I was at this performance. It was magical. Kleiber and the Bayreuth orchestra were at their best. Wenkoff and Ligendza were a perfect couple. An electric performance.
It is hard to believe that in 1976 it was possible to just go to the theater and be a part of the magnificent event. Carlos is a great conductor, but when he is relaxed during a regular performance, he is even better!
Sviatoslav Richter in his private notebooks wrote about this 1976 Kleiber Tristan: "I fear that as long as I live I shall never hear another Tristan like this one. This was the real thing… There's no doubt he's the greatest conductor of our day."
Richter says he went backstage to see Kleiber: "I told him what I thought and he suddenly leapt into the air with joy, like a child: 'Also, wirklich, gut?' [So it was really good?].

Ligenza is swedish.Both her Mother and father were leading singers at The royal opera in Stockholm, Brita Hertzberg and Einar Beyron.Ligenza was a wonderful Elsa and Walkure in Stockholm. She is underestimated.
