I was inspired to play guitar by somebody that was as good as you 20 years ago but when it came to him showing me anything he would play it as fast as you was playing it. When I would tell him slow down cuz I can't learn that fast he would say learn it on your own kid I had to. Now 20 years later here you are on this video showing everybody your tricks and techniques in a slow motion version I think that's awesome almost as awesome as you are at playing your guitar thank you I'm going on 20 years and still learning thanks to you. Even though I know most of the licks you are playing it's the idea behind your theory of the way you approach each note in the pentatonic minor scales that will open peoples Minds on how to apply their own creative techniques thank you for being awesome
Any instrument is a lifelong learning process. A passion you hold dear and close to your heart. We understand it, many don't and only learn a few basic chords.
I can't stand when good guitar players "teach" you something by just going _"yeah man, you just play it like this [insert blazing fast complicated riff]"_ .... That drives me nuts!
Thanks papastache. I'm 51, been playing drums sense the age of 8. Just now learning guitar. Played in jazz band in high school and then in rock bands in bars. Love your lesson here. Thanks again, Bruce.
Why some thumbs down, Brett is a great guitarist & teacher, give`s us many hours of his time to help us out. Keep it up Brett & ignore them. Be nice to see what they can do !!! Cheers Tony UK.
as im watching this i just realized how my guitar playing is going to change for the better. probably going to watch this a billion times to replicate then make my own as i have done with everything else i've ever learned.
Wanted to say thanks, I took lessons for about 6 months, two different instructors, got confused as very different styles of teaching, been teaching myself from RUclips and have progressed nicely however I have discovered that there are many different versions of notes and songs and many are incorrect, also teaching styles are all over the place. I want to say thank you because you have a very good way of explaining what you are doing. You have helped me lots!
"Learning how to play rhythm sometimes will be the most beneficial thing to your lead playing" - really like your style of teaching and demonstrating what you're talking about. Very cool lessons :)
As a guitar instructor myself I'm constantly scanning for videos like this one here to help my students out. This guy here is one of only a few I have found that actually explains it very well!
You are a great guitar teacher Papastache. I have come eon's in my playing because of You, Marty and Justin Guitar. But I always find myself back in your wheelhouse brother. Thank You so much!
For anyone who doesn't know the guy, it proves he's not a dunce-cap-player. That's why. Also "YOU COULD BE THIS IF YOU..." A) Buy mah shit. B) Pay for mah shit. C) Watch my free videos and everyone else's free videos and practice hours a day
So far I've been playing guitar for about four months and I've been doing random riffs and licks that I just played by ear so THANK YOU FOR THESE VIDEOS I'm going to watch every single one and I'll be so freaking guitar-smart by the time I'm done
Thanks God!!! You really unblock my pentatonic guitar comprehension! What a realief! I Play guitar for 15 years and nobody else was able to teach me this so simple but so effective way of playing. Thanks!
I have watched a lot of RUclips guitar video. this guy resonates with me and I am able to understand him. Seems to be a very practical player that has had to work for his skill.
I'm sure you've learned to brush off the unpleasantries from some of the ppl on here, but there's a bigger talent people like you and Marty have, and that's teaching. There are millions of ppl that play killer tunes, but not everyone has the knack to convey those lessons forward. If there's something better than learning licks and tricks is havin fun while learnin them. You may not be the best guitarist in the world as some like to point out, [though I think you're an exceptional player] but you sure as hell nailed the teaching part. Way to open up my eyes on some of these scales and fingering/transitioning. Keep it up. Lemme know if you've got play-along tracks for sale online I can purchase for download, Stache. Good things! - C
Thought I heard some Brad Paisley style riffs in there. Really liked this lesson. As you kept playing that major note on the g it would set off lots of other cool sounds/licks in my head. Enjoyed! Keep it up.
Awesome. I have seen tons of videos of guys trying to teach this kinda thing to people like me who just "don't see it" or hear it. Thanks man for making simple.
