He explained many times why Paul was bad for him and his playing. Paul liked to tell guitarists exactly what HE wanted or would play. Thats not the best approach for George and he just told you. Just listen and you will hear.

Looking at them in Get Back sessions, Paul was the one really putting in. John was virtually a non-starter by then, George seemed petulant and Ringo standing by his drums waiting for someone to play something. Paul was dragging the others along like he was taking them to the dentist. Definitely the last hurrah vibe.

Paul was the one who saved them after Brian Epstein died. The others slacked off and it was Paul who forced them back into doing the hard work of being a band again. The Beatles might have died with Epstein if it weren’t for Paul.
That’s an unfair assessment. George was bringing in some decent songs that the band didn’t want to use. Shortly after those sessions he wrote 2 of the best songs the group ever released.

Loved George but he was a strange dude. Constantly pissed on McCartney but stayed friends with and couldnt say enough good things about the guy that stole his wife!
He was preachy about materialism and talked up his faith, yet he lived like the multi millionaire he was and his faith didnt stop him from indulging in hard drugs.
Eric ended up with is wife, sure. not sure "stole her" but he also helped him with his self actualization as a guitar player and as a person.

Paul was better than George it seems. Paul played a lot of solos and never got credit according to the man who recorded them.
If you’re the lead guitarist in the biggest band in the world it really goes without saying that you’re probably Paul’s favorite lead guitarist and shouldn’t need to be told that. I get the impression none of the Beatles went around patting each other on the back for being musical geniuses. That said, every time I’ve heard Paul talk about George and his ability he has only ever said how amazing he was and how much he rated him.

nah, I think Paul was Paul's favorite lead guitarist. Part of the Beatles "mystique" is the band lineup. Just firing a guy because he wasn't pulling his weight wasn't possible. And in fact George was as good as he needed to be to play the stuff live.

If McCartney contributed to driving George, to create those beautiful masterful solos that maybe he did not get ruined. McCartney was dictatorial but you can argue with the results and you should really point out that his contributions to Harrison songs were astounding
The Beatles got everything they ever wanted - suddenly. Cars, travel, women, adulation, millions. But there had to be an impact on their nervous systems. All the success that they achieved together as a group of brilliant young men somehow got changed into jealousy and resentment and competition with each other. Watching "Get Back" I wished someone had suggested they take a year apart from each other and then came back together.

I’ve always liked George’s guitar playing, he has a very recognisable sound & style that’s quite different from other guitarists. Fab Macca is SO talented it’s actually unfair… I was watching a clip of him & his band playing Matchbox during a sound check with Macca on lead guitar… it’s unbelievable how good he is, he’s basically a multi instrumentalist one man band!

George was a finer lead guitarist than Paul, at least in the Beatles.
@slide4180 Good point. Paul as a lead guitarist often had a certain tone and style, as in Taxman, Good Morning, Good Morning, Maybe I'm Amazed. Very good solos but that sound would have been way too much after a while if used in too many Beatles songs. Harrison's different styles, from the rockabilly inspired early solos to his later 'yearning' kind of sound and style provide a different voice, a counterpoint to what the other two are putting in. That's what collaboration or a group sound is all about.
@@annanikia7949well, I recall Eric telling George how he was impressed by the chords George knew and incorporated into his songs, as well as how the Beatles in general were using "jazz" chords before most other bands in the early 60s. I believe there was probably a lot of mutual respect.
Let's see, Paul recommended George to John because George was a good guitarist. John accepted George even though he was a couple of younger because George was so good. Even when George had to leave Germany, because he was under age to work in a bar, the other Beatles didn't replace him. The other Beatles accepted him back after he quit the band, abruptly.
George must have known they liked his guitar playing.

Paul had an incredible gift of hearing what he wanted in a song. Maybe he didn't know how to relate those tones exactly to George. George maybe on the other hand was offended more so because he wasn't given enough opportunity for composing that many songs.... maybe?

What does that have to do with what George said?
Harrison is the most jilted of any of them. If you read Mccullock's comments about Paul later on, you find that he respected Paul a great deal and appreciated him a great deal, unlike George. too bad

George was the self professed “I don’t practice” guitarist. If he lacked in confidence, he had himself to blame. He admitted that from 1966-1969, sitar was his passion. He barely touched the guitar except for recording. His contemporaries, Hendrix, Page, Clapton, etc were redefining rock guitar during that period.
Now, around 1969, he really took off after learning and perfecting slide. I love the way he played from that point.
He pretty much played by ear, some of their cover songs are on the wrong notes but actually absolutely beautiful at the same time.

