Your learning to far forward when you are doing the naruto run. The angle of the lean is based more on the speed you are running than how far you lean forward because if you watch in the anime when they are running that way it's because they are running at such extreme speeds the forward lean helps center you gravity while you run but when they run at close to a normal human speed they aren't leaned an extreme angle forward but a small angle maybe no more than a 15 degree angle.

Hey Love the show. About the anime style Running, one point I didn't see touched is: How fast does one need to go, for anime style running to be viable. This thought comes from riding. See when you ride a motorcycle, and you near triple digits speeds and your leaned forward (if on a naked bike or sports bike) the wind actually gives you some lift. There come the question how fast would you have to run at to be able to get enough lift to counter balance the forward lean? And thus be able to wholly concentrate just on moving the legs
tbh thought of it myself, but yeah, if you could move fast enough, you'd kinda be able to fall forward and sorta jump, ratehr than just sprint, really.
@@leeman27534 mmm, that would need to be going even faster than my original thought. Other than that, yeah, as he would just need to "jump" forward and let the air under the body keep your body up.

I grew up in a small town, (from around grade 3, till i moved out at 20 to start my own family) in a small 2 bedroom house, with baseboard electric heat. After a year, my dad installed a small woodstove for heat, in the snowy Bruce Peninsula/Georgian Bay/Lake Huron winter months, to offset the ridiculously high power bills. Between my parents, my brother and myself, the closest thing any of us had to what you described, was i had a severe nosebleed one day,. The doctors stopped it, suggested a kettle of water be kept on the stove to prevent the air drying out so much. And never had 'any' problem(s) again (aside from callouses and blisters from splitting wood) (the stove worked so well, at times we had open some windows a crack, because it was so warm in the house)
Just saying, I'd honestly love an episode about KITT from the 80's Knight Rider. I'm sure Kyle would do an amazing job at bringing up some interesting facts, to say the least. :))
I might be a bit late, but this is very important. As a much younger and dumber individual, I attempted an almost 90 degree bend leaning forward and doing the anime running. I ran for a grand total of five seconds at the most. I did not fall on my face, but instead suffered agonizing pain in my lower back for two weeks that OTC pain meds barely touched. I wasn't able to walk the next day after the pain set in, which took several hours to kick in after the fact. Edit: If this first part wasn't clear enough: Do not try to 'anime run'.
I have a modern wood stove insert. I use it as a supplement to my gas heat. With some planning, the fuel is free and I save $1000 a winter using wood fuel as my secondary source of heat. When gas prices (inevitably) rise, that savings will increase. Stoves have come a long way in the past few years with the EPA mandating the smoke emission limit for wood stoves drop from 4.5 grams of smoke per hour to 2.0 g/h in May of 2020. I love my stove and I take care to burn responsibly and clean. My 2 cents...

Many moons ago when I was a runner in high school we were taught that there's two different ways of running, depending on what you're trying to do. When you're running long distances, and your goal is more endurance over speed, you run so your foot hits the ground heel first, followed by your toes. When you're sprinting, and your goal is pure speed, you run on your toes alone; your heels never touch the ground. I don't remember the exact reason for this but I suspect it's because running on your toes gives you greater power but is also more exhausting: hence why you generally do it sprinting short distances but not long. At some point we actually noticed that one of the guys on my track/cross country teams in high school had actually, unconsciously, trained himself to run distances on his toes. This simple difference between how he ran & how the rest of us did made him one of our best distance runners on the team; only surpassed by one or two significantly more experienced runners.
Anime running is a thing not only easier to animating, but it sells of speed better, It feels more aerodynamic, the shape more elongated forwards, and having arms to look like they're staying behind while running, sells speed, no wonder Sonic the hedgehog also is animated running like this when he top speeds. It's efficient to show movement.