Hey Brett, You're my favorite teacher. This is the stuff I'm looking for. I don't even know what the search term would be to search for "This Stuff", but this is what I want to learn. Please make more of this. You're fantastic, I'd love to take one on one lessons from you.
papastache, a huge thank you for this video. i've recently blown the dust off my axe after too many years not playing because my playing plateaued but this has propelled me onto the next stage! the naughtiness of using the other notes in the minor scale, genius.
Looks like you're picking with your pinky and ringfinger as well. I've got a hard time mastering that. Could you show me/us how to master that technique?
This might be a stupid question but is that a telecaster? my dad gave me $500 for my first electric guitar and i am deciding between a used ibanez or a telecaster, mostly interested in playing the blues
That's always your choice, they are all great guitars just depend on what sound your trying to get, I personally love the American telly or the Stratocaster
Josh Reagan I learned on a classical. For notational purposes. Then switched to an electric. My advice. Get a cheap guitar at first. When your ready to surpass your skills get a guitar that suits your organic base. So blues it it is. You want a guitar that is more attuned to a rhythm lead merger with grind style intonation. If it's note for note shred style you want a lighter feel that can keep up with speed and finesse. But nothing can make you sound good except for practice and you. You can make a cheap guitar sound excellent if you know what you are doing.
Great lesson. I'm also glad to find out I'm not the only guitar player who has a mental block about playing on two notes per string during a solo. I can play a pretty decent solo, one I'm happy with, but I always thought there was something wrong with me because two-note-per-string runs have always been difficult for me to play...whereas 3 (or more) note per string runs come easy for me. I've been playing a long time, but I have still learned a lot from this one single video...I WILL be watching others (and telling my friends).
Hello and many thanks for your tutorials! Would you consider a lesson on how to avoid getting mentally stuck in boxes and breaking a habit of only moving from box to box when improvising?
Subscribed. Should've discovered you ages ago. There are too many time wasters on the internet now. You're one of the few gems who make sense and share solid knowledge. Thank you, keep'em coming!
Out of all the people on line you are the best man. I love your personality. I identify with the way you connect the guitar and teaching. Thank you for the tips and tricks Im gonna check out your site
Oh Papa why you make me feel so bad?Have been stuck in the box for donkey's years trying to get that certain thang and all the time it was right there beneath my (ahem)fingertips. Now i am going to go away and give myself a jolly good lashing.Enough said.
Yes, Papastache, we want to learn more of "that" Hendrix major stuff. That was beautiful! Very good tone there, and tasteful phrases. Please- dedicate a whole, long video to that!
OK, I'll say it. We want more of the major and major/ minor mix videos! You have a mastery of sorts of the flavorful pallet that IS the blues. Its hard, maybe impossible, to get this out of a book or someone's explanation of it. You have to absorb through the sight and sound sync. That you can relate it so well to the masses is your gift. Well done, Bro.
Yes you did slow down to a degree but when I tried to tab it out I would tab what you played and then you would play it again differently and then when you played a complete segment back it was different again!! The joys of my bad memory!! It’s all just the Jam and the Joy!! Your amazing!!
Man, I've only seen more recent videos of you where you seem to play less. Dude, love your playing!! Like how you explained reasoning to do those extra notes in between the pentatonic scales. Sounds really fast and they're all right there for the taking!! Big thanks !!
Papastache102 you are one of the most gifted players and teachers i think. Everything is so instinctive and organic. One thing is you have a killer right hand a lot of hybrid picking is goin on. You should deffo do a video/s on hybrid/chicken style of picking cos your access to notes is just wonderful and am sure we will benefit from that knowledge. Keep it up man!
I have been adding these extra notes to the pentatonic scale for years. I didn't know why but they sounded good. Now I understand why they sounded good
Wow you just made so many things click and come together. This video makes me realize mybe the day will come when I can actually play something that sounds good. Best learning video I have ever watched. You have given me new hope for playing blues. Thank you so much.
watched this while at work this morning and wanted to watch it again when I was able to play along. It took me 2 hours to find it. So glad I finally found it. Gonna have to start writing the titles down. Great video. thanks.
