Nice test setup and, as always, nice work even if just an experimental stand. You mention vibration from the stepper being transferred to the work. This is actually not all bad. In the hole EDM I have built I actually added an ultrasonic transducer (about 100KHz) to create vibration that really helps with the process. This is in fact used in a number of small and micro hole EDM machines and can speed us sinking as well, in some cases even sonic vibration can be used. As for water vs EDM fluid, water is not so bad. It is faster and with the right settings provides adequate finish. It is also much more "friendly" than oils or kerosene.
    Good luck with you project.

The electrode edm attachment will be very useful in the wire edm machine for making the starting holes on hardened dies, actually some wire edm machines have that capability, also there is plenty ram edm machines that uses the x and y axis as well for interpolation, And the most important thing is flushing , that’s why most of the the drilling electrodes are hollow

I just had my Vs3 Japex EDM sinker with a stepper motor quit on the Z axis. It is a funny setup it uses a very small stepper directly coupled to the 2nd output shaft as an encoder. The 100 volt arc power supply still all good just the control for the z axis
I also have a Strathclyde 45 amp with a good arc power supply. With a belt drive DC servo motor and electro break die in the Z axis too.
What do you think would be a solution you may be able to offer

EDM dielectric is basically kerosene with the odour removed. I managed an injection moulding company in the early 90's, the toolroom EDM just had kerosene in it, and I can't ever remember it being filtered? The debris just sank to the bottom of the tank and was scooped out occasionally. I once drained an EDM tank of "proper" EDM fluid, mixed it with some engine oil, and ran a Landover discovery on it :-) Any updates on your purchase?

Did you end up using 3 axis for part/cut location? Very cool stuff, you are making proper use of a home workshop for sure haha... great example .. keep on living the dream.

    Nice implementation.
Fifteen years ago I was very familiar with the latest versions of Fortran and C++ because as a grad student in Mathematics I had a side job writhing code for a Climate scientist who modeled energy transformations. The thing is all I ever had to do was send a data stream to or from either a file, the keyboard, the printer or the monitor. Hence, software/hardware interacting with peripheral machinery is outside my domain of experience.
I'd like to experiment a bit myself with CNC and have a fairly simple question. Are you using specialized librarys or languages developed for this type of software for obtaining both numerical control and the graphical user interface or building it all from scratch with basic library's? Regardless of the answer to my first question, what high level language have you selected as your tool for creating the software?
    Thanks,

You didn't mention in your video. are you using Deionized water?

    • @baxedm9806
      @baxedm9806  4 года назад

Have a look at 14:35 in the video. For this proof of concept, Im using deionised water. EDM sinking fluid would be a lot better. But water was enough to test the custom CNC controller.

@@baxedm9806 You did answer my question in this comment. I did understand you were using water as you said in the video instead of oil. What I was wondering was weather it was just plain water or deionized. Thanks.

I'm watching your progress with great interest. Are there some advantages of Die Sink EDM over wire EDM? What are the advantages?
Did you make that hexagon shaped hole in your test piece with the Die Sink process? Rgrds, gc

    • @baxedm9806

Both die as well as wire have their pros and cons. Both are used for different applications. A sinking machine is less complex to build, but making electrodes is very time consuming. A wire edm machine is complex to build, but no time is needed in electrode manufacturing. Cant really compare both, its like apples and pears.

The desktop app is written in python, with PyQt for the UI. On the microcontroller side I used OpenSTM32, which is based on Eclipse, and wrote the SW in C.

How exactly the gap distance is maintained? Means what input the controller takes to check whether the gap distance will be what we require?
Is maintaining required gap voltage is same as maintaining the required gap distance?
