Had just ordered a bunch of musical equipment, that I needed tho, and it came out to around 220$ Got bored and surfed through a Sweetwater mag and decided to listen to the Penguin Parlor and this bad boy…. After listening to the first 10 seconds I loved the sound. And for 189$? Wtf? Too raw. Def gonna get me one of these bad boys to busk with. Eventually will give it to my nephew.

    Fun to play. This is my practice guitar. I've never owned a Parlor size guitar. I bought this one after I broke my Baby Taylor. I actually like the Gretch feel better. I like the thiner neck and the shape it fits my sitting style better. Mine came with the action set reasonably low. I just sanded down my bridge a bot more just to lower the action. It wasn't necessary as it was fine like it was. I just wanted mine perfect. I could never get the action right on my Baby Taylor.

      Thank you for sharing. I was really struggling with small body guitar and no guitar seems to be the right one except Baby Taylor, but it’s too expensive. I was hesitating on Jim Dandy because if it having less frets and no neck strap button, but I guess it doesn’t matter too much in exchange of playability

    Sweet 🖤 I have the black basswood version from about three years ago and, well idk if it's new, but the sapele one is sweet and if it is Black Walnut appointments for the fingerboard and bridge that's a major improvement. The regular walnut is a bit dry and cardboard color. But I have too much guitars now and not enough space. Very nice blues box though on the sapele. Nice Gretch

      The whole point of these guitars is they are copies of 1930/1940's parlour guitars that were made with bog standard wood.
      That's what gives it the vintage sound.
      Put a solid top on it and it will be in no-man's land.

    I have one of these guitars and it's great however the machineheads let it down it goes out of tune regularly. What I did is changed them with a vintage set of Wilkinsons on the bar to give it an authentic look. It would be nice if Gretsch looked at this and provided a better set of machines this guitar is a legend however with a better set of machines it who be ace.

      @@psych336 The machineheads went in and matched up well however two screw holes where not aligned but they are under the bar and you cant see them. I have a notion to maybe change the bridge and nut for bone next.The machineheads have definitely made a difference in keeping the guitar in tune. If you cant get Wilkinsons try a set of mini Grovers there superb.

    The sapele doesnt sound right. You gotta get better quality wood for the warm mahogany thing. Doing it right is the best and doing it wrong is the worst. It also looks kinda funny. Mahogany parlors are usually my thing but i think thats not a good example. I wish i worked for them because i could fix all of their mistakes very easily. The basswood sounds great on the blue one though! Its like a best case scenario for a cheap old sears guitar. Looks great too. Tempted to spend money i dont have on one.

    • @psych336
      @psych336 Год назад

      They are both described as “basswood or sapele”. The only difference is the color/finish. Same exact model just different colors.

    • @za4310
      @za4310 Год назад +1

      @@psych336 this is where knowing what both looks like comes in handy. If you stripped the paint off most jim dandys youd find a wood with lots of dark fingering in the shape of random rings. Thats basswood. Its a cheaper wood and doesnt always look great. Its been used to make cheap guitars forever. Any old sears guitar will probably be made of it too. It usually gets covered in paint because it looks like cheap wood. Now sapele is a mahogany substitute. Its actually not the same family as mahogany but it has similar physical properties. Namely its density, color, and porousness. Mahogany used to be a cheap wood before it became scarse, so cheaper parlor guitars were built of it. The natural finish jim dandy is an ode to those, not to the sears guitars like the other finishes. You can see the wood grain very clearly on it. Its like a cheap, uneven mahogany. Full of tiny little pores. I think they hit the nail on the head with the improved sears guitar jim dandys because they took something already cool and corrected a bunch of issues. For example adding a truss rod. but i think they dropped the ball by trying to immitate something that is frankly outside of the jim dandy budget. Like if you want a martin 0-15 you could buy a baby taylor for like $500 and still be sorta disappointed. Gretsch isnt even getting close. That guitar sounded awful recorded.

      The guitar sounds great!
      It's not trying to sound like a Taylor or Martin.
      For less than $200 it's a steal. I leave my Martin and Taylor alone most days and spend hours of fun on my JD.

    • @za4310
      @za4310 4 месяца назад

      @@NoLefTurnUnStoned. I know, but I think trying to make it fancier is trying to be like those brands rather than what they're good at. I own some and play them when I can. I just don't like the sapele ones I've played nor the recordings I've heard. On the other hand the basswood is so good the price is really arbitrary, we're just sorta lucky they're inexpensive.