Thanks for this. My playing has suffered hiccups for years on the Major & Minor Pentatonic. You know, play the Minor (sad) then jump back three frets then to the Major (Happy) back up three now to the Minor again and so on. This lesson has cleared my mind in ignoring those three fret fences between the two and just playing it to sound "Fat"... ...
It seems like I understand it better when you and a couple of others show how to combine the major and minor pentatonic. I'm sort of starting to be able to see them combined. Thanks, Stache.
I like the way you mute some of the notes at the bridge, it really gives a better tone, I see so many kids flying up and down the neck without any thought of tone or dynamics (or tuning) Great lesson, thanks
Dude this is the best way to teach imho, theory gets way to boring and is easy to get rail roaded. this is the perfect lesson for me, first vid of yours I've seen and gonna be up all night watching more. Thanks very much and keep the pentas comin :)
Thanks so much for posting fella - I'm a visual / auditory learner and the way you explain and play enables me to really understand the way to mix minor / major pentatonic - thanks once again.
Thanks man. You are one talented dude if I might say...love your teaching style. I am really learning new things from you. I've not picked up a new lick in at least the last 10 years, until tonight...and I'm definitely stoked about learning more. Thanks for taking the time out to share your gift and to help the ones.... like myself...I'm 31 and I first played when I was nine on a $60 c.f. martin stinger and now have a tele so i'm digging the licks for it in this vid...
Thank you! Yes, more please of the jimi style rhythm stuff and soloing that can be generated from it. And just more blues pentatonic in general. Love love love it!
Awesome great breakdown of the tried and true pentatonic scale. I LOVE guitar...after 40 years, there's still stuff to learn. That you did the lesson with a box stock Tele into that cool Divided by 13 amp only made it better.
Rock on Papsstache! I was always an ear player, middle of the road. Guys like you - real compadres - are what kept me playing. Until I got married, kids... 20 years later... getting' back into playing & you are just about the only guy that is bringing me back up to speed- and then some- with your rock 'n' roll mojo. Appreciate the insights SO MUCH. I've been getting tangled up in all of these youtube THEORY videos, that my head wants to EXPLODE. I understand it, but really, I don't need SO MUCH of it. Like spice for cooking, a little goes a long way. I'm not trying to be a music teacher, I just want to ROCK. :^D This video reminded me of playing in the garage with my buds all showing each other new licks so we could all learn. Blessings to you... -Dave
I enjoyed it. It's good for intermediate people who can figure things out beyond basics. I'm still stuck in basics but I know what you mean about not dealing with theory. It is frustrating for small brains like me. So I think your way might be easier just learning some licks and having some progress rather than getting stuck in the math side of things. I'll give it a shot. Thanks!
hey papa,, great lesson bro, i just got back into playing, and i have to say,you and alot of other musicians give alot of time and lessons that would cost more than 500bucks for 6months of lessons. i just wanted to thank you for your time this lesson teachs the begginer,to the journymen!! i watched atleast 10X and i have not stopped learning something new!!!!!
Yes! The amazing lick finishing at 2.41 with that tasty chord. More of that please, sounded great! Another top lesson, really helping my playing, many thanks as always.
Your hybrid picking reminds me of Audley Freed... Cry of Love, Black Crowes, Sheryl Crow... It is killer friend... I love how you add the major in there... I have found that recently buy you incorporate it in a unique way... Rock on....
Damn man.... I’ve been playing guitar since about 1987(metal guitarist). I’ve always loved blues, which is what I concentrate mainly on now, but I just can’t seem to get that true bluesy feel. I know a lot of what you are showing here, but I just can’t get it to sound the way I want it to. You sound freaking amazing and I want this level of magic.
