    Haha just became a foster parent to a1.5 year old, she was all fussy and i put you on and said let's sit down and watch uncle Tim forge... not a peep out of her for 15 min. Great video brother, thank you for sharing.

    Sundays with Tim is a great habit to pick up. Each time I think about being young and choosing smith work and not choosing a life of welder/fabricator/machinist it really makes me wonder.

    Thank you, thank you, for doing some rusty damascus. I have been gifted some old saw blades, and this is a great application to add beauty to other projects with accent damascus steel.

      Was thinking the same thing. With so many layers you start losing the contrast. It starts to look like the edge of a book with a very fine grain.

      After enough folding, it becomes counter intuitive. Look up damascus steels that are over 100,000 layers. They have some good patterns in them.

    Very cool. So much time spent cleaning steel to stop inclusions and delamination, and here we are with some beautiful wood grain Damascus from rusty steel...

    I've been waiting to see this video and see the pattern on the steel. WOW! Just beautiful. Who would have ever thought you would be able to achieve that look out of a bunch of rusty steel. Really glad you did this experiment Tim. It should have taught a lot of people a lot about damascus that is contrary to everything they thought. Great work as usual. Thanks for bringing us along.

    It's incredible to think that, almost two hundred years ago, smiths could produce something that beautiful. It makes me wonder how many "trade secrets" have been lost to time or simply being "common knowledge" in the trade and so were never written down.

    I'm not a blacksmith or a knife maker but I think the pattern in that piece of steel makes me think it would be fun to learn both. I would also like to make some plane irons, chisels and some marking knives out of it. Great video man.

    That was a great series on forging rusty Damascus steel. The 3,000 challenge was well worth it, it has to be the most beautiful pattern I have ever seen! Stay healthy and keep up the great work!

      Liam truely does. I suspect the cast iron combines w the iron oxides in a molecular fashion that perhaps doesn't occur in a lower carbon higher alloyed steel cant.
      Very fascinating. Both in practice and in theory.
      Neat ole pattern too!

    Simply beautiful almost has a wood grain going, really interesting watching the process. I love what you do and have so much fun learning with you. I’m also a green beetle fan.     Fun Video! Ok...now I got to try it.... Love the way you did the sandwiching in the end, I like good steel in the middle, altho I think I will run some hardness tests to see how the straight rusty damascus will work out....I still have a old "fake" damascus knife and the one thing I like about it, is it will take a edge fast, and makes a wonderful leather working / wood carving knife. Love these video's keep them coming!

    You should try making some damascus thermal break door jambs. I hear theres a high demand for those things.