Practicing isn't everything. You have to take time away to recharge your sense of creativity and fun with something like that. Paul might've taken those things away from him by making him feel like it was just a job.
Interesting point. But on The Beatles recordings, George certainly played a valuable role as lead guitarist providing a lot of tasty and creative guitar parts. He doesn't explain in this short clip how Paul "ruined" his guitar playing. Was it simply that Paul was constantly criticizing or asking him to play better or what? Paul supposedly got on Ringo many times about his inadequacy as a drummer as well.
What about Heh Bulldog? What about the flamenco, jazz and blues influences and licks George was putting into a 2 min pop song at 16 years old?
What about the fact he launched Gretsch Guitars in Europe?
George DID practice previously and he taught John how to play 6 string. Look at the photographs of that age, rarely is a guitar out of his hands.
If George became deflated as a guitarist at 24, and stopped practising, maybe there was a reason for that.

McCartney is an incredibly talented musician but he was also a ham. Some of his bass lines on their earlier work really had the vibe of wanting people to not forget to pay attention to him.

I near-worship Beatles music and George was a big part of that. That said, and good soul though he was, he could also be a world-class whiner.
George became very resentful. At the same time, Paul was very controlling and overbearing, especially towards George and Ringo. So George had the right to be frustrated, I just think he dwelled on it too much and made it a huge thing. The John-Paul fight was short and intense, then they moved on.
Looks like George doesn't know how to forget and move on. He holds grudges. But it's not something I expected from a "spiritual" person

Ringo said that without Paul’s work ethic and leadership getting them all in the studio all the time, the Beatles probably only would have made three albums.
George for sure had the right to be frustrated. He was fucking George Harrison! He wasn’t some non talented scrub, he was a rock god in his own right. Look at any list with greatest lead guitarists listed, and he’ll be in the top 50 if not top 20. McCartney is a great musician, savant even, but it’s not hard to see him doing the same to Hendrix or Clapton.
Some would say (by which I mean me) that George proved to be the best of the 4 best musicians ever to play together. He was humble, spiritual, wonderfully inventive and looked back honestly at the past. And he could call any musician to play with him and they would all jump st the chance. it's like saying someone who is born into massive wealth should be happy about everything, never complain, not entitled to have any negative feelings of their own. It's often harder for them than it is for someone who came from nothing.
What he says is very plain to see if you watch Let it Be. He has 0 interest in any of the songs George played for him and was micromanaging George's playing on I've got a feeling" so much. It would have been incredibly insulting to any guitarist.

@@11235butthat’s funny, because in Peter Jackson’s Get Back, I distinctly remember George saying he hadn’t picked up his guitar in a very long time because he was too busy learning the sitar, and that he no longer had the proper calluses on his fingers to play guitar. And later on, while they were playing at Apple, he said his ability to play was starting to come back. And the flower pot conversation between John and Paul at twickenham in which they are complaining about George’s guitar playing. All this was during the Beatles time together as a group.
Doesn’t sound to me like George took his obligations to the band seriously. Everyone says the band started to gell during the LIB sessions when Billy preston showed up, and that’s partially true. But a larger factor was George re-learning his own instrument because he spent almost no time playing it after the Beatles stopped touring. It’s hard for a band to function if the lead guitar player no longer knows how to play. This is an overlooked reason why the LIB sessions got off to such a rocky start and later improved over the course of the LIB sessions as George gradually got his chops back.
I find it disgusting to listen to George always complain about Paul. If not for Paul writing the vast majority of their hits, the Beatles wouldn’t have been nearly as successful as they were, and George would not have had nearly the fame or fortune he had. He was ungrateful and jealous of Paul.