Awesome lesson. I always walk away with something I can use in my playing, yes even after 34 years, that is one of the things I love most about playing guitar.
great lesson, could you go through the hybrid picking you are doing on this video? especially the last 2 licks of the video. The licks are awesome in and of themselves but the hybrid picking brings it all together.
Yea, great! That hybrid stuff really fits into the blues. For some reason a good ol tele brings out the specific sound of hybrid playing better than any other guitar.
I was inspired to play guitar by somebody that was as good as you 20 years ago but when it came to him showing me anything he would play it as fast as you was playing it. haha! Thanks So much for watching! Glad you liked it.
Any instrument is a lifelong learning process. A passion you hold dear and close to your heart. We understand it, many don't and only learn a few basic chords.
You probably learned faster just the same and he was envious of you, and gave you attitude, happened to me, move on move forward- forget him....
@@minkorrh yup
I can't stand when good guitar players "teach" you something by just going _"yeah man, you just play it like this [insert blazing fast complicated riff]"_ .... That drives me nuts!
Thanks papastache. I'm 51, been playing drums sense the age of 8. Just now learning guitar. Played in jazz band in high school and then in rock bands in bars. Love your lesson here. Thanks again, Bruce.
The "target note" lesson was super useful. Would reeeeaaaally like to see more of that!!!! Thumbs up please so our Papa could see this!
Why some thumbs down, Brett is a great guitarist & teacher, give`s us many hours of his time to help us out. Keep it up Brett & ignore them. Be nice to see what they can do !!! Cheers Tony UK.
I do. Thanks for the support!

You are a great guitar teacher Papastache. I have come eon's in my playing because of You, Marty and Justin Guitar. But I always find myself back in your wheelhouse brother. Thank You so much!
You are the Best, what a great Teacher, I will work on this lesson for months.... Thanks
Thanks for checking it out!
Xxxxx
2:17 to 2:43 especially, is a delight to the ear; powerful light here shed on major pentatonics.
This is one of the best guitar lessons i have ever seen. great job.
That last technique with the middle finger picking just opened up a whole world of new sound for me! I'm so thankful!!!!!
Awesome! Thanks for watching!
i gotta say, after 6 years and stomping water, this video gave me something to work on... thx
This is exactly who I want to learn guitar from. This dude is chill and makes it fun.
definitely want more of the rhythm stuff
Coming soon!
+Joe Dunbar fuck yeah
why are guitar tutorials all nice intros? before the actual tutorial?
show off they must

Ascending/descending pen walk mixing maj/min. You just broke my mind or rather broke it free. Thanks,
I have watched a lot of RUclips guitar video. this guy resonates with me and I am able to understand him. Seems to be a very practical player that has had to work for his skill.

Awesome lesson! Learning the CAGED system for me helped to unlock the major pentatonics, knowing what scale shape is under your chord is priceless!
Thought I heard some Brad Paisley style riffs in there. Really liked this lesson. As you kept playing that major note on the g it would set off lots of other cool sounds/licks in my head.
Enjoyed! Keep it up.

Welcome back to music. It's the place to be. Glad I could assist in the journey!
been watching your vids for years :) thank you for being part of my guitar journey! do you have a specific lesson for guitar phrasing? thanks!
Thanks for letting me be part of your journey! Tons of vids just check the main page.
papastache102 Thanks! Rock on!
I’ve been playing for years and the ascending/descending thing is awesome and I’m having a hell of time figuring that one out.
Looks like you're picking with your pinky and ringfinger as well. I've got a hard time mastering that. Could you show me/us how to master that technique?
just never stop to practice and start in very slow motion
I have been waiting for this for about 20 years. Thank you. I'm gonna be geeking out on your stuff.
Haha, awesome!
I'd really like to see the hendrix rythm style!
