TOEFL Reading Practice Test with Answers - Part 1
In this TOEFL Reading practice test from ETS I tell you tips and tricks on how to figure out the correct answers. We solve the ETS practice set 1 and I explain how you can solve the questions so that you get a high TOEFL Reading score. In TOEFL Reading you must read very carefully in order to answer the questions correctly and you must make sure that you finish the Reading task on time.

Question types that appear in this ETS practice test:
1) NOT/EXCEPT Questions
NOT/EXCEPT questions asks you to find the answer that is not mentioned in the TOEFL Reading passage. You must read such questions carefully. Sometimes the answers contain words that are mentioned in the passage - this may be a trap! ETS wants to confuse you and check whether you understand the meaning of the answer. Therefore, make sure that you check each answer carefully and that you understand the meaning. This will increase your TOEFL Reading score considerably.
2) Vocabulary Questions
Vocabulary questions can be easy or difficult. This depends on whether you know the word or not. If you know the word, you do not need to go back to the TOEFL Reading passage. If you are unsure what the word means, go back to the passage and make a second check. Usually, you should be able to figure out the answer when you see the word in context. If you do not know the word you must read the sentence that contains the word. Sometimes you also need to read one or two sentences before and after that sentence. Try to figure out what the word could mean from the context. Even if you are in doubt, choose an answer. You do not get penalty points in TOEFL Reading.
3) Inference questions
Inference questions ask you to infer meaning from the text. This means that the passage suggests something that is not stated literally and you must infer that. Inference questions can be hard. I recommend reading the TOEFL Reading passage carefully so that you do not miss anything. To answer inference questions in TOEFL Reading correctly, you need practice. Take the ETS TOEFL Reading practice tests so that you become familiar with inference questions.
4) Detail questions
In TOEFL Reading detail questions ask you to understand specific aspects mentioned in the passage. Be careful! Sometimes the answers contain the same words given in the text to mislead you. Make sure that you understand the meaning of the answers. Use the ETS practice tests to practice these questions for TOEFL Reading.
5) Function questions
In TOEFL Reading function questions ask you what the function of something is that the writer uses in the text. For instance, the writer may give an example of something and you are asked to figure out whether he does that to describe something or to highlight something.
6) Summary questions
Summary questions ask you to summarize the most important ideas given in the passage. In TOEFL Reading ETS uses these questions to check whether you understand what the passage is about in general. Usually, there are answers that do not appear in the text or that change the meaning of something given in the passage to confuse you.
7) Organization questions
In TOEFL Reading organization questions ask you to insert a sentence where it best fits in the passage. You must understand the context of the passage. If you do that, it will be easy for you to figure out the correct answer.

I wish that you could help us solve a more difficult example because the sentences of this text are small and simple but during the exam they show long, complex and very elaborated sentences that sometimes involve three different ideas, so you barely have time to analize and decide what the sentence really talks about.

But. The method is that. I first have to read the answers and than go to the passage Or quite the contrary, start with the passage and than go to the answers and select the perfect one.
I'm so glad it's helpful to you :). The best strategy is to read the question and then go to each answer choice and check whether it's correct or wrong by having a look at the passage. Hope this helps!

I'm so glad it is helpful to you :). In the TOEFL test you can't take notes and highlight text, but you can do it with the ETS practice tests. I used the pen function in Microsoft Edge. Hope this helps :)

well, first of all let me congratulate you for the awsome job you´ve done with this video. but on another hand i don´t know if you did it on purpose or it was a mistake of yours, that you have blended toefl reading type questions with listening questions. for example: reading questions don´t have function, organisation and detail questions, but it has factual and retorical purpose questions instead...i hope hear from you, nevertheless as i said before you did a pretty job with this teaching lesson. congrats once again!!!
Hi Eder, thanks a lot, I'm so glad you like the video. Some question types in TOEFL Reading and Listening are actually the same but are sometimes called differently. You can as well call them function questions, detail questions and so on. In the end, it's important that you give them the name that you think is best because this will help you remember the question type in the TOEFL test. Hope this helps :)

I wanna say that I think the answer for the 6th question is D not C.
You see, the development of irrigation was the result of the thriving obsidian operation, not a factor that developed side by side with it, it actually came afterwards. And D makes more sense because they say that the thriving of this industry led to some violation to the rights of the immigrants because they were brought to Teotihuacan by force to work. So it had some bad effects, and here lies the conflict that answer D mentioned.
Hi Saba, you're so welcome! I assume you refer to question 8, not 6, right? The author talks about people being coerced to work in the city, that's correct. But have a look at the question: the question asks you why the author discusses the thriving obsidian operation. If you read the paragraph you see that the author put emphasis on the power and wealth of the city. There may certainly have been conflict due to people being coerced to work, but this is an interpretation, it's neither stated nor suggested in the text. Does this help?
