This explanation about how to interpret the information available about pigments has been supremely helpful and fascinating. Also supremely helpful: "just look at the color, don't worry about the name" LOL Excellent. 🥰🥰🥰
Pete you are THE BEST man. Love your videos, they always make me laugh. I never miss them so please keep them coming. I absolutely love your approach to art and find it so relatable. Thanks so much for doing what you do....whatever that is!
Thank you for this video and the laughs. I learned a few things, so that you for that. My studio is a converted camper in the back yard. I have a studio squirrel that likes to hang out in the oak tree outside and peak in the windows. It also likes to jump on the roof and make thumping noises while I am live streaming on another platform. I named it Gus after the famous RUclips squirrel (look it up). I have no idea how I would explain to Gus that I was using their relatives to paint with - so I use synthetic squirrel brushes.
Thanks Pete. I didn’t understand a lot of what you said but that’s just me. And the funny thing is that I make books. I just made a book with one-sided pastel paper for my sister and I was dreading trying to explain to her about the different sides. Now I can just refer her to your video. Where she will get confused too.
"Have you ever drank paint water? I have, this is what happens" ....LOL!!! 😂..You're the best Pete! On a serious note I really enjoy your videos so much and even though I have been a professional Artist for most of my life and I'm old enough to be your Father ...I always learn something from you!!! Besides being a wonderful Artist you are a natural Teacher and give your Subscribers much to think about! ... So thank you Pete for all that you do for the art community...If you are able could you please do a video on ways to make non granulating paints appear granulating? A sort of tricks and tips video to show others ways to make your paint seems to be more granulating when they normally are not....Anyway before I write a book here Thank you again for another truly informative video filled with great info and few chuckles thrown in! Many blessings, Rus from Bucks County Pennsylvania ❤️🖌🎨🤓
That's an amazing idea for a video in my opinion. I have granulating medium and don't even know how to properly use it 😆. I've been a professional artist for a long time I do photorealistic animals but as I'm moving into more watercolors for backgrounds I am just lost in how to get certain colors to do what I love them to do.
Throw a vegan friendly brush... o.m.g. chuckled so hard! I'm with you on the marketing hype nonsense. Didn't know the front/back thing was a complaint thing. I must live under a rock. I've noticed texture differences as I go through the cheap watercolor sketchbook that I'm using now, makes the folds of the signatures kind of stand out, but goodness gracious... I still use both sides of the page. People complain about the craziest things. Thank you for an enjoyable rant for my morning commute!
When I say that "I'm a bit wary of AI" I don't mean the program(ming) itself but the way companies and badmen (badpersons 🙂) potentially misuse it. Like with the shock-calls "from my daughter - it was HER voice" etc. AI itself is be a huge help dealing with mindless tasks like in your example with the "answering machine" (which never answered but just recorded - it was "too stupid" to answer 🙂). I can't wait for the next rant 🤩🥰
i get the advertising thing, i see it on all kinds of stuff (food is even worse) and i am also annoyed by it (don't get me started on "diet" products). i only use one side for the most part but it is because my current book is cheap and the paper is very thin 😂 the last rant reminds me of my shopping carts left by lazy people rant. i get so worked up over it. i think this is why i watch my own vids before i put them out, to make sure i don't do or say something really dumb about why i do things. i'm sure i say plenty of dumb stuff but hopefully not as bad as that last one. i bet they had no idea how books are made.
At least that is a legitimate reason for using only one side. I do that on my thinner books too. I also do it for aesthetic reasons too. Sometimes I just want to use the book like that. I always say stupid things in my video but I usually leave it in. It gives people something to yell about. Pay it forward, I always say. 👍🏻
I LOVE your information. It is so very helpful to teach me about pigments, etc. Thank you for the data base. I have a few “fur” brushes from years ago, but mostly I use synthetic also. OMG, I must be using VEGAN brushes🙄. Oh yes, AI is simply this: Somebody had to program it…hahahaha. It annoys me to death too.😤. Yes sir, it’s all the same. WTheck is wrong with people. I love painting and drawing in my sketchbooks, but all of mine are spiral bound. Also my family ask that I paint only on one side so they can take a painting home if they want it. 🤷♀️. Love your info, love your rants, and appreciate how hard you work bringing us informative and fun videos.