This might be a stupid question but is that a telecaster? my dad gave me $500 for my first electric guitar and i am deciding between a used ibanez or a telecaster, mostly interested in playing the blues
tele for the blues fella, pure tone but it does limit wot u can play, the ibanez probs has more versatility
Hear hear. Right on.

You bet! Keep reminding me till you see it haha. Got so many ideas I forget sometimes. Great idea! Thanks for watching!
+Sebastian Linnemann Agreed! Sometimes I get stuck like that as well and could use some help breaking out.
Subscribed. Should've discovered you ages ago. There are too many time wasters on the internet now. You're one of the few gems who make sense and share solid knowledge. Thank you, keep'em coming!
Wow thanks! Glad you like the videos! Thanks for checking it out!
That telecaster has character! Love it.
Really good! so many licks in just one video and so well explained! This guy is one of my best in youtube! Thks a lot, i'll keep following you.
hendrix

Fucking love this guy. And not in a gay way.
Haha!
+dadude7 still gay
+dadude7 you gotta say no homo otherwise its gay bro
dadude7 t ft tt
You are right! Pull-offs and hammer-ons are a thing of beauty, but bending IS just wicked.
He has VERY LOW STRING ACTION with NO FRET BUZZ.
OK, I'll say it. We want more of the major and major/ minor mix videos! You have a mastery of sorts of the flavorful pallet that IS the blues. dude this lesson was the tits
I second the tits
+Don Reuter
I love the tits

Yes you did slow down to a degree but when I tried to tab it out I would tab what you played and then you would play it again differently and then when you played a complete segment back it was different again!! The joys of my bad memory!! It’s all just the Jam and the Joy!! Your amazing!!
Lol! Thanks for watching Mitchell!

ahh thanks so much! Glad I could help. Love your youtube name it is so true!
Man, I've only seen more recent videos of you where you seem to play less. Dude, love your playing!! Like how you explained reasoning to do those extra notes in between the pentatonic scales. Sounds really fast and they're all right there for the taking!! Big thanks !!
Thanks for checking it out!
Thanks a lot. I am filming a ton of stuff right now on that very thing. It will be out soon!
Brother Brett, I haven’t seen any new videos, your playing is inspiring and has opened up a lot of new possibilities, Keep Rocking!!!!!
Thanks man! Just check the channel there are lots of newer videos. Thanks for watching!
I have been adding these extra notes to the pentatonic scale for years. I didn't know why but they sounded good. Now I understand why they sounded good
Yes they do! Love those notes!
Definitely more Eureka moments with Papa than anyone else on RUclips just by examining in depth the basics, great job...
Wow you just made so many things click and come together. This video makes me realize mybe the day will come when I can actually play something that sounds good. Best learning video I have ever watched. You have given me new hope for playing blues. Thank you so much.
Probably best pentatonic tutorial. This is first time I heard about combining minor and major scales.
Wow thanks! Glad you liked it. Mixing the two is where it is at!
watched this while at work this morning and wanted to watch it again when I was able to play along. It took me 2 hours to find it. So glad I finally found it. Gonna have to start writing the titles down. Great video. thanks.
You are welcome!
Add it to your favorites and next time and you can access it quickly through your favorites playlist! That's what I'm about to do ✊
YOU DO IT FROM THE HEART AND THATS WHY YOU ARE GOOD THATS THE SECRET
Thanks for this. My playing has suffered hiccups for years on the Major & Minor Pentatonic. Great instruction. I want to do more bends...but have just never got comfortable w/bending.. yet it adds so much. Thanks.
I like the way you mute some of the notes at the bridge, it really gives a better tone, I see so many kids flying up and down the neck without any thought of tone or dynamics (or tuning) Great lesson, thanks
Thank you! Thanks for checking it out!
Dude this is the best way to teach imho, theory gets way to boring and is easy to get rail roaded. this is the perfect lesson for me, first vid of yours I've seen and gonna be up all night watching more. Thanks very much and keep the pentas comin :)
The brilliant thing about this is you can take this and apply it all over the fret board following the same patterns!
