FM radio as an entertainment service is slowly dieing out. That's partly unavoidable, since everyone is slowly moving over to mobile devices for their music needs. (Mostly phones but tablets still have their place) But their death is being greatly accelerated by an increasing number of radio stations that decided that they just don't care any more. I don't know if radio can make a comeback any more, since the internet makes it far easier and more convenient to curate new tastes in music in a similar fashion.
It’s the same as cable: until the older generations that listen to radio or watch regular television die out, they will make enough money to keep existing. It’ll be a few decades before much changes for either medium, they still get a decent amount of revenue I would presume. Plus, the established networks all have TONS of capital and own a lot of sports contracts still, so it’ll be a slow death for old media.
Most of the stations that play the same types of music are owned by iheartradio. They have been buying up a bunch of stations the past few years and broadcasting the same types of music.