I love how you explain things and I always understand too. 👍🏽 one thing I will never understand is color theory. You know the color chart and how a complement color is actually a clashing color and don’t use warm colors with cool colors or is it always use both together.
Huh!And all this time I thought vegan meant ‘made from vegetable matter’! So I think I’ll stick with ‘artificial’ and expect a little inorganic material in it… Well, gram always used to say ‘yer gonna eat a peck a dirt before you die,’ and then I found out that a peck wasn’t what a chicken picked up off the ground (which seemed okay to me…), but was a great deal more! It blew my six year old mind, it did! *snicker*
Hi Pete, people are so easily fooled because they never actually look at the way the book is constructed. Don’t get me started on the vegan thing because I could go on and on. Marketing certainly works because some people will believe anything 😂. Dee
Thank you for another common Sense based video. I work in colored pencil acrylic paint and watercolor and I can tell you that the colors, pigment information, the lightfastness, all of that is basically the same for artist quality pencils as well as watercolors and good quality acrylics like golden heavy bodies and the liquitex. One of my favorite types of brushes is sable brushes, I'm just careful that who I buy it from is not killing the animals to take the hair. It's all about using common sense as well as protecting our animals and environment and all of that. You can do both at the same time. I'm not vegan I don't use vegan products on intentionally but yes I do use certain synthetic brushes because the quality is there for a lot less money I'm just not looking for something that says vegan 😆. Although I am extremely cautious about toxic pigments because I have animals and because I have lung problems and I know that too much exposure to these things can create problems with my lungs. But I'm not crazy about it either it's about using common sense for me.
Couldn't have said it better myself. 👍🏻 I am learning about responsibly harvested fur. Is "harvested" the right word? I don't have a problem with anyone using what they use. Common sense is lacking today and yet people have become more vocal about their opinions. It's funny and sad all at once.
@@IllustrationsByPete I completely agree with you it has gotten so far out of hand. I don't know if it's called harvesting or responsibly sourcing but it's the same thing lol. I love animals they are my favorite subject of art in my entire life and my favorite souls to spend time with. As a matter of fact I have seven canines five are fully trained service animals. And one is an esa for my husband as well as we have a 4 1/2 month old little child boy who is training for physical service work with me they gave me his big sister from the first litter and then the Sire was attacking him so they asked us to take him. The rest of my pups are American eskimos and my husband's emotional support animal is a golden retriever Great Pyrenees mix. We rescue all of our animals if I thought that their hair was good for making brushes my goodness they had enough of it when I brush them that I could make a ton of brushes out of it lol. So I think that there are companies out there that are working that way where they are brushing the animals to gain the hair instead of harming the animals. All of this vegan products and vegan paints annoys the crap out of me to be honest because the best quality seems to be when we're not using vegan sources and if they are responsibly getting the supplies from animals that are being killed for food or whatever that is then I'm okay with using those products I just don't want them to murder in innocent animal just for an art supply. So I think you and I see things very similarly in the fact that we would love to have these natural products but they need to be affordable and they need to be responsibly sourced and harvested.
@@IllustrationsByPete I think because their service animals and not just family members although they are most definitely family members as well. I will definitely say that they are more fun than when I was raising my kids lol.
I was always under the impression that they just gave the animals a haircut. Like a sheep. But it also makes sense that people use all the parts of an animal. But all these viral marketing campaigns like being vegan or using AI always make me laugh. They latch on to trigger words because it works. "Synthetic" is out, "vegan" is in 😆

the sketchbook rant killed me 🤣🤣 so truuuuu
Glad it made you smile. 🙂
I love your rants.

You are just the best! I'd throw the best painting party and feed yall the best Puerto Rican food and we can all paint together!!!

You're so much fun!!!! I totally get the rant about the sketchbook. 😂😂

The thing about the sketch book sound like is a case of (to borrow from Sherlock Holmes) seeing but not observing, haha.

Synthetics are made from petroleum products. There's no way out.
That's just how it is.