You know most fireplaces I have seen these days have a type of glass over the front to help deal with such things while also protecting as normal. Plus while it might be somewhat bad... Most people I know that have fireplaces don't have heating outside of the small ones you can buy from Walmart, and since they happen to live by/in the woods just chopping down wood is quite a bit cheaper. Supervillain Kyle: "I'm not trying to ruin your holidays." Also Supervillain Kyle (internally): "I'm going to ruin your holiday, muahahahahaha!!!!!" Seriously though, good advice; buuut in my opinion, propane stoves can be worse, especially if the guage measuring the fuel ends up freezing in place (say 40% full,) only for you to run out of propane in reality; and you end up with an excess buildup of gas in the line leading to the heater that doesn't dissipate properly. So even if you follow the instructions on lighting the pilot light to the letter, it'll only blow up in your face. So you end up burnt with metal fragments and other debris in the wounds/orifices on the face (God forbid it gets in ones eyes because of potential blindness,) making life a pain until you heal(Personal experience. Don't let this happen as it's not fun.)
I practiced this style of running when I was younger and tried to get good at it. This is what I've found with it. Whether it's faster or not is inconsequential. No matter how much I practiced with it, it tires you so quickly it's just not practical for more than a quick sprint. I did however find that it has better acceleration than normal sprinting. People's bodies naturally swing side to side when running. This is detrimental to this type of running, so you need to train to get rid of that before you get any benefit from it. One of the best advantages I've found is balance. Specifically, because you're not swinging your body back and forth, you can carry awkward loads without it upsetting your balance. Something like a backpack, groceries, or - since it's a fantasy trope anyway - some kind of weapon. And so if I were to design a character that used this style of running, I would use it in combat situations. This style allows you to keep a stance while moving, allowing for easier dashing attacks. That flies in the face of realism since dashing to someone with a sword is an easy way to get impaled, but it leads to a good flow in animation.
Will we get a because science footnotes with Dr.Moo? Seeing you both work together is amazing. Different ends of science specialists coming together to teach others.
Yo ! Good job as always ! I have to say though, I was sure someone was gonna speak up and I can't beleive this wasn't mentionned. In my humble opinion Naruto doesn't willingly put his arms behind his back while running, he simply let them ragdoll along his body and because he's running so fast the drag pushes them back. Like running with a scarf, it floats in the wind behind you as a byproduct of your speed, it doen't give you speed. ps : am frensh, sori if englich wierd
Thanks for the bit about wood stoves. I grew up in a house mostly heated by a wood stove (not recreationally), and I have always hated everything about it, from what it does to the airways, to having to bring it in from outside in the coldest days of winter.
Kyle, ya forgot one major point. Anime characters are super powered and are not meant to be taken literally in terms of speed. An anime characters in terms of real people usain bolt or nah, no matter how they run at the very least would look like that one Steve roger and falcon scene. "On your left! "
the key thought process behind the difference in running style comes from the locomotive mechanism. Standard running is based off of your levers (legs) which have the job of both holding your mass up, and moving it forward as well, which means the force they produce has to be divided between both goals. the whole process is very similar actually to wheeled propulsion when the basics are compared in forces applied. Anime running however uses a much different logic chain than standard cyclical motion. the idea here is based off direct piston propulsion, in that your legs do not move to a point in an arc and carry out both forces balanced, but instead move repeatedly in the same position as best as possible. the severe lean is because you are essentially "jumping" with every step, meaning with enough force, holding your mass up and propelling it forward is actually more of a combined effort than divided forces. and there is exactly one point that Olympic runners DO employ the basic IDEALS (not the form however) of anime running, and that is off of the starting block. when they use the foot holds to push off, they are directing as much of their force directly behind them as possible in order to gain an acceleration advantage. now imagine if you were able to do that start with every step, and you have the basic concept. as far as how that is possible... well it's not... the form required to execute it accurately would severely lower the friction between the runner and surface, meaning that more energy would be lost with every step, if you do not loose grip all together and slip. anime gets around this because of those things like "chakras" which shows them doing things like STANDING ON WALLS. this concept allows them to have their foot anchored with each step, meaning no friction is lost, so every step is a as efficient as it can be. the reason why you both hurt the way you did afterwards was because your body was compensating for a motion you FELT was wrong. because you assumed the action was going to fail, your body naturally tried to avoid dedicating to it as a safety mechanism. In the end, yes, this style of running is not sustainable in our current state because we do not have some kind of magic or holistic "science" negating the key issues of friction. But the base force does exist and is in use, we just do not train for it, nor have we seen levels of physical ability in humans that would allow for such action to be possible, as it would take extreme levels of strength and speed, needed to push off with one foot, and immediately bring that knee to your chest, while the other leg extends, landing in the same line, (relative to the body not the ground.)
