  • "Portrait of Wally", Egon Schiele’s tender picture of his mistress, Walburga (“Wally”) Neuzil, is the pride of the Leopold Museum in Vienna. But for 13 years the painting was locked up in New York, caught in a legal battle between the Austrian museum and the Jewish family from whom the Nazis seized the painting in 1939.
PORTRAIT OF WALLY traces the history of this iconic image- from Schiele’s' gesture of affection toward his young lover, to the theft of the painting from Lea Bondi, a Jewish art dealer fleeing Vienna for her life, to the post-war confusion and subterfuge that evoke THE THIRD MAN, to the surprise resurfacing of “Wally” on loan to the Museum of Modern Art in Manhattan in 1997.
The “Wally” case brought the story of Nazi art loot into the open, eventually forcing museums in Europe and the U.S. to search their own collections for suspect objects. Many museums ended up returning art to Jewish families who had abandoned hope until “Wally” showed that institutions could be held accountable for holding property stolen during the Holocaust.

This case reminds me so much of The Woman in Gold (2015), same concept, painting by Klimt got stolen by the Nazis, falls into the hand of the Belvedere and rightful owners trying to get it back. Painting gets returned after many years of legal law suits and lives happily ever after in the US.

These heirs, they didn't want the portrait of Wally back, they just wanted to grab for money. This greed is significant. This kind of people has no interest in art except as an investment. What a shame.

most of the time, the heirs can't afford to keep the painting. One, there could be multiple heirs claiming the artwork and they agreed upon it. Two, the insurance on having something like that "known" in residence would be through the roof. Unfortunately, in a lot of cases, putting the artwork up for auction is the best option 🙃

Too much music underlay is distracting. NPR should not receive one dime of public funding. That painting needed a black matte and black frame.

It's kinda funny that Jews are blamed for crucifying Yeshua. Because you could say, yes, but, you need to ask why Jesus was crucified. Not who crucified Jesus.

@@rutbrea8796 it is mentioned in this vid. Rewatch it it is relevant to anti Semitic preWW2 art thefts, the reason behind the hate , the Nazis stole hundreds of thousands of paintings owned by Jewish people and many are being held in America and other places and they still are not returned to the rightful owners descendants. Politics and religion are the two main causes of wars.

@@rutbrea8796 it is a lot more complicated than this . Leopold conned Bondi into thinking he was helping her get a painting back that the Nazis stole from her but was then returned to Vienna but given to a museum and he was ruthless in his collecting

Joseph Ter Meer, I truly believe he was crucified because he was a Jew and the Romans opposed anyone who was against their dogma, Yeshua, as you call him, was starting a new religion of his own and the Romans were idols worshippers whose faith was centered in Zeus, Hercules (his son with a mortal woman) and other gods. The Jews were against Rome in every step of the way. That's also the reason why they destroyed the Temple of the Most High God. Of course, the jewish people were blamed for his death and everything else. The Romans, like any other empire wanted to rule the world and set their dogma as a combination of beliefs. Haven't you ever thought about it?

Well you need to ask why someone would blame Jews for crucifying someone who didn't exist in the first place.