McCartney was literally one of the two human beings who enabled George to be a multi-millionaire and be loved the world over from 20 yrs old until his tragic passing. The mere fact George was invited by John and Paul to be in their band should’ve been the only thing George “needed” to know he was a darn great guitarist. Heck, Paul is on record in the mid-60s, with the Beatles at the height of their power, saying that George was a better guitarist than either he or John and that George’s “solos” in many Beatle songs is the highlight of those songs.
I know Paul was an egomaniac at times, but George I think was not looking at the “big picture”. The fact is, had George been writing songs as great as “Here Comes the Sun”, “Something”, and “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” back in the early years of the band, he would’ve had more songs of his included on those earlier Beatles’ albums. But at that time (1963 - 1967), John and Paul had become master songwriters, while George was still “finding his way” as a songwriter.
You're spot on! And that always stuck in George's craw. And then after the Beatles, all his "backed up songs" came out on All Things Must Pass. I have a very hard time listening to that album. He was a MUCH better guitarist under the influence - and perhaps direction at times - of John and Paul. And they were ALL better as a BAND where the total was far greater than the sum of the parts.
Great point and you’ve nailed it. Isn’t it hard to fathom they only made music together for barely 7 years? And the transformation over those years. I’ve been a Beatles fan since I had memory in the early 80s. As you get older you realize 7 years is nothing, it’s such a short amount of time. Yet look at what they accomplished, changed, and the music they made. It’s just always fascinating to me.
Just give George the ability to draw his opinions and conclusions on his own about his relationship with Paul. The facts are the facts. George felt slighted mostly by Paul, but also by John to a much much lesser degree. George was much better off out of the Beatles and it worked out very well for him.

Agree completely. His early songs were bland and sub-standard. It was only due to the grace of John and Paul that they made it onto the records at all. He even confessed years later that he rarely practiced his guitar. From Rubber Soul onward he was more interested in the sitar than the guitar.

True but for some integrity is more important that money. I disbanded my five piece band bc the other members except my drummer wanted to do pop commercial swill and the two of us wanted to do hard-rock prog; so now the two of us are doing our own thing bc for us artistic integrity trumps money.

Poor bastard, his life was a misery. But, wasn't his father an alcaholic, his mother had tio support the family leaving poor little George on his own.
George was a whiny brat. and Paul was a stoic perfectionist. I would personally choose Paul to be my band mate over George because Paul would always be pushing me to be more musically out of the box and thats something I admire. If I had a friend like Paul to take me under their wing I would be so grateful.
It's very interesting reading the autobiog of Geoff Emerick, the Beatles engineer. He acknowledges McCartney's overbearing tendencies, but identified Harrison as a negative surly presence, who frequently couldn't hack it on his solos, frustrating both McCartney and Martin.
This rings true. In Get Back, whenever Paul was rejecting a George idea, Paul was right on the merits.
The real problem was - that as much as I love George's playing - Paul was as good a guitarist as he was and George knew it. Lots of examples like Taxman, And Your Bird Can Sing, their dueling parts on The End - Paul could hang with George on guitar. But... in the end (pun intended!) The Beatles were truly best as a BAND with the four of them balancing each other out for the good of the music. Just compare their great solo music to their brilliant creations as a BAND. Better together.

I think George found himself in a bit of a quandary as a guitarist basically because of the timing of different styles. He was already a formed player in the early to mid-60s before the advent of more blues-infused styles incorporating more bending, vibrato and thinner strings. I think Paul may have been wanting George to compete with the Erics, Jeffs, Jimis, Jimmies and Ritchies of the scene. But when you're already a formed player, in your mid- to late 20s, it takes some time to achieve command of those styles (if you want to). But George continued to develop as a player and hone his craft. He was always melodic and came up with lines that are integral to many Beatles songs. I love his slide playing, especially as it evolved and gained finesse over the years.
And George didn't play like those others because he was just filling his part in the group, with John/Paul in command of what they did. If George was in a different band as a solo guitarist, he might have done some very different things and changed in a different way. Plus he was into the old music, Hoagy Carmichael era
McCartney brought Harrison into the band in the first place. George's insecurity was not anyone else's fault.

I love George but I think sometimes he had a young brother jealousy of Paul and John and I heard him saying in interviews: "John and Paul was just being John and Paul." The fact is that Paul had a kind of work ethics unequalled and he pushed them to be the best they could be, Ringo often said that he and John would be sitting in the garden and the phone would ring and they knew it would be Paul asking them to come to studio and do some work and that, they would not have produced half the work they did if it wasn't for Paul. That's is true because even now Paul is driven who else would go around the world giving concerts in their 80's.
Ringo too. There was a phase that John and George seemed to be bitter about everything and their aim was always Paul. Who else would say:"I'm not a good guitar player because of that person?" practice and you will be better, no one can stop you from achieving it, not even Paul McCartney. And Paul was always so complimentary about George's playing. He said And I love her was that good because of George's intro. I'm glad George grew up and made peace with his brother and I'm certain that the four of them loved each other dearly. I love them and forever I will 🙏