I love all the nerdery that’s gotten up to around here, but I’m not gonna lie, I like this channel more because you play MTG, Kyle. I’ve been playing since ‘96 or so, but have never gotten into Commander. You should do an episode on the statistical and probabilistic differences (in terms of things like draw rate, mana curve, overall deck size, etc) between Commander and standard play. That’d be neat.
Modern high-efficiency fireplaces don't leak smoke into the room. They burn wood in sealed firebox that draw air in from the outside and send it back outside in a pipe parallel to the intake pipe.
@ 14:30 It's not supposed to be used for sprinting. A slower pace would drastically change your motion and negate the stress on your quads. What you're suggesting is like saying first gear on your car is slow and will ruin your car if you use it, and in both cases it is only true if you misuse the subject matter.
Hey Kyle! I just wanted to point something out here that lots of people seem to be confused about... The "Ninja Run" isn't meant to make you faster. There is an Asian Boss video with Kawakami Jinichi, who is the last living practitioner of Ninjutsu, where he explains a lot about being a ninja. In this video, they show him a lot of different things from Naruto, including the run. He said that the run was actually realistic, although exaggerated, and was previously referred to as "Namba Bashiri". Kawakami-dono then went on to explain that it was meant to conserve energy through a few things: 1) Leaning forward helps gravity carry you forward, meaning you spend an overall amount less energy to continue moving 2) Holding your arms back (or as Kawakami-dono put it, to the side) prevents any loss of energy from having to correct your body's swaying 3) Not exactly related to energy conservation, but he said it also helps make you quieter, because your legs are not kicking up and slamming down, and thus make less noise. Hope this helps clear some stuff up if anyone was confused!
One correction to your last counterpoint on the running style - yes, the leaning forward is very stressful on the quads, but the main issue there is that you're still applying full acceleration force in that pose as if you were normally running. The leaning forward and using your arms to counterbalance isn't about pumping your legs for the sake of acceleration; instead, you're letting gravity pull you forward, and you're pretty much running into that forward "fall" to stay upright, much the same motions you subconsciously perform to remain upright if tipped over unexpectedly. In theory, it takes less effort overall to do that, than to put all the forward force through your legs alone as was being done during the running tests...or, normal running in general. It's believed to have helped them cover longer distances by greatly reducing the amount of energy needed to keep their body in motion in the longer term, though, yes, such a form would still require conditioning. Just like any extended exercise, it's not something just anyone could up and perform on a whim. However, again, you seem to be arguing against it from the perspective of posing while running normally, as opposed to its actual utility which I haven't seen touched on in either video. While the first video was about its utility for speed, I was hoping here you would acknowledge the gravity aspect for strength/stamina conservation. This was pointed out in the ninja's video. Without gravity's assistance, this running style would not exist. I would be very curious to see how the gravity-falling aspect actually fares in legitimacy through testing geared towards stamina, though the test subjects would have to be experienced in this running style for best results.
The one thing I want to know the absolute most (aside from Kyle's most evil plan for world and universal domination) is what exactly that intro short song is saying, I can never decipher what its saying.
It definitely comes from a very US-centric point of view, where most of the country doesn’t get very cold. Or in some places actual Winter (with snow).
mrshmuga9 agreed. I believe (according to his bio) that he went to university in Wisconsin which can be very cold as well but I’ve lived my whole life where there aren’t “snow days” and schools must remain open despite severe weather. Hearing this from someone where on October 28th Los Angeles was literally 40°c warmer than where I am hits a nerve.
Loved the video! The thing with anime running is... that is based on chakra :/. Bear with me here :) It's been a long while since I saw the show but I recall part of the skills ninja had, was to channel chakra/energy to the feet (to walk on water, stick to surfaces, and explosive jumping) so I always assumed that when running or otherwise jumping off tree branches, as they do on each episode; was done applying chakra to feet/legs. Considering that, running would give you a speed boost on each step, not dissimilar to the impulse felt when a plane takes off... Imagine riding a turbo motor skateboard. You need to learn forward to decrease drag yes, but also to maintain balance against the force pushing you... So :) if each of your legs was a powerful spring and you'd want that force to move you forward (instead of up) you'd have to lean, to direct the force no?, keeping your arms back..because you'd waste energy countering drag and force. tl;dr: if your legs made explosive speed boosts, anime running would make sense :) (Man that was very nerdy drawing..need a Dyson sphere now) cheers
If you watched that real ninja run video, it's very different than one in Naruto. He didn't lean forward that much and he stuck his arms very close to his back. This form truly can save energy in the long run
Fireplaces have grates where you can screen all of the smoke and particles to keep them from going into your house. Also, if you keep your floo properly cleaned, all the smoke and paricles escape outside.
