Tibetan culture and tradition is more about mental culture than the physical culture. To develop our mental culture it is all about our rich tibetan language and polishing our tibetan buddhist philosophical tradition. If we prrserve these two gems then all physical culture like dancing and clothing will be corected automatically.
Requesting those who are so passionate about dancing to also take proper care about our nalanda tradition and tibetan language.

Two videos you have edited with Chinese traditional musics are sung by Tibetan singers inside Tibet. First one is ཚེ་ིརང་ལོ་བརྒྱ་ and the second one is བཏྲེན་འབྲེལ་འཛོམས་གླུ་ from Amdo and they are from different province in Tibet. Songs these days don't use Dranyen and have a more modern beats and the reason why choreography have evolved. We are so used to listen to Nangma Toeshey and associated it with only Tibetan traditional dance and in reality it is not. Just like Indian no longer dance kathakali form in the mainstream, Tibetan dance is also evolving as per the need of the hour. The richness of lyrics, vocabulary and amazing choreography of Gorshey type songs are coming from different part of Tibet is so joyful and inviting. I don't even know that Amdos dance are so beautiful until I saw how they usually dance. I can sense that TIPA Genla you are talking appear worried that Tibetan youngsters are not dancing traditional TIPA style. But they should allow evolving tibetan dance if they benefit tibetan cause. By the way they are not dancing Bollywood or night club dance on Lhakar. Genla may say many of choreography are Chinese influenced but he should come with solution instead of ridiculing or criticizing people who dance on Lhakar. To be honest TIPA should have pioneered and started Lhakar Gorshey right in front of Tsuk Lak Khang in Dharamsala instead of impractical criticism. There are countless beautiful modern tibetan songs inside Tibet and they are beautifully choreographed depending on its music. Most of the songs we dance on Gorshey has hidden reverence to His Holiness. Tibetan artists inside Tibet are highly idolized and revered by the local Tibetans hence the source of inspiration to their lyrics, as we witness, are always geared towards our unity, culture and His Holiness.
I totally agree that Gorshey (kodro) is a gateway to Tibetan pride for many youngster born in diaspora as well as for us to quench our thirst to be closer Tibet.

Thank you for bringing this topic as I have never seen anyone talking about it publicly but it’s important. IMO you are right and wrong.
Almost all of the current Gorshey dancing that’s literally taken the Tibetan world by storm in the last a few years and the popularity is now even increasing to outside Tibetan world, is mostly from Kham and Amdo. Probably more of Kham especially the fast moving types. Eg your clip at 8:00 is a popular traditional Amdo Gorshey.
For sure the styles have been exaggerated to show more stylistic of hand movements that originated from Tibet recently and in particular by a few influential Tibetan Choreographers, who for sure must be professionally trained so for sure there have been influenced from China but you also have to realized that Tibetans in the eastern Kham and northeastern Amdo borders have been living side by side with Chinese for millennia so there is lot of influence in food, dancing, etc.
Second is that Gorshey that we have been brought up and in seen in exile have been mostly central and western such as Toepa. So there has been dramatic shift in the popularity by the Tibetan people from western to eastern Gorshey in the last about 10 years. Now as you can see, it’s been mostly eastern Tibetan Gorshey as I have mentioned. It’s mostly due to the popularity, music chosen by the people. Now in this world it’s the consumers who decide, just as in food, music, dresses. Eg American fast food and music has dominated the world and within American it’s the hip hop now over say country music. Then few years from now it may change due to many reasons etc.
Also yes the influence of the current Gorshey is definitely coming from Tibet and if you watch RUclips and they are many. They are daily Gorshey in Chengdu you will see the songs and styles are same as the ones in Dharamsala, Delhi, New York, Paris,Toronto.
As a keen observer, thanks for raising this topic and I’d hope a serious study and research is done on this as it’s definitely taken the Tibetan world by storm.
Yes it’s possible, they might be PRC behind such as UFD with ulterior motives, who is promoting this considering the production quality and volume from ones in Chengdu and for the fact that RUclips is banned in China and yet they are many channels. So at a minimum authorities are tracking these and if they go outside their acceptance they will shut them down as we have seen recently from popular RUclipsr based in Lhasa, Kardol.

Beautiful insight..totally agree that in exile we are used and accustomed to Central Tibetan type dancing style which is way different from other parts. We need tolerance and acceptance to embrace change as you said its people who decide what to dance. Since Gorshey us danced moslty weekly on Wednesday we cannot dance same songs for 3 hours and for years.

Tibetan spirituality and lamas used to be huge influence to the Chinese courts for hundreds of years in the past and the aristocrats from Yuan, Ming and Manchu empires. Good to know in a much smaller way it's going through the masses through dancing and singing. As well as spirituality.

right! it's a shame our own community is degrading our culture. dance is about evolution and can change over time. there is not only one type of Tibetan dance in the world. the idea that some gorshey dances seem like chinese movements is simply wrong! especially when tibetans in Tibet are trying so hard to preserve our culture. everyone needs to educate themselves and learn the history of amdo and kham dance. btw i enjoy watching dhasa's gorshey videos every week. keep it going!