I kind of understand that feeling of thinking you're not good enough - especially if you've got someone like Paul who was so sure of what he wanted, but it disappoints me that George was so vocal about his issues with Paul. They would have lost every penny if Paul hadn't stood up against Klein, and didn't John later say on tv that Paul was right? I suppose the dynamic was always going to be Paul "the big brother". George died in a house belonging to Paul and saw him towards the end. I hope a mutual love won through.
Yes, I agree with this. George seemed so lovely with everyone but Paul (and ocassionally John too). I get that being in a band like that, they would each have issues with each other, but don't air your dirty laundry in public, keep it within the 'family.' Not a good look.

I don't think he wasted it. He certainly put out a massive catalog of great music. Speaking of great music, I'd say he had pretty good reason to resent Lennon and McCartney as they never had any interest in any of his songs, some of which ended up, thankfully, on All Things Must Pass.

"Without Paul he'd be nothing! What a whiner!" "He's lead guitarist of the best band how can he doubt himself?!" He's more than a Beatle ... he's allowed to be upset at how he was treated. It doesn't mean he isn't thankful or hates Paul.
John and Paul didn't let him put more of his songs on albums and when recording his songs they didn't take it seriously until George Martin would make them. Because of their contract when George's songs did get put on the album and become hits, Paul and John made more off of them than he did. Why would anyone want to stick around in that?
He actually explicitly stayed pretty silent on this matter because he didn't want to sound like he hated Paul. He said in another interview how reporters kept trying to get him to badmouth Paul, but he wouldn't give them that story because he obviously loves Paul and didn't want personal feelings to be turned into drama for the press to make money off of.
Believe me, I understand George's frustration. But for all his not wanting to sound like he hated Paul, and trying to avoid talking about him, we sure have a lot of interviews and quotes of George bad mouthing him. Same with John criticising Paul too. It's unfortunate, but George does come across as bitter and whiny when it comes to Paul. I have no doubt in my mind that deep down they all loved each other like brothers, but it's a shame that a couple of them were so public about their quarrels.
I don’t agree with all he’s said but it was just that period of time and I understand why he was bitter about the Beatles, except Ringo. But that’s where the two could relate. And while he would preach about spiritual growth, he has also said himself that during this period he was doing a pretty bad job lol. So yes he should’ve let it go but I’m just glad he eventually did after a while and just moved on with Paul and Ringo.
If George wanted to be a better guitarist, even when he was a Beatle, then why didn't he practice more? Nobody, including Paul was stopping him. Especially as they got more popular and richer, the Beatles spent a lot of time away from each other. I am pretty sure that Paul wasn't threatening George to not play the guitar.

If that is true then pretty much everything should be credited to Paul. He was a huge reason why any of those albums were ever made. Having said all of that George would confess during those days later as a Beatle that he would go months without picking up a guitar. Then during the Let it Be sessions he said that during the month of January 1969, it was the most he ever played guitar since the early days. He even said, "I can feel myself getting better" at playing the guitar.
So, if Paul is responsible for the Let it Be album for even existing, and George wound up playing more guitar then ever, how exactly did Paul ruin him?

For being "the quiet Beatle" George sure had a lot to say about his "friends." I can understand his statements about John because John was not a great guy in so many ways. Before Paul was the bass player, he was a guitarist with the Beatles. Stu Sutcliffe played the bass and he was a poor bass player relative to Paul - and their relationship was fractious because of that.
When Sutcliffe left the band both George and John refused to play bass, so they ought to have both been grateful that Paul stepped up for them. Sure Paul was probably domineering, but without Paul, no one would have ever heard about George.
I’ve heard some bootlegs of the recordings of I Saw Her Standing There. There were quite a few takes before the finished product. George’s solos were not at all inspiring. I can’t see how he could blame Paul for that. Didn’t George admit that apart from band practice, he rarely practiced on his own?
Blaming Paul for being a hum drum guitarist isn’t fair. If George had more fight in him he might have practiced more on his own, or tried the techniques of better guitarists.

They played for hours practically everyday. I'm sure he spent MANY HOURS practicing on his own to be able to play everything he did at the beginning, FLAWLESSLY! And he learned everything by ear and by feel, which is the result of individual PRACTICE.