In the case of fireplaces, they are a necessary evil during blackouts. As an alternative, I did buy one of those butane heaters, which, in retrospect was a far better idea than either a propane or a kerosene heater. For one: No CO emissions. Butane heaters only put out CO in cases of running in an oxygen poor environment. The one I got has a ceramic heat spreader, and can also be converted into a stove if needed. And the fuel is fairly easy to score, every Asian market carries the canisters for use with butane tabletop stoves, and if you ever went through a full blown storm power outage, propane is usually the first to disappear from stores. Asian stores, however? They have pallets of butane.
You should make that 2 minute footnote a separate PSA video. I think it would reach a lot more people and help educate people to the danger of burning wood in your home
I appreciate I am late to the party here, but I learned this style of running in Japan under a gentleman called Oguri-Sensei. In this running form, the arms are at your sides more than behind you (and occasionally can be used to tap your thighs for rhythm). Your run is a sort of 'controlled fall', and significantly you concentrate on using your buttocks to pull your legs back, not propel them forwards. I even find I used to use this style of running when carrying heavy backpacks and webbing in the military. It doesn't move any equipment you are carrying around as much, is better for endurance as you are using a larger muscle, and although slower, is still quicker than walking over long distances.
Anime running: is magical, gets the animators out of drawing complicated biomechanical movements, allows the characters faces to be stable and hands free for action shots.
An infrared space heater can provide the same feeling of warmth as a fireplace, with none of the smoke, and higher energy efficiency. It's my favorite way of warming up on a cold winter night.
My area (Fairbanks, Alaska) has had a major problem with PM2.5 particles in combination with our winter inversion which traps those particles and air low on our town.
I am not sure how you normally burn wood. But when you close the big metal door on the fireplace, it tends to not release any particles. And when it is 10 below, it is kinda nice to not freeze.
Hey Kyle, Anime running isn't the best depiction of how ninja's actually run. It's close but the actual ninja running is more like trying to keep your arms close and moving simultaneously with your momentum rather than forcibly moving your arms. That's how you can conserve the most amount of energy. I think your vids are gr8. I love watching them, I learn alot, but I dont think you did enough research on this topic.
if the drag increases as your speed does; its pulling you back more than you're trying to lean forward, so you should actually be less likely to fall forward. In fact if you go fast enough, you might have to recruit more muscles just to maintain the forward lean because of that heavy drag. The feeling I imagine is like doing a run dragging a 6 tires behind you. In Naruto, they do lean forward more everytime they decide to run faster. I like that anime running gets your abs contracting a little more tightly and gives more range of motion to your legs. If you wanted a dynamic calisthetic approach to build your quads and abs together, this might be effective. I guess the equivalent would be tall stairs. The other thing I noticed is neither of you used your arms for stability. If you look at chearleaders flying through the air they're pulling up through their core into there finger tips and down to their toes and manipulating the force they send into those directions. Its never just the way you want to go, you have to generate some force the other way that you use to balance. You see martial artists do the same thing, when a karate master does a punch the other hand is pulling back with as much force, and there's force moving down his body into the ground to further counterbalance the force of the punch extending outward. If that becomes optimized, all it takes is a slight change of direction and you get a circle, a feedback loop, and you can do what boxers and Wing Chun people do with the crazy fast punches. If you anime run again, try to shoot your arms back. I don't mean isolate them so they can't sway, I mean actively extend back. If you wanted to stop, you would pull back more and that would bring your body upright, slow your legs and finally your arms would return to rest. For your upper body, in the beginning you'd be maybe 50% focused on the forward lean part and 50% on your arms, but as you pick up speed you'll be able to shift that the other way focusing mostly on pushing forward with that lean. That's how you would stay balanced. The circle you want, the one Wing Chun and Boxers use to punch quickly, is in your legs. This position while carrying some risks gives them the freedom to really fly. There's also some practicality for ninja in running that way since they keep there kunai and equipment down by their hands, and they need their hands generally free to weave signs and stuff. If you've ever tried to run holding something or doing something you'll know it's hard to get going. Running the way we do which keeps our arms busy, might just not be practical and further, its pretty easy to start running in that position and the stopping can be pretty abrupt because of the drag, all useful ninja things.
... well I’m gonna have to double check those points about woodsmoke, I really did enjoy hanging out near the fire growing up and none of my family has any of the problems mentioned, of course that could just be random happenstance.
burning wood is CO2-neutral though. but you are very right about the health risks. some very high quality (and expensive) fireplaces can get around this by keeping the smoke and dust out of the room and it would be a CO2-neutral fule if it didn't take so very long to grow.

