAN, no credit card, no papers to fill, you're just taken care of. Need a hyper pressure chamber? The closest is there, can we use an ambulance or do we need a copter? And thats it.

My point was if this happens to you in say the UK, or France, or here in Canada, you wouldnt need a 20k credit card to get care.
More precisely : As a Canadian, if I travel to the US, I just pay a small travel insurance fee and we're covered in the US. But the same insurance might not work as well in countries like the Bahamas.

The story that DAN gave you about the air ambulance doesn't make sense. Even if the clinic, the air ambulance, and the air port were in cahoots keeping the are fields lights off to prevent DAN from flying in, they still told you that it would take 24 hours to get you. However, the air ambulance the clinic found you was able to get you that night. This "scam" that DAN told you about doesn't even apply to the situation. So even if the clinic was getting a cut from the flight, DAN still would have had you sitting in Abaco till the next night with the bents (which DAN didn't even think you had). Even if this does happen in other situations they appear to be passing the buck on this one.

I think in situation where you have contacted DAN and there are some problems like no payment acceptanse, lack of transport from remote location to the chamber or similar, in this kind of situations DAN should (as part of insurance procedure), allocate body to help you with "locals" and resolve dispute. DAN should not expect the victim or their buddy to deal with all their own challenges. If DAN add this, this would be IMO really change gamer have a support from somebody who is not involved and did this many things before. All best

Think about it, Dan has been mostly unhelpful up to that point forcing you into self reliance, or at least reliant on the American Express card. If they’re not pulling through with solutions then why put your eggs in that basket? I apologize I don’t know each of your names off hand since I’m new here, but what if you didn’t have the second guy to rely on? What if you’re unconscious? What if you’re hit with we don’t accept payment while unconscious? Then what? They leave you on the stretcher to die? I feel like Dan has some obligation to make sure you’re going to be taken in with no bs and have their ducks in order because you might not have the second guy or an American Express card to bail you out.

It could just be physiological differences Woody was having making his deco less effective? Thank god Brian was with you.