Paul could never have played solos like the ones on One After 909, Hey Bulldog or Old Brown Shoe, let alone the one on Something. No rock/pop artist has ever asked McCartney to play a guitar solo on an album, while there's plenty of them having asked Harrison over the years (Alvin Lee, Gary Moore, Ron Wood, Belinda Carlisle, Splinter, Badfinger). Even Deep Puple invited him playing Lucille on stage with them in 1984. In 1966, George hadn't been trying all day, he just wasn't allowed to take the right time to compose his solo, like every normal guitarist usually does before recording a song. It seemed clear enough to me. Working with Macca was difficult because George wasn’t allowed as many artistic licenses as he felt he needed to progress as a player. With Eric a lot more liberties were encouraged, so he felt more included and less like just a session musician

As a musician, if you're not happy with your own playing, the answer is to study and practice more, and to perhaps jam with some different players than you usually do to get out of your rut or comfort zone, whatever it is. But ultimately it is on you to just work at it.
Both George and Ringo admitted in interviews they didn't like to practice much. Of course they practiced when they were kids to learn, but Ringo has said he didn't even like to do that, just play with others and get better that way.
Yes Macca is probably a type A àapersonality with all the benefits and sometimes downsides that can bring. But by George saying Paul "ruined" his guitar playing, he's unintentionally knocking himself as a guitarist.
Listen to the round robin trading of solos they did at the end of Abbey Road. The order is Paul first, then George, then John. Paul's opening lick is dynamic and George answers with an equally dynamic lick. John's licks are kind of bluesy or grungy. Paul's have a sharp attack and are rhythmically driving. But George's are ultimately a bit more melodic and subtle. He comes across sounding like a lead guitarist. John sounds like a rhythm guitarist, which of course was his central job when they were a live band. It's interesting that George's parts seem to be answering or in sync with Paul's, while Lennon sounds more off in his own corner.
Of course Paul did some great solos with the Beatles and acoustic guitar work as well. But there's a reason he said in interviews that George was the best guitarist in the band. It made sense that while Paul and John were so occupied being superbly creative writing songs, to have another guy focused on the guitar solos. Most of the time that was George. If anything he found his own voice as a lead player and got better toward the end of the band's run. But some of those early solos like on Can't Buy Me Love are great too.
Paul was a powerful figure in the group and very demanding at his work , more so than the others. Someone like that can break your spirit if he doesn't approve or is always critizing your work. Paul did a guitar solo while George had stepped out of the studio, by the time George came back the guitar solo was done! That's gotta hurt.

George would not practice. He said it himself. Paul was demanding. He demanded excellence. George was a talented guitar player, but he could have been so much better if he had honed and cultivated his skills. George spoke about his own insecurities in regard to his guitar playing. He was always willing to take a backseat to Eric Clapton and Eric’s abilities instead of improving his own. He even allowed Eric Clapton to play lead guitar on “While My Guitar Gently Weeps.” RIP George. With all said and done, George was still very talented.

George stated himself that he did not relish practicing. Paul is known for his perfection and dedication to his craft. Even though Paul is a multi-instrumentalist, he was originally a guitar player. He pushed himself (in regard to his talents), and he was known to push others, Ringo attests to this. Even the dual guitar playing between Paul and George on “And Your Bird Can Sing” can been seen as an exercise in stretching his and George’s talent(s) by playing simultaneously. Paul is similar to that teacher who knows you have the talent and pushes you to do better. I believe he did this with George, and George saw it as pressure (once again his own words).
How far you progress as a guitar player is your own responsibility
Sometimes the only way to progress is to leave. You can't play everything with everyone, especially if you're being micro-managed. Excessive criticism is crippling.
Any artist needs honest feedback in order to progress, not harsh criticism or gushing flattery.

In that particular example it's clear that Paul thought that George's trying to come up with lead guitar elaborations before they had all nailed the basic backing was throwing things off. I can understand George wanting to get a head-start as he was often left to come up with melodic lead guitar parts at the last minute for songs which had far from standard changes etc. I can also see the good sense in Paul's desire to get the simpler things right first before complicating them.
I am sure that this all came about as a culmination of tensions. Often a flare-up (which this barely was) seems silly or misguided because it's over something apparently minor when it's not really about that particular incident and would probably have come to nothing if it was an isolated event.