Thanks so much for posting fella - I'm a visual / auditory learner and the way you explain and play enables me to really understand the way to mix minor / major pentatonic - thanks once again.
That rhythm though!
Thanks Papastache! You make it look too easy. Sounds great. I like your enthusiasm for playing guitar. It's contagious!
Sweet. Glad it worked for ya! Thanks for watching!
please make another video explaning the major pentatonic riffs you showed at the beginning of the video, thanks!!
You are a cool dude and you know how to play and make teaching fun, look forward to more
Great Stuff Papa
Thanks man. You are one talented dude if I might say...love your teaching style. I am really learning new things from you. You are welcome! Thanks for watching!
Thank you! Yes, more please of the jimi style rhythm stuff and soloing that can be generated from it. And just more blues pentatonic in general. Love love love it!
A 15 minute lesson to teach the most useful thing on guitar. Thanks heaps! This is a powerful way of looking at the fretboard!
Thanks for taking the time to check it out!
Awesome great breakdown of the tried and true pentatonic scale. I LOVE guitar...after 40 years, there's still stuff to learn. That you did the lesson with a box stock Tele into that cool Divided by 13 amp only made it better.
dude you are the man. if you made a million videos, I'd give you a buck for each one. would be totally worth it. It's a win win.
Rock on Papsstache!

I'm not trying to be a music teacher, I just want to ROCK. :^D
This video reminded me of playing in the garage with my buds all showing each other new licks so we could all learn. Blessings to you...

Thanks!
legend! you break down the obvious, put a little twist on it and it opens up a world of possibilities. love it, thank you.
Sweet!
hey papa,,
great lesson bro, i just got back into playing, and i have to say,you and alot of other musicians give alot of time and lessons that would cost more than 500bucks for 6months of lessons.
i just wanted to thank you for your time this lesson teachs the begginer,to the journymen!! i watched atleast 10X and i have not stopped learning something new!!!!!
thanks so much for the free lessons!! I wish we had you tube in the 80's.
More of these pentatonic soloing videos please!
Lovin your lessons...been playin awhile and I'm plateaued....now your opening up the doors for me...great stuff
Awesome! Thanks for checking out the lesson!
Yes! The amazing lick finishing at 2.41 with that tasty chord. More of that please, sounded great! Another top lesson, really helping my playing, many thanks as always.
wow this is awesome, i hope you continue this lesson, specialy the last part of soloing on the a chord, great!
Your hybrid picking reminds me of Audley Freed... Cry of Love, Black Crowes, Sheryl Crow... It is killer friend... I love how you add the major in there... I have found that recently buy you incorporate it in a unique way... Rock on....
Those ideas for ascending from the major 7th or the b5 are so cool!
Immediately got me finding new ideas in a totally familiar location.
Love it.
I have been wanting to get of my comfort zone playing 1 4 5 blues leads. Thx for this. I think it will help me a lot
Thanks for watching!
great stuff helps me out of the rut i tend to fall in. cheers man
Damn man....
Haha thanks Mike! You can do it! Check out my website I have tons of courses that go deep into this.
Awesome lesson. I always walk away with something I can use in my playing, yes even after 34 years, that is one of the things I love most about playing guitar.
fantastic lesson....& the Hendrix stuff would be a great lesson...hope you get round to it very soon.....Thanks Papa....your the best
great lesson, could you go through the hybrid picking you are doing on this video? especially the last 2 licks of the video. The licks are awesome in and of themselves but the hybrid picking brings it all together.
Yea, great! That hybrid stuff really fits into the blues. For some reason a good ol tele brings out the specific sound of hybrid playing better than any other guitar.
Perfect for some tricks and really good playing solo guitar
Love to see how, when and where to apply these riffs.
I have to tell no one taught me so many badass blues riffs as mr Brett Papa!
Wow thanks man!
Some of the best lessons here on youtube.