@@Cruentus No, I mean, if you can smell, because that would mean that more than enough particles escapes, thus proving Kyle's point. Even if you cant smell them, our ability to smell things is horrible compared to other animals, so even if you cant smell them, it is possible that particles are entering the room. That said, small doses would probably not hurt anyone involved in a serious way, since even larger doses will not always cause issues.

About the anime style Running, one point I didn't see touched is: How fast does one need to go, for anime style running to be viable.

Dumpster fire of an autumn. Just the words I needed to describe it.

"...that was when I was on your back. You were carrying me. Like Yoda. And you were Naruto running."

Seriously though, good advice; buuut in my opinion, propane stoves can be worse, especially if the guage measuring the fuel ends up freezing in place (say 40% full,) only for you to run out of propane in reality; and you end up with an excess buildup of gas in the line leading to the heater that doesn't dissipate properly.

I have to say though, I was sure someone was gonna speak up and I can't beleive this wasn't mentionned. the key thought process behind the difference in running style comes from the locomotive mechanism.

Kawakami-dono then went on to explain that it was meant to conserve energy through a few things:
1) Leaning forward helps gravity carry you forward, meaning you spend an overall amount less energy to continue moving
2) Holding your arms back (or as Kawakami-dono put it, to the side) prevents any loss of energy from having to correct your body's swaying
3) Not exactly related to energy conservation, but he said it also helps make you quieter, because your legs are not kicking up and slamming down, and thus make less noise.
Hope this helps clear some stuff up if anyone was confused!
Just get a man pretending to be a woman and that record will be broken easy

@KH this is a footnote for a footnote! You should have made the " Super Nerd " gold in colour for this episode!!!

5:06 THIS "Kyle" in a Skrull in disguise as Thor is still out looking for his cousin, the REAL Kyle...

The thing with anime running is... that is based on chakra :/. Bear with me here :)
It's been a long while since I saw the show but I recall part of the skills ninja had, was to channel chakra/energy to the feet (to walk on water, stick to surfaces, and explosive jumping) so I always assumed that when running or otherwise jumping off tree branches, as they do on each episode; was done applying chakra to feet/legs.
Considering that, running would give you a speed boost on each step, not dissimilar to the impulse felt when a plane takes off... Imagine riding a turbo motor skateboard. You need to learn forward to decrease drag yes, but also to maintain balance against the force pushing you...
So :) if each of your legs was a powerful spring and you'd want that force to move you forward (instead of up) you'd have to lean, to direct the force no?, keeping your arms back..because you'd waste energy countering drag and force.
tl;dr: if your legs made explosive speed boosts, anime running would make sense :)
(Man that was very nerdy drawing..need a Dyson sphere now) cheers
If you watched that real ninja run video, it's very different than one in Naruto. He didn't lean forward that much and he stuck his arms very close to his back. This form truly can save energy in the long run
Fireplaces have grates where you can screen all of the smoke and particles to keep them from going into your house. Also, if you keep your floo properly cleaned, all the smoke and paricles escape outside.
Looking forward to this week's episode of Because Computer Science.

8:15 This also happened with the high jump via the Fosbury Flop in 1968.
Hey Kyle,
Anime running isn't the best depiction of how ninja's actually run.
We have an oven with a front made of heat resistent glas. Polution goes through a chimney and doesn't affect the living area at all.
Because Inventions!
Can you smell when the oven is in use? If you can, it proves the point.
@@fendelphi You mean if i can't :) And no, there is nothing to smell. There is just heat and light and you can watch the fire burn down.
@@fendelphi I understand. I thought you where talking about my point :)
Actually these kind of fireplaces are invented to prevent pollution in the room and to make the fireplace more safe. It's great.
And honestly, regarding my health i'm more concerned about my sleeping scedule than the tiny bit which may escape the oven. ^^' But that's another story. ;)
@@Cruentus I completely agree. So many things in our daily lives have unforseen+unhealthy effects on us. It is prudent to minimize those we are aware of.
I tap mountains 5 and play this 6/6 monster with haste.
Kyle: tap island counter monster
Dammit...
I thought a different video loaded for a sec since he just monologued about fireplaces for 3 mins
After watching this and the Naruto test-run video a few weeks ago, I found myself, just today, running on uneven terrain with an unstable weight on my back, and I naturally fell into the Naruto run, it felt very stable and neither me nor my 2-year-old ended up hurt, although I was out of breath. I don't know if someone else has suggested carrying a weight as a reason for running like that, but hey, I thought it was interesting.