All of The Beatles were talented and The Beatles wouldn't have been the same without each of their contributions, but time has proven that Paul McCartney was the best all-around musician of the four of them. John and Paul separately were very creative song writers, but together they were the most imaginative, competitively challenging each other. Ringo has said that if it weren't for Paul The Beatles wouldn't have made so many records. The other three were content to lie around, but Paul was a workaholic and would push and motivate the others. And Paul was talented enough to fill in any gaps on any instrument in the studio sessions whenever necessary.

George IMPROVED his playing a great deal during the Beatles recording years of 1962-69. I would say George was the "Most Improved Beatle".
I'm sure Paul was perhaps a difficult teammate at certain times, but George was a WAAAY better Guitarist in the early-mid 70s than he was in the early Beatles years.

Sad to hear that about Paul, especially coming from George.
Georges had great difficulty recording the guitar solos, causing the impatience of the sound engineers who turned to Paul to play them for him. This is what we learned from them with amazement. Most of the Beatles guitar tracks are Paul's even when Georges wrote the song like "Taxman" which opens - Revolver - it's Paul on guitar not Georges. We can understand his resentment towards a friend who frowns at each of your mistakes and who makes you feel like you are playing under his watchful supervision. At the end he told him directly the contribution he wanted from him, he guided him into his playing and played in his place when he had difficulty executing the pieces. Georges was the first to want to stop performing in public and was opposed to playing live even if only on the roof of their offices.

I was sad to find out that the lead guitar in While My Guitar Gently Weeps was played by Eric Clapton, which tends to make the songs title rather disingenuous.
Nah, he did all right career-wise with the Wilbury's. Not my favorite band, but definitely a musical supergroup that somehow managed to survive more than ten minutes.

Watching Get Back gave me the impression that Paul wasn't trying to be overbearing and steamroller over everyone, he just had a relentless love of music and desire to create music. Throughout Get Back Paul is hopping from instrument to instrument messing around and jamming on musical ideas. When others brought things in or wrote stuff, he would add to it, work it into ideas he had, suggested ways to make it better or more Beatley. George would get offended if a song he wrote wasn't accepted as-is without any input from the rest of the band. Paul was a natural collaborator and would readily accept ideas from the others if it made the song better, George, as much as I love his work and admire his skill as a songwriter and a guitar player, didn't seem to enjoy collaboration and perceived any suggestions of changing songs he wrote as criticism instead of collaboration.
George is my favorite Beatle. Yes George, you are an amazing player. RIP.

Confidence is a fragile thing & easily undermined if someone, especially a highly-talented & acclaimed individual with whom you work closely, is constantly ignoring or belittling your abilities.
@@Kite-sx7uh Obviously, I'm not privy to individual examples of Paul's treatment of George, but in this clip alone, George states that Paul "ruined me as a guitarist." Also, in a YT video entitled "TRAGIC DETAILS ABOUT GEORGE HARRISON" (3:30 & 4:32), there are similar comments re. songwriting.

I've heard George blame others for his own failings, perceived or otherwise. It's a very unattractive quality

This was 1974. George hadn’t fully centered himself into his reflective position he was in later in life. This was just 4 years after the full split. Tons of prolonged legal junk kept them all on edge and at odds with each other from time to time.
He never got over the Taxman solo debacle.

@@br1rocks George was having trouble coming up with a good solo and after quite a while, a frustrated George Martin suggested that Paul have a go at playing a solo which as you'd imagine didn't sit well with GH. Paul knocked it off in only a few takes.
George's envy of Paul was unhealthy for part of his life. I think he wasn't able to process that Paul was much more talented than him. What with John was admiration, with Paul was envy and rage.
After becoming rich and famous for being a part of the Beatles , he noticed all the glory for the fame and fortune was directed to John&Paul , Ringo was happy with the fame and money George wasn’t .
Paul McCartney never really did a collab with John after they broke up, that's why George is quite cocky against him, but they did meet again in 1991, which was absolutely great.
In 1966 Harrison basically basically quit guitar and picked up the sitar. So from Revolver until the White Album, McCartney is looking for a guitar player to play as well as the guitar wizards coming up and he is no where to be found. And notice that some of the best solos from 1966 on Beatle albums are played by McCartney. If Harrison was a better player than McCartney he would not have put up with the crap. Harrison ruined Harrison as a guitar player.

As much as we love the Beatles,George was much happier with the traveling Wilburys.
I was there from the time they started pre Beatlemania until the Wilburys and you may be right. There was much mutual respect and camaraderie with the Wilburys .

I'm not as big of a Paul McCartney fan after watching parts of "Let It Be." I understand what he was doing, but my feelings have changed.
John said he showed George on guitar what he wanted on "Norwegian Wood" and George "went off" and came back with it on sitar in 20 minutes. I'd have confidence after doing stuff like that!
George wrote some of the darkest and spiritual of Beatles stuff.
Emotional George was too young to be trapped with two older boys that were having a bromance over writing, playing and singing

George wrote 'Taxman' with some help from John, which featured a guitar solo that he himself just couldn't get right in the studio. Paul had a try and nailed it in one take...
This is partly true - George however wasn’t always afforded the studio time to develop his ideas etc - in 1966 he was still finding his feet as a songwriter and getting studio time - compare this to 1969 by which time he was far more assertive and confident , and held his own - he came up with a stinging guitar solo like Old Brown Show
a handful of guitar solos out of nearly a hundred of them in a band's whole discography don't make of you a great lead guitarist. Seen Paul live several times, he doesn't know how to improvise a solo, while Harrison did it all the time during his concerts. Moreover, Harrison is one of the masters of slide guitar. And McCartney trying to emulate him on Now and Then last year was nothing less than amateurish. Paul could never have played solos like the ones on One After 909, Hey Bulldog or Old Brown Shoe, let alone the one on Something. No rock/pop artist has ever asked McCartney to play a guitar solo on an album, while there's plenty of them having asked Harrison over the years (Alvin Lee, Gary Moore, Ron Wood, Belinda Carlisle, Splinter, Badfinger). Even Deep Puple invited him playing Lucille on stage with them in 1984. In 1966, George hadn't been trying all day, he just wasn't allowed to take the right time to compose his solo, like every normal guitarist usually does. Rockabilly era was over, so you can't improvise a good solo from scratch on a song like Taxman, when you're already in charge of all the other lead parts on the album (i.e. I'm Only Sleeping, Got To Get You get you into my life). The truth is McCartney didn't feel the same pressure because he had the right to do it as leisure every now and then, Not as a job in Harrison's case.

@@janiceastets5425 I like the song. It makes sense bc he uses a wah wah guitar pedal on it. All the songs the quarreling Beatles wrote about each other were good: “How Do You Sleep” (John’s song about Paul), “Too Many People” (Paul’s song about John), “Back Off Boogaloo” (Ringo’s song about Paul), and “Wah Wah.” John also thought Paul’s “Dear Boy” was about him, but it was really about Linda’s ex (“Jo Jo” from Get Back). There were probably others. 2 other songs of Paul’s that I know of were about John, but they weren’t attacks: “Dear Friend” & “Here Today.” And I think Paul’s “Friends to Go” is about Paul’s wish to see George “on the other side.”
George was challenged with being the youngest (only 26 when the Beatles split) and the lesser of three song writing icons. It would be like playing golf with Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods.
There is always a dynamic in any band, leaders and followers. George should have said something at the time. Not years later. He was happy to tow the line when all the money was flooding in. I'm surprised at this. If you are gonna say something as derogatory as that, say it to the man's face.....
For a guy that spent his life professing Eastern Philosophy, there sure is a lot of wants and ego in George's life.

from what i was able to discern by watching the get back documentary, it seems like harrison had a tendency to embellish too much and overdo it (which is a natural instinct for a lead guitarist). the others wanted him to tone it down when it wasnt his time to shine during solos. which is what you should do in a pop band. you gotta let the vocals breathe when they take center stage. i think he was looking at guys like clapton and beck who were dong very "lead guitar centric" music and he wanted to do more of that. but it wasnt the time or the place so he felt caged creatively. however, when mccartney overdid it on bass on harrison tracks he always complained. i almost think paul was doing it on purpose to teach him a lesson.
Knowing how good a lead guitarist Paul is, I understand why George would feel that way. I believe George is right in what he is saying. Also, the way Paul treated George. During the Rubber Soul sessions, if they were recording one of Paul's songs, Paul would sometimes complain that he wasn't playing it right, resulting in Paul kicking George out of his traditional role. "Drive My Car" might be an example, because George played rhythm guitar, Paul was in charge of the bass and the lead guitar, leaving John on the tambourines.
George needs to take responsibility.
